Is it possible to copy and paste photos from my laptop to a compact flash card?

Not sure what computer system you have and what photo library software you have, but the usual method of doing this is to copy the file from the computer to the card.

If you are using a card reader it's as simple as dragging and dropping.

If you have the camera connected to the computer and are reading the card through it, I seem to remember that the drivers for my Canon 60D wouldn't let me copy files from the computer back onto the camera.

If the card is connected to the computer via a card reader, though, you can use it just like any other drive.
