I am curious to know, has anyone here ever receive a free upgrade? Is it common for guests to get one due to a special occasion like a honeymoon or anniversary? I'm assuming that's what people mean by using the term pixie dust.

:thumbsup2 Pixie dust means any sort of magical occurance planning, executing, enjoying a trip to Disney. Many people also use pixie dust in their everyday life to promote happiness and well being. Sure, pixie dust is responsible for free upgrades because they are very rare, but happen. It could mean getting a special meal reservation, your daughter getting a part in a special play at school, anything really. There is only so much of it and no one knows how or why it works. You have to be specific when requesting others to bestow pixie dust or using your own stash. There is more to have here on the DIS since everyone here has some and can combine it with others to help out at any time. :wizard:

Upgrades are very rare indeed. :cloud9:

I agree with the PP - pixie dust for me means anything magical that happens when planning or enjoying a Disney vacation. It doesn't necessarily have to be an upgrade.

I've gone to Disney almost 30 times including last year for my wedding which we had at WDW. The only time I've ever received an upgrade is when my husband (then boyfriend) surprised me with a trip for my birthday. We were staying at the Grand Floridian and there was a note on our reservation that he planned to propose. We were upgraded to a concierge room in the main building. It was magical and made the proposal that much more special!

I think since everyone seems to be celebrating something it is less likely for an upgrade to occur simply because of a special occasion.

We went to WDW for our honeymoon in August 2007. I booked a package at AKL with no dining. It was a few days before our departure and we still hadn't received our ME luggage tags. DH called and the CM he spoke with said our ressie wasn't in the system :sad2: Funny, because the $3,000 charge had already been paid for and not refunded. After a lengthy chat with a manger, we were upgraded to the Contemporary Club Level and when we arrived, we found out they had given us free dining! So, that was some great pixie dust!

We were upgraded at the WL to Club Level on our honeymoon in July 2003 & then again to WL CL in Oct 2010. :wizard: We were lucky to get 2 upgrades at our favorite resort. :)

Our last trip was December, 2009 which included five adults and two children (one adult in a motorized scooter) in two rooms. The pixie dust guru's must have been watching over us because Disney threw in an extra room for free for the entire stay. I can still remember my shock when the CM at AS Movies kept saying, "yes ma'am there are three rooms on your reservations" and then winked! :wizard:

I posted this once already, but this was our "Pixie Dust" story.:wizard:
We were just at WDW for New Year. We checked in on Dec 30th to the Poly for 2 nights. I had a discount for those 2 nights, and then we were checking out and going to POR for the rest of the week with free dining.
I went to the desk on the 1st to see how much it would be to just stay at the Poly. Needless to say, we were spoiled after just 2 nights there!
When the very friendly CM told me the difference was around $1800, I told her we just couldn't afford that much more, so we would just check out as planned. I went back to my room, we packed up and loaded the van to move to POR. My husband dropped me off at the front door to check out because they never put the Express Check out papers under our room door. When I walked in, there was a man standing in the front door that said "May I help you?" I did not know this was the manager. I told him that I just needed to check out. He said "Why are you checking out?" I explained that we were just moving over to POR for the rest of the week. He said, "Don't you want to just stay here?", and I kindly told him that I would love to, but couldn't afford it. He said, "Oh, well I can fix that! We will just transfer your reservation over here and you can just stay for the price you have already paid. Is that okay with you?" Well, at that point I burst into tears. He said "What's wrong?" I was shaking all over as I explained that it was my daughter's 10th birthday, and that I had always wanted to stay there, but it was never in the budget. I have never ever had an upgrade, or won anything in my life! He said, "Well, this is your New Year's present!"
We ended up staying for 6 more nights for the price of POR!!! A total of 8 nights at the wonderful Polynesian resort. It was truly a magical vacation for us!

What an awesome story My2angels!

We had some pixie dust on our trip last month. We weren't able to get a room at POFQ and the perfered rooms at CBR weren't available when I booked. So we were booked for a standard room at CBR and I was apprehensive about how far we might be away from the food court and playground. We ended up going one night early and staying at POP and doing an early ticket pickup and upgrade. Apparantly when we did that the girl at Guest Services at MK accidentally ERASED our reservations. When we got to CBR that morning to check in they saw us as cancelled in the computer. It took about a half hour to fix and to make it up to us they upgraded us to a perferred room and outfited our kids with Princess and Pirate gear. The room ended up being in the perfect location- even better than the last time we paid for the perferred location:)

We went to Disney this past Jan 2nd. We had ressies for a standard room, but had requested as close as possible to the bus stop, whichever island section had a very close to bus stop room, but couldn't afford preferred. So, when we checked in, it wasn't very close to the bus stop, not the farthest, but not really close. So while looking at the maps they were showing me, I asked if there was any possibilty of moving to one of the islands with a closer room, at any of the places that weren't preferred. So, the cm said she'd check and be back in a few min. About 10, 15 later she came back and she gave us a free upgrade to the preferred island of Trinidad and the room absolutely closest to the bus stop that we could have had!! I was so surprised and thankful! Our cm was really awesome! And it was so fun to get that wonderful pixie dust! It was very helpful and maybe silly, but it makes you feel even more special when you get an extra bit of much appreciated pixie dust!! :) :goodvibes
