Photo Assignment: Sept '06 - Sports/Action

Sailing is definitely a sport, so here are a couple I took off Newport, RI on 8/25/06. These are actual 12m sailboats that were sailed in the America's Cup races in the past. They were taken from our sailboat and let me tell you, we weren't approaching the speed these boats were going.

I'm a beginner so I'd be interested if anyone has opinions.

Nice pic's of RI, I was checking out all the nice pictures and had to do a double take when I came to yours, I sad to my self I've seen that house before. I'm from NK so not far from ya. :thumbsup2 Kelly

Inserting a bad quality pic (took cheap p&s instead of digi Rebel) of the Cubs victory over the Reds on Sunday. I do have a question for my Rebel. I am dreaming of Cannon 70-200 f2.8 and wonder if IS model is better for sports. I shoot a fair amount of action sports for the kids (swimming, baseball, football) and was wondering what would be better. Thanks for everyones photos and help on this board.

With shots like this I see a new lens is in my future.... I need a bigger zoom with a more open apeture to be sure...

USAG Gymnastics Meet - Feb 2006 She was Level 4

Kelly! What a great picture of that backward roll! As soon as I saw the photo, I thought she was the same level as Colleen!! Colleen is now a second year Level 4 -her coach felt she needed a bit more confidence on her strength moves - which have come a LONG way over the summer!! Here are a couple from last season ( I didn't notice until I posted them, but they both are the same pose! One on floor and the other on beam!! :goodvibes I'll have to look for some action shots - that are not blurred! ;)

I don't use that lens (though I am lusting after the Nikon version), but here is my take on it. The lens is a monster. I don't know that hand holding it for a full game is something one really wants to do. Most likely you'll be using a tripod or monopod to help hold it. If that is the case the you wouldn't be needing the IS.

My plan is to buy Nikon's upcoming 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ED IF VR AF-S, then get the 80-200mm f/2.8 ED IF AF-S. These two lenses together are less than Nikon's 70-200 f/2.8 with VR. Canon also has a 70-300mm with IS and a 70-200 f/2.8 without IS. These 2 are about the same price as the 70-200 f/2.8 with IS. Just something to think about.

I do know that both companies 70-200 f/2.8 with IS/VR lenses are right near the top of the list when it comes to outstanding overall quality.

Wow your daughter looks really good in those pics, She's going to have a great year staying on 4's. Nicole's gym moves them along if they have a kip and a cartwheel on the beam, but she bearly can do both, she'll get really good at the state meet(at the end of the season) just like this year, she came in 10th in the state.
I have a really crappy camara -Kodak thing- so my pic's are yucky. My oldest daughter is the one with the good camara, I use it every now and then when I can. Hope your dd has lots of 1st this year -best of luck- :thumbsup2

Hey neighbor, Westerly here. RI is a beautiful state....wouldn't move anywhere else. There are some great shots off of Newport and Jamestown. I got some really great ones on the same day of the House on the Rocks. I would post them, but they wouldn't fit the theme of this thread. Talk about a great spot!

It is a big lens but not THAT big, I generally hand hold it for the whole game, I never use a monopod. What I did find helpful was a better neck strap.I think the VR helps a lot! I also use it with the 1.4 teleconverter so no need to get a 300.
It really is an amazing lens

"Nicole's gym moves them along if they have a kip and a cartwheel on the beam,"

That's awesome for Nicole!!I love her hair in the bun! I wish our girls would go that route, but they all prefer the bouncy, high pony tail!! (pain in my you-know-what to curl! :rotfl: ) Colleen just got her kip and has been doing the cartwheel since the middle of last season. The gym we're with - Queen City Gymnastics (QCG) - tends to be on the more conservative side of moving kids. We had several 2nd years that I thought would be moving that didn't. They also don't work skills up as much as other places in our area, until the girls are really solid in that levels skills. It's a bit frustrating at times, but we like the gym and Colleen has no desire to try another gym at this time. They have however, taught her the entire beam routine for Level 5, and I'm not sure the rational behind that, (except to keep her challanged while she's still a 4?) She's hoping for a good year, so we'll see! Thanks for the compliments by the way! Your camera takes great shots - I have a real issue with blur on her motion shots - they seldom turn out well. Good luck this year!!

I love her hair in the bun! --- In the first pic of Nicole her bun is way off center :goodvibes -- It is a lot easier then curling thats for sure. She was also on the All-Star cheer team last year and they used cheer curles and at a few meets we seen gymnastics teams using them too.
I was just wondering if your gym goes to the IGA Chicago Style Meet? I think its kinda near you, we go ever year. thanks for all the nice comments.
best of luck, and keep take great pic's

I went out and shot a few frames for a local soccer league last weekend.

Great pictures everyone. Have learned a lot from the tips provided and have been playing around with them. I have never heard of the relationship between focal lenght and shutter speed before. Having a real hard time getting enough light indoors without a flash at that quick of an exposure. Looking forward to more pics and tips.

DragonSlyr,
That's a great vault shot - love the ponytails flying! Very nice - your color looks good too. I tned to have to work the light settings a bit to be sure the colors are as close as possible. But getting enough light without a flash is a problem in gymnastics. Can I ask what camera you're working with? My Canon S2IS is ok, but I dream of a lovely SLR!!!:)
