Hi everyone!

I found out today that I am human. :rolleyes1 I had a scheduled 3 miler that I went out on this morning. A relatively short distance compared to my last run of 12.6. At about .25 miles into the run I felt an "uncomfortable feeling" in my right thigh. I pulled up and shook it out, tried to run again and it was a bit more unpleasant. So, I walked the balance of my 3 miles. My pace sucked, but I finished. I believe what I have is affectionately known as a hip flexor strain. Here is the information I've found online about it.

What is a hip flexor strain?
A strain is a stretch or tear of a muscle or tendon, a band of tissue that connects muscle to bone. The tendon may be inflamed. Inflammation of a tendon is called tendonitis. The hip flexor muscles allow you to lift your knee and bend at the waist.

How does it occur?
Hip flexor strain occurs from overuse of the muscles that help you flex your knee or do high kicks. This injury occurs in bicyclists, athletes who jump or run with high knee kicks, athletes like soccer players who do forceful kicking activities, and people who practice the martial arts.

What are the symptoms?
You have pain in the upper groin region where the thigh meets the pelvis.

How is it diagnosed?
Your health care provider will examine your hip and thigh. You will have tenderness at the muscle and tendon.

How is it treated?
Treatment may include: putting ice packs on the injured area for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days or until the pain goes away
taking anti-inflammatory medicines prescribed by your health care provider doing rehabilitation exercises to help you return to your activity.

While you are recovering from your injury, you will need to change your sport or activity to one that does not make your condition worse. For example, you may need to swim instead of bicycling or running.

How long will the effects last?
The length of recovery depends on many factors such as your age, health, and if you have had a previous hip flexor injury. Recovery time also depends on the severity of the injury. A mild hip flexor strain may recover within a few weeks, whereas a severe injury may take 6 weeks or longer to recover. You need to stop doing the activities that cause pain until the hip has healed. If you continue doing activities that cause pain, your symptoms will return and it will take longer to recover.

When can I return to my normal activities?
Everyone recovers from an injury at a different rate. Return to your activities will be determined by how soon your hip recovers, not by how many days or weeks it has been since your injury has occurred. In general, the longer you have symptoms before you start treatment, the longer it will take to get better. The goal of rehabilitation is to return you to your normal activities as soon as is safely possible. If you return too soon you may worsen your injury.

You may safely return to your activities when, starting from the top of the list and progressing to the end, each of the following is true:

You have full range of motion in the leg on the injured side compared to the leg on the uninjured side.

You have full strength of the leg on the injured side compared to the leg on the uninjured side.

You can walk straight ahead without pain or limping.

How can I prevent a hip flexor strain?

Hip flexor strains are best prevented by warming up properly and doing stretching exercises before your activity. If you are a bicyclist make sure your seat is raised to the proper height.

I do have some good news. First, I didn't really run on it after it began to hurt so I don't think I did much straining of it. Second, I can walk virtually pain free (I feel a dull presence of pain, but it doesn't "hurt") and third, I am going to take tomorrow and the next day off (if needed) to rest it. I haven't yet iced it down, but may do that before bed tonight just in case it helps. I was at work all day on the leg and going up and down stairs without pain. So, if this is a strain it is a mild one.

I think the biking last night at the YMCA might have weakened it, it still feels similar to how it felt during the pushing on the bike. The run just twanged the pre-existing issue.

I'll consider myself lucky, but not out of the woods yet. Has anyone else dealt with one of these before?

Hey guys!

Howard - OUCH! Go easy for a bit....maybe you overdid it with all that crosstraining? At least you can walk, though, which is a good sign. Ice that bad boy & give it perhaps, until Monday to heal?

LouMongous - I'm feeling better, thanks. I'm too excited for you for DL, I read today that Danny Dreyer, the guy who wrote the ChiRunning book, will be @ the expo. Try & catch him... and read the book!! :hippie:

Mike - Tell Agent 99 I said have a great time!;) :rolleyes1 . Now, now, I trained for that Ultra a bit... . I'm going to surf the web tonight for a training plan that appears to be for a 5k, but is actually for a marathon! How do you deal with that 6 miles back home after work??:scared:

Hi to all my other BOTS :grouphug: !

I CT today for 30 mins. on elliptical. I'll get back to running in the a.m. I guess & as mentioned above, I'm still seeking that perfect training plan for Philly!!popcorn:: Everyone else is already in the groove now, right?

Hi everyone. I feel like a slug. I did nothing today. Ugh. I am resting my right thigh as ordered by so many nice and caring people around the WISH boards.

The pain I felt when running (or attempting to) is gone. I have a lingering uncomfortable area in what feels like the back of my leg in the hamstring area. I am a bit confused by it all. I used "The Stick" on the back and front of my leg for a while tonight and felt no great relief or benefit. There was no pain or pressure caused due to the use of "The Stick" so I think I am getting better. I haven't iced it because it doesn't hurt, it isn't swollen or tender. I guess I am doing the RE and not the entire RICE like so many smart people advocate.

I am going to play it very cautious and not do anything beyond walking tomorrow. I want to get some miles in just leisurely strolling around where I usually walk. A mile is a mile in my book. Plus I won't feel as if I am doing "nothing".

I won't plan on trying to run/jog on it (if it feels 100%) until the weekend. It is supposed to cool down over the weekend and that might be a good time to get out. I am hoping this slightly wierd feeling goes away in my leg and I will be back to my old (and wiser) self.

I will be looking into proper stretching techniques for the thigh/legs prior to a run so I can look to avoid this in the future. Looking back I think I know what may have caused it. The stationary bike I used at the YMCA had a pedal that was rubbing and slowing down the progress I was making. It created drag that I had to push extra hard to overcome. I think that stressed it a bit and then the run the next morning "twanged" it.

Thanks again for the advice everyone!

:grouphug:

Howard

Howard - I hope that you are able to recover from this quickly:wizard:
I'm sorry that I don't have any good advice (other than don't run if it hurts) I know I am pretty lucky in that i have yet to really injure myself during the almost 2 years that I've been running (knock on wood).

Cindy - Love the new avatar:thumbsup2 51 miles run in a week is just crazy:laughing: and I'm glad you haven't suffered any injuries to date. My LR pace is too fast, I know, but I've always had problems slowing down pace on LR's. My body just likes that pace (MP for me in the good old days) and I've yet to find a way to slow it down to where I should be. Have an absolute blast showing Matt around at WDW!!

Howard - Glad to hear your injury seems to be on the mend:wizard: and please be careful with it for a while. I suffer the same when I do yoga at times and the poses tweak my hip flexor. As for stretching, anything that stretches the psoas muscles would be appropriate.

Jodi - I have multiple training programs going on and I just alternate as the mood strikes me:confused3 . Heck, I don't even know if I'm running the 1/2 or full at this point:rotfl: . I hope your stomach bug is gone:hug: and you find the perfect training program before too long:rolleyes1 .

Lou - The DL 1/2 should be an awesome time:yay: !! Have you ever been to DL beforepopcorn:: ? Yeah, work has me crazy these days as well, which can only act as an incentive to run off all of my stress:crazy:

Mike - Have a blast:) wherever/whenever!! I agree with Jodi, 6 miles home after work is impressive:worship: .

Dave - Are you home yetpopcorn:: ?

I'm going to go out for an hour this morning for an easy run:cheer2: . I'm optimistic about my ability to run daily pain-free but those LR's still have me worried at this point :scared: 9 planned for this Saturday so we'll see...

Greetings Everyone: I got back Tuesday night, and spent Wednesday trying to get caught up with things at home and work. I must admit I have a little GI trouble that followed me home. It's interesting - nothing bothered me while I was in Nicaragua, but it caught up with me yesterday. However, even having the "runs", I was able to go for a run yesterday. It was my first run in about a week. I did 3.2 miles around Mt. Hope Cemetery in 28:23 min/8:52 mpm. I was pretty happy with that considering the travelling and being dehydrated. Tonight is a x-country race at a park right next to my neighborhood. They also have a kids race that DD7 pooh: wants to run in. So we may both bike to the park and run.

As far as the Yeti goes, I'm still waiting to see how things settle out at work. I'll keep an eye on the registration. I'm also hoping I can bring my DW down for an adult weekend. So if I don't get into the race - maybe we'll just head over to the F&W festival at EPCoT.

Greetings Everyone: Here are some pictures of the monkeys I was able to see on our hike around the Mombacho Volcano.

Click on this to see a video and really hear the calls the monkeys were making.

Dave - I hope you can make it down for the Yeti - Although the video you took of those monkeys sounds like a Yeti! That's too cool! Sorry about your poopy-problems, welcome to MY world :lmao: !

Cindy - That's a TERRIFIC plan for me! What are you talking about? Did you punch my name in or something to get that schedule? :rotfl2: BTW, I LOVE your avatar, too!

Howeird - I think the bike was the culprit! Go easy maybe even until Mon.?:confused3

Sara - How was your run this a.m.?? 9 this weekend? Wow, that's ambitious :yay: . I think my new plan that Cindy found for me has me running 9 miles about 5 weeks out from the marathon....;) one of my longest runs :lmao: .

OK, so I didn't run this a.m. either...this running thing is so over-rated!

Happy Thursday Evening All,

Dave
- Welcome back. Sorry about the Montezuma's revenge but nice job getting out for a run. Did you and DD do the X-country race? That sounds pretty cool.

How do you deal with that 6 miles back home after work??:scared:
Dodo - I'll be honest with you, it was very tough. 6 miles to work and then turn around and do 6 more miles home less than 12 hours later... after working all night... Tough for an old dude. But, it was good getting both runs out of the way. I'll continue trying it for a few weeks and see how it goes.

Cindy's training plan looks perfect for you!! You may want to scale back a bit on the speedwork however. No reason to risk injury. Gotta get to the starting line healthy.;) :lmao:

Howard - I'll chime in with everyone else. Take it slow and easy. No reason to push it too early.

Sara - It's great to hear you are mostly pain free. Just be careful on the LR.

Hey to everyone else.

Rest day for me today. Scheduled for 12 tomorrow. That will be my longest run in quite a long time. Hopefully, I won't die.

Greetings Everyone: Beware - drive by post... :car:

DD7 pooh: and I ran in the x-country races by our house last night. DD7 pooh: ran the 400m. She says she's planning on working up to the mile over 3 weeks. So last night was the 400, next week she says she'll do the 800, and the final week she'll do the mile. She was very proud at running the 400 last night. Afterwards she planted herself at the bottom of a hill to watch me run the full x-country race. This race is slightly longer than a 5k, and has a killer 1/4 mile long steep hill (this is the hill we go sled-riding down in the winter). After that hill, we go into the woods, and it is a rolling up and down course after that. I don't quite know how long it is, but when I measured it on my Garmin last year it clocked in at 3.37 miles.

I finished in 24:43 min for a 7:20 mpm pace!!! :woohoo: :cool1: :yay: I couldn't believe it. My running has been really sporadic this month with our vacation to Disney plus the trip to Nicaragua. Plus, I had some Jodi trouble all day on Wednesday and into yesterday. I wasn't expecting much at all. I was very happy and surprised. I checked my times from last summer in this race, and my best time was ~26:35 min. I guess that speedwork is paying off.

OK, gotta do some work.

Hi everyone!

I have not run/XT'ed or anything mildly strenuous since Tuesday when my three miler turned into a 3 mile walk. I have not had any pain, tenderness or soreness for the last two days. So, I think I am good for a trial run of 3 (easy ones) tomorrow. If that works out well, I'll run again on Sunday (possibly 5 miles). However, if I feel a twinge of any sort on Saturday, I'll scale it back to a walk and continue to rest it.

I will be researching recommended stretching exercises for the thigh tonight and make sure I am prepared for the 3 miles tomorrow morning.

I'll post an update then, hopefully a good one.

Enjoy your weekends everyone! HAPPY TRAINING!

Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to post my "post hip flexor strain" numbers for this morning.

As promised I went out for an easy run of 3 miles. I took it easy and did well. Before I get ahead of myself, I downloaded some stretching exercises for the hip flexor and stretched it out good before I hit the road this morning. My plan was to run 3, but I decided to run 4 when everything seemed to be going pretty well. I definitely took it easy. I stopped at the end of each mile and stretched out a bit more (just as a precaution).

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking about the hip flexor with every foot strike. I certainly felt its presence once or twice, but nothing more than a "Hey! Remember me!" kind of feeling.

Here are my stats for today:

Miles: 4
Time: 38:29
Pace: 9:37

Splits:
10:07
9:59
9:18
9:04

Tomorrow I will take the same precautions and run 5 (or 6) if I am feeling up to it. At this point, I should be.

Have a great weekend!

:grouphug:

Looks like an all dudes sort of couple of days.

Dave - Great job on the race!! That's some big-time fast. Congrats to DD as well. That's great that she is setting some good goals for herself.

Howard - It sounds like you're well on the road to recovery. It also sounds like a very prudent approach you are taking.

Howdy to everyone else.

On the running front, I did my 12 miles yesterday morning. I traversed 12 miles and didn't die. That's about all the good I've got to say. I'll try to get 7 in tomorrow sometime.

Take it easy everyone.

Hey all,

Quick post - Ran 16 miles yesterday around my neighborhood in 2:21:03 (8:48 pace). Not too bad but my pace got worse every mile I ran (ranged between 8:38 to 9:03). Need to work on trying to maintain my pace for these LR's.

Sorry for the quick post. Have a nice Sunday!!!

Lou

Hey Everyone: I got 10 miles in yesterday. Nothing too fast - 1 hour 37 min for a 9:42 mpm pace. I took walk breaks every 2 miles. I was feeling a little tired as it was my 4th day in a row running. I'm trying to get back on track after my Nicaragua trip.

Dave - Great pace on that race!

Lou - you've been running pretty fast - what's you goal pace for the marathon?

Howard - I hope your run today went as well as your run yesterday did. Don't push it too soon!

Sara
- Were you able to get your 9 miles in? How'd it go?

Cindy - I'm so excited for you about your Disney trip! Matt's gonna have a newbie blast! Where are you staying & for how long?popcorn::

I'm pretty excited too. I'm actually almost all packed - I never pack ahead time. We are staying for three nights at that Portofino Bay (at Universal) and 5 nights at POR.

My plan peaks at 54 miles but has about 4 weeks that hover around the 50 mile mark. We'll see how it goes.

Do you still only run 4 days a week when you get up to that mileage? If so, that sounds crazy hard.

Cindy- Have a great trip. We had 4 nights at POFQ, and we loved it. I walked up to Riverside, and the girls and I went swimming at Riverside. It was really nice.

Thanks Dave! I've actually stayed at POR twice before and (liked it a lot). I wanted to stay at POFQ this time, but we could only get the AP rate at Riverside, so Riverside it is!

I was so tired earlier that I forgot to post about my running. I ran 17 this morning and have felt completely drained of energy ever since. I felt pretty tired for most of the run too. I'm glad that I won't be doing a long run for another 2 weeks - I think my body is ready for a break.

Hello Athletes! Thank you for all your support. I really need and appreciate it. I hope your weekend is going well. I played chicken off and on with thunderstorms today.

I ran two miles earlier in the day and made it home to witness a hail storm with hail 1/4 to 1/2" in size and smaller. Then it cleared up most of the afternoon and now it is raining cats and dogs and thundering with lightning outside. I ran 2 miles early on and 6 this evening. Here are my stats:

Miles: 8.01
Time: 1:11:20
Pace: 8:54

Splits:
9:08
8:35
9:09
9:22
8:37
8:49
8:41
8:55

I think the Hip Flexor strain is behind me for now. I was cautious today and stretched it out before and during the run. I felt pretty good overall and I think my splits are evidence of that.

I hope everyone has a great week!
