Photo contests rule clarification question

Framing is just part of my macro in photoshop when post processing pictures. The macro doesn't do anything to the picture itself, just frames and resizes the shots. It doesn't alter anything but the size of the picture and the resolution so that I can post on the internet. I believe a black border doesn't detract from a picture, nor does it add anything, but rather allows the viewer to better focus their attention to it.

I'm fine with not adding a border, but at the same time, I'd argue that it doesn't fall into the "no photoshopping" catagory, as you're not altering the photo itself. If you put a picture in a picture frame, you're not altering the photo, you're just presenting it in a better fashion.

:confused3

while i agree with this it makes me think of a humorous ( to my warped mind) story..an acquaintance i know teaches "art" classes( ok if you call sad clown faces and dogs playing poker "art" but i digress) and carries in her car a stock of frames she puts on her students' finished "paintings" then sells to them ( cha-ching$$$) because in her words " a frame can make the worst painting look good" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: not saying this applies here, just cracks me up

i kind of wondered about the b&w and sepia and I think i saw a selected color one once that i wondered about as well . I guess those could be done in camera with some cameras but guess it's a fine line and andromedaslove is nice enough to put the contest together without playing police Sargent as well.

I believe selective coloring doesn't change the picture, but it allows the viewer to better focus on the main subject:confused3 :confused3

But you can't crop, resize or add a watermark without using software either. And frames can be created without expensive software.

I might agree with you if it were not for the fact that in practice the permissible edits have not been so limited. For instance, b&w and sepia conversions have been allowed. And, as has been argued before, that language would appear to exclude any image shot in RAW. Andromedaslove has also said that her intent was really to exclude images that have had distractions cloned out and similar significant edits. IOW, it seems that the list was meant to be illustrative, not exclusive.

I have no wish to make things more difficult for Andromedaslove, and I'd be happy to submit my picture without the frame if it's a problem, but my understanding of the rules as they've evolved wouldn't have precluded the use of frames or borders.

so the bottom line is, you believe that if one person breaaks the rules or stretches them, then it only makes sense that others should, which eventually will harm the contest//// rather than sticking to the rules and better explaining them to those who break them... ????

Wow--that's quite a stretch, don't you think? As I recall, Andromedaslove has specifically stated that b&w and sepia conversions are acceptable. She has also said that RAW conversions are ok despite having had white balance adjustments, sharpening, etc. I'm not saying that it's ok to bend the rules. I'm saying that the rules are not as cut and dried as you've made them out to be.

Besides, the rule says that "[p]ictures can not be altered." How does adding a border alter the picture?

that's like saying a car isn't altered if you put a spoiler on it...

it's not a stretch at all, you are justifying edits that you believe in , by saying someone else did this, or that...

No, I'm not "justifying" anything by saying that "someone else did this." I'm saying that the person who makes the rules said such edits were not in violation of the rules.

IMO, a border does not have to be "justified" because it does not violate the rules as it does not alter the picture. If Andromedaslove disagrees, then I'll of course defer to her because it's her contest.

Ok, at first this conversation veered hilariously off topic, and from there it just went seriously down hill. I just saw this post so I figured I would step in now and clarify my stance on the borders and framing.

I do not want borders and/or framing on the submitted photos. A few weeks ago (when I had the time and was running the contest on time) I took the time to PM the people who had submitted entries with frames and let them know that they needed to be changed. I made a point on the next weeks contest to state that I did not want frames on the photos. This week however I have been very busy and I was running late getting the photo contest together and did not feel that it would be fair to the person that entered the photo to tell them at the very last minute that I wouldn't include their photo. So I accepted it.

I feel that the borders and frames do change the photo. I know, we could go round and round about all of the changes that people have made to their photos. I hope this helps clarify the rules for everyone.

I guess I either didn't enter or didn't use a border that week, and I didn't see the clarification. I shall discontinue the use of borders. Sorry to be a troublemaker. :rolleyes1

I think I'm too late as mine is already in a poll, unless Andromedaslove wants to edit it to include the new link.

Andromedaslove, thanks for the clarification, and, as always, thanks for running the contests! :)
