Photo-centric WDW trip -- questions!

Thanks! I'm working on more and I might get to post something today. Not sure ... I also have to create a logo for my supervisor, from scratch, by Friday afternoon. So I'll work on the latter, and then jump to my photos when I need a break for a few minutes ... that seems to work best for my ADHD!

One new and one revised today.

First, the revised:

Boardwalk at Sunrise June 2011 HDR v2 Flickr by Scott S. Baxter, on Flickr

Essentially, I built a mask based on the blue channel of the image I posted a few days ago, and used a Curves adjustment layer to make the sky a little more dramatic. I like it better this way.

Now the new:

Cinderella Castle with Swan Boat Landing Night HDR June 2011 Flickr by Scott S. Baxter, on Flickr

I tried to process this one two or three times and was getting crap. It kept coming out looking like it was shot underwater, and I also had troubles getting the various exposures aligned properly -- it would look perfect on the castle, but you see a definite misalignment on the lights of the Swan Boat landing. Last night I carefully chose the exposures to use and managed to find a suitable set that were actually aligned. Then I tonemapped them, after which the real fun began. I judiciously applied some corrections in ACR, then some carefully-targeted Curves adjustments in Photoshop to finally open it up to what I imagined it should be. Finally, I'm pleased with it.

Incidentally, this is about as far toward the east side that I like to go when photographing the castle. There's something about the view from that side that I just don't like -- it just looks wrong somehow. I think it is because it is so similar to the view from the west side, yet the smaller turrets and such are different, and I just don't like it as much. I only like it if the angle is unusual (like very close in and looking up) or the castle is just part of the scene, as in the view I've posted here.

More to come? Oh yes! :thumbsup2

Really solid photos Scott. I look forward to seeing some more! the descriptions of your process have been quite interesting to read. Thanks for all your work! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Bumping this up because no one commented on the last two photos -- and yes, there is still more coming.

Thanks Scott, I can't wait to see more....

Wow--your pictures are amazing. I'm headed down in December (easier to get up for sunrise (; + Christmas decorations)--this will be my first time bringing a tripod into the parks. I particularly liked seeing the sequence where you showed your processing steps--I'm still learning a lot about photoshop, and I find it helpful to see what can be done.

Absolutely -- the only drawback is that "Magic Hour" doesn't last quite as long in the winter. But I'm not sure how much practical difference it makes. On the other hand, fall and winter are great because humidity is low -- less haze in the atmosphere.

Work keeps getting in the way of processing more images. I can't process my stuff because I'm spending all my time processing work-related stuff and other people's images. Just today, I spent most of my time wrestling with and building what became a (take a deep breath) ginormous 10.4 GB indexed color file! :scared1: Yes, I meant gigabyte. That's about four times as large as anything else I've ever attempted to wrangle. So far, saving and other operations take quite a while but my Mac Pro hasn't thrown in the towel. But now we've determined that the file must be downsampled in order to print -- but because it is full of tiny details, it needs to go to full RGB first, which is going to increase the file size dramatically. It might choke this time. I'm going to leave it it to think and hope it gets finished by Monday morning! Even if it does work, it will likely then take two hours or more to down-sample ...

I promise that more images are coming ...

Just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience. Getting ready for a short trip to WDW, and was searching for tips on shooting Illuminations when I found your thread. Also took some time to visit your Flickr stream - I really like your processing, and appreciate the details you provide with many of your photos.

Wow! Didn't expect to see this thread again!

But thanks! And yeah, I like telling the stories of how the images were created and processed. I figure that's primarily of interest to other photographers -- and probably a minority of those -- but I still like including those things where I can. Images can and do speak for themselves often enough, but I can't count the number of times I've looked at someone else's shots on Flickr or elsewhere and wished they had included some sort of context about the shooting situation or the processing or both. But maybe that's just because I love to read!

I still have a lot of images to finish processing and upload at some point, both from my solo trip and many others. Work has just gotten in the way again the last month or so, but I'm itching to get back to it.

I'm hoping to take another solo trip sometime this summer -- we'll see how it goes!

Just read this thread and wanted to let you know how informative it is even though I don't plan to post-process anywhere near as much as you do Scott!

I'm planning a photography only 4+ day in early June (staying onsite) and one of my pre-trip tasks is to list my shots that I want to take. Thankfully I am an early riser and plan to be at park opening every morning of my trip so those sunrise shots should be easier!

Your photos are beautiful and an inspiration and I hope you do get back to snap some more shots this summer!
