I'll be in Philly for a couple nights next week. And one of my life goals is to try the absolute best cheesesteak sandwich in Philly. So where do I find it?

Looking at the Dalessandro's Menu now. What is the difference between a Cheese Steak ($9) and a Cheese Steak Hoagie ($9.75)?

A cheesesteak hoagie has lettuce, tomato, and onions. A cheesesteak is just the steak and cheese. We like ours with fried onions and mushrooms too!

Ah thanks, I'll pass on the lettuce tomatoes. But fried onions sounds good.

We like Geno’s too! (But not natives; just blow through every once in a while - last time it was at 4am in the pouring rain, and it was pretty crowded with locals!) The staff can be a little impatient with out of towners, but being from Boston it doesn’t bother us too much! :rotfl2:

Cheesesteaks are quite good but prepare to be disappointed if your expectations are too high, even at the places Disers have recommended. Sorry, but as with EVERYTHING you can think of, NOTHING can live up to the hype. I’m not a native but have lived in the Philadelphia/ south Jersey area for 35 years. And I would say the same thing about every food item I can think of, even stuff I love.

I've done pretty well in the past with food I was dreaming about. Boston Lobster Roll, Austin BBQ, Naples Pizza. Obviously a cheesesteak is only about $10 so not expecting to be completely blown away but I'm sure it will make my tummy feel good.

I grew up in South Philly so had my share of Pat's and Geno's and they are good but I'm not find of Cheese Whiz on my steak. Reading Market is an iconic place to visit and has great food. My husband worked a block away and it was always a favorite stop. Where I would recommend is based more on where you are staying in the city. Every neighborhood has the steak shop they think is the best.
