Photo Assignment: April/May '07: Spring

Unfortunately for us, absolutely no sign of flowers yet. Instead, the first sign of spring is the return of birds!

Robin4.jpg

Taken with Canon Rebel XTi
70-300mm IS lens, at 300mm, hand-held (ack!)
Aperature priority f/11
Shutter speed 1/100
ISO 100
White balance on set on cloudy
Developed in Lighthouse: fill-in 10; brightness +10 and vibrancy +35
Cropped from 56 x 36 to 4 x 6 in PSE
Unsharp mask: can't recall the settings!

If I remember the "rule" correctly, the lens at 300mm meant my shutter speed should have been at least 300. Wow, I was way off! Should I have increased my ISO to increase the shutter speed?

You could bump up the ISO or used a wider aperture or both. At ISO 100, f/11, 1/100th. To get to 1/320 that is 1 2/3 stops faster so bumping to ISO 200 is 1 stop and changing the aperture to f/9 (2/3 of a stop) would be 1 2/3 stops for the camera to choose 1/320. To keep f/11 you'd bump the ISO to 400 (2 stops faster) and that would make the shutter go 2 stops faster to 1/400. Some camera's can change ISO in 1/3rd stops. I don't know if the XTi does or not. To keep ISO 100, you'd change the f/stop to f/6.3 to get to 1/320.

If I remember the "rule" correctly, the lens at 300mm meant my shutter speed should have been at least 300.

Keep in mind that the "rule" is just a guideline that some people find helpful. There isn't anything magical about it. In fact, the "rule" was created back before DSLRs, so for an apples-to-apples comparison, you should take into account the crop factor of your camera. In other words, you should shoot a 30mm lens at 1/480 or faster based on the original spirit of the rule. The important thing is not really what the rule says; it is important for you to get a sense for how well you can hand-hold a lens at a particular focal length.

In your case, IS should help and knock that down 2-3 stops. I would also be tempted to increase my aperture (assuming I had sufficient depth-of-field) before I'd up my ISO.

Since you were shooting at ISO 100, increasing it wouldn't be a problem. There is little difference between ISO 100 and ISO 200, but there is a huge difference between 400 and 800 or 800 and 1600.

100 respect points to the first person who guesses... i'll say what it is shortly if no one does get it.

nup and nup.

Dismom+two - i love the purple with white and a touch of green. we actually have trees at the moment that are flowering a nice dark purple.

These are two of my very first attempts with my little Kodak Easyshare on Macro - like 0bli0 we are in Autumn, so these are from spring last year.

Callistemon (Bottle Brush) flower

Both from my back yard. Don't know how many of those we will have this year as we have such a severe drought and we can't water our gardens. The poor old plants are relying on whatever falls from the sky, and that is not very much at the moment!!

Well, it is a great example of a "Spring" picture :) , but I can't imagine where it is from. If not a bike, then maybe a go-cart of some sort?

Here's my first one that I like:

SOOOOOOOOO jealous of you right now :) I missed the 4 homers in a row last night, I couldn't believe it.

Not much as far as composition - but seeing my pool boy (hubby) cleaning the pool always puts me in the mood for warm weather.

I've been out every day with my camera but there's still not a lot of spring around here. Will try to post a few more if I can get some decent shots.

Had the 105mm marco lens on this evening and was playing around with stuff found in the backyard.

Kyle, what a great game you saw last night! We were howling during those four homers! That'll be a game to remember. And BTW - next time, don't forget your Nikon. :confused3
