Photo Sharing: Ultra Wide Angle

I'm with Tom on punching up your photos with post processing software. It is a personal preference though.... My husband really relates to black and white images like the ones Ansel Adams is famous for... To me that's like eating a diet candy bar.... what's the point if it doesn't have the thing that you crave.

One of the things that I've noticed about shooting digital is that the color doesn't always come through in the original exposure but it can be brought out with software. In film ya got what ya got and I think for the most part, the color was more likely to be there than missing, like it sometimes is for digital exposures.

With the last 2 digital Nikons (D50, D60) I've worked with, I've noticed that if you take multiple exposures very quickly it will give you something of a small exposure range without intentionally setting the bracketing mode.

The other thing I've noticed is that when you shoot in Raw plus JPEG, the algorithm that Nikon uses to reduce the raw file to a JPEG does a pretty good job of picking pixels that bring back the color to a pleasing level.

Now I have no idea if that is the technical explanation for what is going on between the Raw and the JPEG but I like what I get when it "dumbs" down to a JPEG.

Here is a picture that I Photoshopped:

......and here is the original JPEG straight outta the camera:

I definitely prefer the punched up color....(Although the top one is perhaps a bit too punchy, it's still a work in progress) I think it draws your eye in and I also think that most of what you are seeing today in print has been altered in software to increase the color impact.

I suppose that's why they say it's all in the eye :magnify: of the beholder!

Very nice color in that one, Scott. I don't want to pan your photos, I think they're great! I just felt that on some of the evening ones, the color was pushed to the limit of believability.

Again, I'm not against enhancing the color. I agree with Marlton Mom that the photoshopped version is more pleasing. Heck, I try to go through and enhance the color on most of the shots that I feel are worthy of posting/printing.

I'll continue to enjoy looking at all the photos posted here, regardless of the level of "punching".

Thanks,

Boris

I really like the exaggerated color I've seen on so many posted here lately. It wouldn't work for me anywhere else, but at Disney, home of animated fantasy, it just works.....

What software are you using? CS3? And how did you learn to edit photos like that? Trial and error, youtube videos, books? Any recommendations?

I do 95% of my editing in Adobe Camera Raw. I'll make other changes in Photoshop (CS3) like sharpening and maybe tonal contrast, but the bulk of editing, unless I need to get into layers, is in ACR.

I don't know everyone's name here, but I think you might think my name is Scott?

If so, I know I push the limits on believable colors a lot (especially with the dusk shots). That's my personal preference I guess. The only thing I try to avoid is going so far that you get weird artifacts or a really over the top look. I try to avoid most of this by adjusting the levels of each particular color, and increasing the vibrancy, rather than the saturation.

Ooops, my bad!

Chalk it up to my aging neurons.

For some reason, when I read your recent trip report (from a month or two ago), I had that name in my mind.

My apologies Tom.

Jeff, those shots are AMAZING!! That makes me look forward to moving to Florida SO much, so I can try to take beach/wave shots!

Jeff, you make it really hard to post ice pictures after looking at a lazy afternoon walk on a sunny boardwalk! Gorgeous shots!!!

Taken this afternoon after we spent an hour digging our car out from the icestorm that hit last night...

Wow what a great pic!

Jeff, all I can say is OMG. Your pictures are incredible, they seem to take me to a different place everytime I see them. You have a gift that is for sure! I hope someday that my pics will do the same to others.

Jeff,

I really like the phone photo! It catches my eye and then I look in the distance to see what is there but the sharper image of the phone pulles me back to that part of the photo again. Some other good photographers like to hang around abandoned industries (Michael Reichman, George Barr), there is a lot to see and plenty of stories to tell.

Thanks Bob- I do enjoy exploring abandoned places. I'll have to look those guys up.

I'm just going to go ahead and say this, and take the chance of getting flamed. Jeff, you make me sick. I really don't like you. :thumbsup2 You're pictures make me so frustrated because I don't think that I will ever be able to pull off something as good as your shots! Every time that I look at them, the sharpness and clarity make me feel that you can almost reach out and touch the subject. Between your eye and your technique (and I'm sure equipment has a LITTLE to do with it but I'm not going to open up that debate again) your shots are simply amazing. I wish I could just study with you for a week sometime to see how you create such amazing shots! :worship: (And I apologize if that comes across as a little creepy.... certainly not my intention.) :lmao:
