Chester - Geeze!! I knew you were happy with your pace but I didn't realize you CRUSHED your PR by that much. WTG!!

Dave - Thanks for posting the pictures. How long did it take you to download them? Oh yeah, 4 minutes! Can't wait to hear your full blown race report.

And we head for port-a-john city at the Pentagon. As far as I know this is the last documented time that Sara smiled.
Poor Sara - Our Jeckyll and Hyde WISH runner! I think she's catching so much grief because she's so happy the rest of the time that when she puts her "game face" on the change is... is... is damn scary!:scared1:

Congrats all! Was thinking of you when I was slowly recovering from ToT Sunday morning!;) It sounds like everyone had some smash up times:thumbsup2 Can't wait to meet ya'll in January!

I warned you guys it is so scary and I really do feel bad about it:sad1: . Avoidance is your best line of defense when I am running because it can never be goodpopcorn:: . Any other time I'd truly give you the shirt off my back but when I run it's every girl for herself:lmao: !

Cindy - Thank you so much for the link. That is the best:thumbsup2

Dave - Loving the pics! Thanks for sharing:hug: . Admittedly, not much smiling after the last pic for the remainder of the race:laughing: .

Chester - Awesome race report!!! You rock with the new PR:woohoo:
Happy birthday to your DD also:cheer2: .

Jodi - Very inspirational words to Cindy;) I know you're going to try real hard to buy into them someday soon:rolleyes1

I will post a race report sometime this week. I had the first part of my bone scan this morning and I am going back for more pics soon. I am feeling pretty fine today:banana: .

Thanks so much for the reports and the pictures! What an AWESOME medal!! Fantastic time, Chester! Again, all of you did a super job!! Sara, keep us updated on the doctor's report! :goodvibes Anne

Good evening MCMers & others! Just had a few more things I wanted to say about the weekend. My race report is on the race report thread (imagine that).

Chester - Love the photo of you in your loin cloth!:rotfl2: You look a little different than b4 the race:confused3 . :thumbsup2 SWEET job on that PR, wish i could've been there to congratulate you in person afterwards, but I was trying to get home. Happy B-Day to that luck DD of yours! Did she ever find the shop vac?:rotfl: Bruce & I were sooooo angry with ourselves for forgetting to inquire further about your dad & his career as a marine! Bruce was looking so forward to hearing about him:sad2: Next time, for sure!!

Dave - This part should only take me about...4 minutes to type:laughing: You scoffed when I told you that I was waiting for the contents of my bladder to dissipate into my body somehow; that I had to go to the bathroom, but I'd just stop drinking until that liquid already in me was all used up & I wouldn't have to go anymore...you laughed:laughing: . Well, nay-sayer, I have a feeling that if i DID stop @ the porta potty on the way somewhere, it would've taken me prolly about 4 mins. or longer to take care of things. However, I stuck w/ my theory & finished, ahem, beFOUR you.:rotfl2: Honestly, I thought you just got sick of running w/ me & ditched me after those 16 or so miles. Hey, can I get copies of those pics you took?

Mike - Shhhhhh, Sara doesn't know how creepy her transformation is yet. Rumor has it she's going to don her running shoes & race gear tomorrow night:scared1: , the poor neighborhood kids are in for quite a scare - hope the candy she hands out is worth the price of some new underwear:rotfl2: . How're those legs feeling today? Are you back @ work yet, or do you have another 43 days off in a row??? Alas, there was no robot dance, Mike. I know, I know, I've let everyone down:sad2: . Perhaps after the GOOFY?

Sara - Hey there:rolleyes1 . Waiting for your full race report to find out what exactly goes on inside your head when you're runningpopcorn:: . When do you get the bone tests back?

Colleen - What's doin' w/ your walking schedule & doctor appts.? What did that sports medicine guy say that you went to see on Friday say? See, everything happens for a reason:sick: , hope your family is feeling better:grouphug: .

Cindy - How are you feeling today? And how is your hubby's calf/calves?

I miss our little thread:sad1: , and I'm scared to go over to that BIG one:eek: I'm feeling a little deflated today, all the excitements over with. My legs are still sore...I'll attribute that to not being able to stretch or soak after running. They feel, today, like they should've felt yesterday. Yesterday was pretty silly, trying to walk & all.

Jodi - Legs are better than yesterday but hopefully worse than tomorrow.

Sorry, only 7 days off. Well, added to the 3 I took off for the race weekend :rolleyes1 .

There better be some dancin' going on after Goofy!

I'm feeling a little deflated today, all the excitements over with.
Yep, I was telling Kathy today that it felt a little like the day after Christmas. Big build up, lots of fun, but kind of an empty feeling now that it's past.

Good Morning MCMers :surfweb:

OK, let me post my official weekend report now that I have a few more pictures downloaded. My Dad and I met Sara and her family in the hotel lobby Saturday morning and took the Metro out to the Expo. We picked up our numbers, and then Sara and I separated. Dad and I strolled around the Expo checking out all of the booths.
DSC01332.jpg

We were looking at one booth that had "unofficial" MCM t-shirts and such. They had some shirts that said "Marathon Wife", "Marathon Dad", etc. We looked for a little bit, and then wandered on. I then feel someone tap my shoulder. It's the salesman from the t-shirt booth, and he says "I want you to have this for your Pop". He gave me (well my Dad really) one of the Marathon Dad t-shirts - no charge. I thought that was really cool. Dad was touched, and decided to go back to the booth to buy the coffee mugs we were looking at.

After the Expo, Dad and I drove out to the Air and Space Museum/Hangar by Dulles Airport. Dad worked as an engineer for the space program when I was born in the late '60's, and it was the highlight of his career. He was in heaven at this museum. He was just walking around with his mouth open, going "wow", and taking pictures of everything. We had a great time at the museum.

DSC01348.jpg

I sat down on some chairs, and put my feet up to try to save my legs for the marathon on Sunday. We left to go have an early dinner at Lonestar Steakhouse. On the drive back, we were going by the Iwo Jima memorial so we decided to stop and check it out. I told Dad I wanted to show him where we finished so he could get a sense of the area. We found a parking space, parked, and got out and looked around. I figured if we wanted to see the memorial we should do it now - because there's no way we could get near it when the marathon was going on. [Note - that was an incredibly good decision.] Dad had never seen the memorial, and we had a great time walking around. The Netherlands Carillion even started chiming (it was 6:00pm), and it was playing the tunes of all the armed service branches.

DSC01360.jpg

After walking around the Iwo Jima memorial, we went back to the hotel and I got all my stuff ready for the marathon the next day.

Marathon Morning- Up early, get all my gear on, eat an energy bar and we meet Sara and Jodi in the hotel lobby.
DSC01362.jpg

We make our way to the Metro and meet Chester and Tracy at the entrance.
DSC01363.jpg

We get off the Metro, and Mike and Kathy find us as we're getting off.
DSC01364.jpg

So we have the whole crew together at the Pentagon for Port-a-John city where Jodi works her mojo picking the right porta potty line.
DSC01365.jpg

Colleen calls to WISH us well, and we're about ready to line up for the race. We work our way to the start, and I ask to be on the left hand side of the road because that's where I told my Dad I'd be. We have an airplane flyover and a goose flyover and we're ready to go. We cross the starting line in only 5 minutes which I thought was really good for all those people.

The 5 of us all start together, and as we run the first mile, we pass under the Arlington Memorial Bridge and see Tracy in her WISH shirt sitting off to the right up on the bridge. I never see my Dad, but it turns out he was on the bridge too on the other side. I was distracted by Tracy's shirt.

We wind our way through Rosslyn, and we start to break up a little bit. Mike and Sara move up ahead, Jodi and I are in the middle, and Chester is right behind us. We cross the Key Bridge, go through Georgetown, and around the Georgetown Reservoir. We catch up to Sara around mile 6, I try to chat with her some, worry I'm about to receive a forearm, and decide to leave her alone.

We turn around to head back towards downtown and the monuments. At mile 11 I see my Dad just past the Lincoln Memorial. I wouldn't have seen him but Sara's husband Mike yelled my name. I looked over to see Mike, and he pointed down. There was my Dad. I ran back to give Dad a hug.

Jodi and I are running together. I point out the sites like the famous statue of the guy with the hat. We're keeping up with the 4:15 pace group, but I'm starting to get tired. I normally take walk breaks during my LRs, and I have not taken a walk break yet. I'm going to pay for this later. We see Tracy near the Smithsonian and wave and say hello. We turn and pass the Jefferson Memorial around mile 15, and make a long loop around a golf course on an island in the Potomac River. This is where the course was the toughest for me. My legs are starting to ache, and I'm getting a little crabby. I also could use a water stop. We pass a first aid station at mile 16, and they're passing out tylenol. Cool, I'll take one of those. I tell Jodi that I'm going to walk at the next water stop. We finally get to it around mile 17. I fill my water bottle up, WISH Jodi well, and get my iPOD out.

I start listening to the DISUnplugged Podcast, and it's a good way to kill an hour and a half. My pace really drops off now as I take more walk breaks. I'm probably averaging closer to 11:00 min miles compared to the 9:30 mpm I was averaging. The 4:15 pace group is long gone now, but I'm still on pace to meet my goal of finishing in 4:30. We cross over the Potomac at mile 20 into Virginia, and we reach Crystal City. This is a double back section so I keep my eyes out for Jodi. This helps me through this part wanting to give Jodi a final cheer. We see each other near the turn around point around mile 22 - home stretch now. Mile 23-24 was a long boring stretch around the Pentagon. Not too much interesting here at all, and I'm glad I have the DIS podcast to listen to.

Now we're back on the road we started on, and we're picking up a lot more spectators. The podcast is over so I put my iPOD away. At mile 25 we run past the turn up to the Iwo Jima Memorial where the finish line is. Oooh, that's cruel. The finish line is so close, but we keep on going. How far do we have to go before we turn around? We reach the turn around point, and get a little bit of a downhill. Yahoo! I'm going to be close to 4:30, and if I push it I can beat Oprah's time of 4:29. I make the turn up to the Iwo Jima Memorial and the finish line. My Dad's standing right there at the turn at the start of the hill. I pass him, give him a thumbs up, and continue on to the finish line. I gotta push it to beat Oprah's time. I turn on whatever jets I have left. There's the finish line, I cross, stop my Garmin, and I'm at 4:28:50! Whoo hoo! I did it. I've also set a new PR by 35 minutes. I'm feeling good. I go up to the Iwo Jima Memorial, and get my finisher pictures taken.

Now comes the time to wait in line. I wait to get through the finish line area, get my water, banana, and some Powerade. Meet my Dad at the "W" banner, and find Mike, Kathy, Chester, and Tracy. We snap some pictures, and go our separate ways.
DSC01366.jpg

Dad and I head back to the hotel. By the time we catch the Metro the lines are gone. I think they put some more trains on duty, because our train was totally empty when everyone boarded at Rosslyn. We slept well, and got up to go to the airport Monday morning.
DSC01367.jpg

It was a great race, a great weekend, and I feel like I made some new friends. I'm definitely feeling a bit of the post-marathon letdown and blues, but all and all it was a fantastic weekend.

Dave - Love your report...did we really see all those things you said we did?:confused3 , Wow, I had no idea! That is one big 'ol improvement on your first marathon, huh?:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 NICE JOB!:woohoo: . I will really miss you in January, sure you can't just come down & run w/ me for a while?:rolleyes1 . That's so cool about the free t-shirt, nice to know that some people are still like that (I mean, not me, of course...:rotfl2: ). So glad your dad enjoyed himself - Bruce & I wondered if he was a bit overwhelmed with all of us (I know Bruce was:goodvibes ).

OK, must stop thinking about the weekend, getting all kinds of depressed. As the memories of my thoughts "OK, WHY am i doing this? I gotta stop & walk. This is it for a while. What makes me think I can run 26 miles? What was I thinking signing up for GOOFY? I must've passed mile marker 22 & just not seen it, right?" start to fade, I'm already looking forward to January. . I thought my DH was gonna punch me when I said that to him this a.m.:lmao: . He's still reeling from the close call on the flight thing:scared1: . Oh yeh, did I mention that my flight out of Disney is on Sun. after the marathon as well? Yep, around 4 pm or so...:rolleyes1 . He bets I won't make it to the airport in time, I say I will...Any takers out there:dance3:

Race Report
DH, DD(10) & DD (6) headed out early Friday morning to the airport only to have our flight into BWI delayed for nearly four hours due to fog in ALB. Hoping this was not an ominous beginning to the trip we eventually got to our destination, picked up the rental car and drove to Arlington. I had originally planned to hit the expo on the way but the flight delay forced me to change the plans because I didn't want to chance missing the WISH meet or battling DC traffic during rush hour on a rainy Friday afternoon.
Got comfy in the room and settled in to do some work when I got a call from Jodi to see if we had safely arrived at the hotel. We planned to meet her and Bruce down in the hotel lobby to catch a shuttle to the restaurant since it was pouring out. Got to the restaurant right at 6:30 and found Mike, Kathy, Chester and Tracy waiting for us. After the formal introductions we got busy chatting like old friends:grouphug: . Poor Dave and his Dad were delayed a bit due to the traffic but we were delighted that they were able to make it after all. After a wonderful meal we headed back to the hotel for some serious sleep. It had been a long day and I wanted to get the kids some sleep since they had their big races the next day:woohoo: .
Got everyone ready Saturday morning to head out to the expo with Dave and his Dad to pick up our race packets. It was a painless process getting the chip and goody bag but I was sorry I didn't have any extra time to actually see the expo booths.
We had made plans to meet up with Mike and Kathy at the kids races so our kids could run together. I was so thankful to have friends to hang out with and it worked out perfectly for the kids. The girls really were too sweet holding hands and it was truly a memorable experience for all.
After walking on the leg for 5 hours it was really throbbing so I thought it best to just spend the remainder of the day in the room icing and resting it. My poor kids just needed a bit of down time too so we laid low.
Sunday morning I had planned to meet up with Dave and Jodi in the hotel lobby so we could travel to the start together. We walked over to the metro station and hooked up with Chester and Tracy. After riding the metro to the Pentagon we were lucky enough to catch Mike and Kathy so our entire WISH team was assembled. It really meant a lot to me that we were all able to hook up before the start:grouphug: . We got our call from our WISH team member in spirit Colleen which was both happy and sad:hug: .
We made our way over to the corrals in anticipation of the start. I was still in denial about the fact that something could go terribly wrong with the leg so this was all kind of surreal for me. I had no plan, goal, etc. and I was just going to take it as it came, no matter what that meant. I didn't even plan on looking at the Garmin except for distance purposes. The WISH team ran together the first two miles and then I broke off. I had to ditch my throwaway shirt at that point so I went off to the sideline to put on my iPod. I guess I am just like a wounded animal who likes to go off by themselves to die:rotfl2: . :lmao: :rotfl: Actually, it is more like I get frustrated and then I get emotional and then I can't breathe, etc. so I just have to go way inside to block the rest of it out:scared1: . The miles are going by comfortably and I didn't expect to see my family but I was so very pleased to see them on the mall at mile 10 or so. DH commented to the kids that I was a happy runner at that point so it was all good:love: . I saw them again somewhere around mile 14 and I also had to use the public restroom at that point and the ladies in the long line were so kind to let me jump the line:thumbsup2 . I had waited for a port-o-potty twice previously and just had to bag it because of the wait:mad: . I liked Haines Point and then the bridge back into VA. The miles are coming along and since I was backing way off on pace I was feeling fine. The leg was hanging in there and I never felt it would be impossible. I walked/ran the last 4 miles or so while enjoying the crowds and the experience. It was a great course and my chip time was 5:01:53. Got my heat sheet and my medal from the Marines:rolleyes1 .
The worst part for me was the finish area and the agony of getting back to Crystal City. I nearly passed out in the metro station in Rosslyn. Thankfully I had a banana in my race bag because I was seeing big spots in front of me and I had to move to the side of the crowd to have a wall to lean on. I did eat and drink on the course but my stomach is always so iffy after a race that I can't get much in it successfully. I nearly called DH to tell him he had to get to Rosslyn to help me back because I was scared if I got on the metro I would pass out and not be able to get off:eek: .
I did make it back once the banana kicked in and went to the hotel lobby where DH and DD's were waiting for me. I was hoping to catch Dave so I could shower in his room but no luck so we headed back to BWI. After giving my stomach some time to settle we had a light dinner and waited for our 8:30 flight back home. Called Jodi from the airport to see if she had made it back home alright since I was worried about her cutting it close with her flight time. Got home at 11:00 p.m. and still had to shower and stretch.
The weekend for me was such a really good time. In my eyes 26.2 miles is merely the price to pay for the opportunity to spend time with such fine people. I have never been about the bling or the speed. I will happily :rotfl: cover the distance because it allows me the chance to have such wonderful life experiences. To those of you who commented on how good my kids were, thank you from the bottom of my heart:love: . I run to inspire my girls and to show them that nothing is impossible if you're willing to work for it and set goals for yourself. To be told that your kids are great is truly the highest compliment one can receive. They really were great sports this weekend and went above and beyond. You're sure to see them at WDW since they're veterans at being on the monorail at 3:30 each morning to cheer runners on at the Magic Kingdom. Never a complaint out of them either:love:
Once I get some results from the bone scan today I will be looking to start devising a training plan for WDW. I can't wait to see y'all there in just a mere 10 weeks or so (Dave you'll be there in spirit for sure!!).

Dave
I really liked reading your report and enjoyed the pictures. It was great to be in your company during the weekend. Congratulations also with beating your old PR by 35 minutes.

Jodi
I'd be happy to talk to you and Bruce about my Dad when we next meet again. I recieved quite a few "OOORAH for DAD" and comments during the race. There were quite a few other runners with tributes and memorials on their shirts there. I felt I was in the right place at the right time.

"Talking" to Dad got me through the rough spots between 16 and 21, and also helped to struggle the final hill to the finish.

Glad you got to the plane on time.

Mike
My legs are now finally back to normal. And, I know exactly what you mean about "that empty feeling". But, I really am looking forward to training for Goofy. I'm also pleased that I didn't aquire any injuries during the MCM training or the race.

I think if I would have slowed down a little at the start and kept to the HR I had planned on, The rough times I had at 16-21 would have been smoother. Some people never learn.

Chester
W.I.S.H. Half-Fast Marathon Team

Chester - How did I miss that you were doing GOOFY as well? Or did we discuss it & I just don't remember - just like I didn't remember that we were SUPPOSED to meet you & Tracy @ the Metro & we didn't just "meet" you there by accident..DUH:confused3 . Where are you staying in Jan.?

Mike, Colleen, Sara - Where are you all staying in Jan.?

OK, I gotta get to work - I've been here over an hour & haven't gotten a darn thing done.

Today I'm going to go over to the big boards:scared1: ...maybe.:confused3

Colleen - The hotel we stayed @ in DC was incredible, I highly, highly recommend it. The beds were incredibly comfy & the breakfast was great, a little better than your typical Continental fare. Can't say enough good things about it. They even opened up the b'fast an hour earlier (5 am) to accommodate runners on Sun. night. Friendly bunch, there @ a great price!

Sara - Waiting to hear about the bone scan

Sara
I had a great time reading your report.

We didn't know where you were on the course and waited around at the Family meet-up area. I wish we had known that you finished just behind me. We would have been happy to make sure you got back to Crystal City safely. I glad that everything worked out o.k., and you made your way safely home.

You and Mike have done a wonderful job of parenting your DD's. And this is not coming from someone whose own children are monsterous, they are just the opposite. It's just that I recognize and appreciate good work. Good job Mom and Dad.

Chester

Jodi
We are staying in our motorhome at Fort Wilderness. We will be there from Thursday the 10th until Monday the 14th. Tracy, Me, DS18, maybe DD16 and definitely 2 shelties (Myndi and Hairry).

See you in January.

I am enjoying reading everyone's race reports. Dave and Chester, congrats on the amazing PRs.

Sara - I hope everything goes ok with you leg.

Jodi - Thanks for asking about DH. He is still limping and still insists that his leg is fine.:rolleyes1

I am feeling fine, although I was actually more sore yesterday than Monday. I think sitting at my desk all day on Monday was not the best thing for my legs - my quads really started to ache!

I have a question from a novice to all of you more experienced marathoners, when are you planning on running again? I followed Hal Higdon's training plan to train for this marathon and he says it is ok to run on Thursday (tomorrow). I'm thinking about maybe running 2 or 3 miles tomorrow or maybe just waiting until the weekend. What are you all planning on doing?

Sara - Thanks for the report. Thanks also for being such a good sport! I was really excited to see Mike and the girls on the mall at around mile 11. I'll echo Chester. I wish we would've known you were having some issues getting back to Crystal City. We all would've really like to have been there for you. Heck, I'd have tossed you over my shoulder and walked you back if needed! (O.K., maybe that wouldn't have been the safest trip, but you get the idea)

Keep us updated on the bone-scan (Kathy still just shakes her head in disbelief about you running with the stress fracture. Somewhere between amazement and "She's whacked!")

Jodi - 4:00 flight out of MCO? In theory you should have a little more time than this weekend, but still...

We are staying at Pop (unless a great rate falls for someplace better falls from the sky) Thurs though Monday, I think.

Cindy - I was actually able to walk down the stairs without going "Oooh, Ahhh, Oooh, Ahhh" today so I seriously considered going for a little run but opted for a trip the gym instead. I rode a bike for 20 minutes and did some upper body weights. I will run 3 or 4 slow miles tomorrow. Don't feel any big pressure to do anything right away though.

Chester - It's great that you got some nice comments about your dad. I too saw a bunch of similar shirts. BTW, my birthday is in February in case you want to start the car shopping now!;)

Dave - Thanks for posting the pictures and great report. I find it so interesting hearing about the same experiences through someone else's eyes.

If anyone wants copies of pictures just PM me your e-mail address, and I'll send them to you. I'm happy to share.

Congratulations to all of you. I really enjoyed reading your race reports and looking at all the pictures.

Chester: I loved the tribute to your Dad. How touching. Congrats on smashing your PR.

Dave: Glad you enjoyed your weekend with your Dad. I'm sure he loved it. Thanks for posting the great pictures.

Jodi: I agree with your theory of not stopping at the bathroom during the race. Your body is very efficient at recycling. Glad you made it to the airport on time. You should come by the weekly thread now. I don't do a very good job keeping up with everyone, but you can reap the benefits from now until January.

Sara: I hope your stress fracture heals soon. I can't believe you ran a marathon with a fractured bone!! Great job.

Mike: Congrats on your race. Sorry you're feeling the post marathon let down.

I look forward to meeting most of you in January.

Cindy

Good Morning MCMers:

Whoo hoo, I got 3 miles in on the TM this morning before work. Legs feel pretty good after the marathon, and I did some good stretching.

Hey guys! Just wanted to drop in and say CONGRATULATIONS on MCM! I haven’t gotten a chance to make it through every single race report, but I’ve skimmed and it looks like you all had a great time. WISH I could have been there with you guys.

Can’t wait to see most of you in January!

Steve
