Dave - :grouphug: so very, very sorry for your loss. Lots of thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Please check in so we know you're hanging in there:hug: .

Colleen - Thanks so much for posting the pic:cool2: . I needed some inspiration to get back out there.

Jodi - WTG on your 14 miles:cheer2: !! Once again, I think we had carbon copy runs yesterday.

I am supposed to be packing for Chicago so I'd better get to it:thumbsup2 .

Sara - Have fun in Chicago, hope it's not too windy:) . Get home safely, and no training in odd spots, kay? Sorry to hear about that beat 1/2 marathon. All that way & no medal???? Where's the motivation:lmao: ? And yes, you're right, sounds like we had duplicate runs, once again. It was just awful, I can't believe Dave went 18 in that weather.

Colleen - Nice picture:thumbsup2 , although I'm sure my husband would do a double take:rotfl: over my shoulder if he saw that! How does your bod feel today?

Dave
I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family as you adjust to your loss. Like the storm before your 18 miler, the dark clouds will eventually pass and the sun will once again shine.

Jodi and Sara
Well, the 8 miles and the 18 miles are now history. Saturdays 8 averaged 10:37 @ 152 bpm (full marathon pace).

Sunday I prepared for the 18 by putting Body Glide on my feet and carrying adhesive pads and an extra pair of socks. I changed my soaked socks at 10 miles and finished with no blisters. I didn't need to tape my feet.

I did end up starting a little later than planned. When I turned the Garmin on at 5:30am, I got a low battery message. So, I plugged it in and stretched for 30 minutes. Before I left at 6:00am, I turned off all the alarms and light so I could get the most out of the undercharged battery. I did end up at 11.77 miles when the battery died. The last 6 miles were torturous since I didn't have a gadget to inform me of where I was, how far I've been, what my average pace was, what time it was and what my heart rate was.

Sunday's long run was the second time that I wore my Nathan hydration vest. http://www.nathansports.com/our_products/hydration_nutrition/hpl_020.html. It holds 2 liters of water in a bladder and a zippered pocket on the back and has 2 pockets for gels/beans on the front along with a zipered pocket on the front. I don't plan on using it for races, but it is great for long runs when I don't want to loop back by the house multiple times.

This week:
Tuesday 5

Thursday 5
Saturday 8
Sunday 13

Happy training to all,

Chester, wow, 8 and 18 back to back. That is awesome. It does kind of throw a person off when one of your gadgets goes awry.

This brings me to the whole MP3 debate. Are they saying NO MP3/IPOds or are they frowning against them? My second marathon in Chicago, I had it tucked in my pocket for 18 miles before I decided I needed a pick me up. Wow, once I turned on my MP3 player those last 8 miles flew by. At Disney last year, I didn't need it at all. MelR kept me distracted the entire time. She is one HAPPY runner!:lmao:

E confirmations, I just received my email and printed off my confirmation and bib number. Yeah!

As for training today, I got in a little speed work.
1.5 mile warm up at 5.8-6.2 on treadmill
4 x 1200 m at 7.0 with 2 minute rest interval between sets
about a 1 mile cool down
for a total of 6 miles.

I hope I can walk tomorrow!:wizard:

Dave - So sorry for your loss. Do know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was a bit MIA the last few days due to a visit from my mom and dad. They drive me a little nuts (and DW a lot nuts) but hearing Dave's bad news sure makes me appreciate them even more.

Colleen - Sorry about your idiot doctor. I've had slight ITB problems in the past and still get a little twingey if I run on the left side of the road too much (the camber of the road strains the outside of the knee). This is one case that rest really is the best medicine.

Sara - Good job on the Lake Placid half. I was thinking that you had bagged that one. Not much bling, huh? Too bad. Well, at least you have that inner sense of accomlishment, yada, yada.

Have a good trip to Chicago.

Chester - Good job on the runs over the weekend. I'm glad you didn't have any blister problems. Man, 2 liters of water? I have to admit I'm a bit of a minimalist. I'll take my Amphipod with 2 x 8oz bottles of water but that's about it.

Jodi - STOP STRESSING!! Save that for a few weeks from now. BTW, I know what you mean about these crazies not knowing what REST means. There is a distinct difference between "rest day" and "an easy day" in my book.

Just to catch up; I got my 18 mile LR in on Saturday. Got up and out by 6:30. I'm usually not the get up early to run type but we were having a BD party for DD11, I had to keep my parents entertained, etc, etc.

It was a pretty good run (as 18 milers go). Very steady 14 miles followed by 4 not so steady ones for an overall average of 8:24 mpm. My legs were plenty sore for the rest of the day and pretty stiff on Sunday as well.

I did get out for 6 on Monday. I ran it at a leisurely "Holy Crap, my legs hurt!" pace. I started feeling pretty good by around mile 4 though.

I'm scheduled for 8 on Tuesday but it will have to wait until Weds due to the need for sleep and about 3 conflicting activities for DD.

Take Care All.

Colleen
I think the MP3/Ipod/headphones ban really only applies to runners who are seriously competing for a "place" finish. I don't think it really applies to the typical runner.

"HEADPHONES AND IPODS: The MCM follows USA Track and Field rules regarding the use of headphones and other equipment on the MCM course. Rule 144, Section 3B states: The visible possession or use by athletes of video or audio cassette recorders or players, TV's, CD or DVD players, radio transmitters or receivers, mobile phones, computers or any similar devices in the competition area shall not be permitted."

Mike
2 liters of water doesn't seem like much when you are out there for almost 4 hours. But, I only carry the water if I'm on a long (over 10 miles) out and back loop. I also have Gu's, ID, Cash, Cell phone and TP that I carry on the longer runs because half of the run is out in the country. I think if I could run at your pace, I'd be able to travel lighter. Or maybe if I travelled lighter, I could go at your pace. Either way, I'm slowly getting faster.:)

I got my E-confirmation and my bib number is 22603.

Happy training to all,

Chester

Mike - What is up with that pace for your 18 miler:thumbsup2 , I am soooo jealous:rotfl: . I didn't know you were that quick, now I don't think i can talk to you either. Soon I'll be talking to myself on these boards (just like in real life)! :cheer2: Happy birthday to your DD, are your parents still in town?

Chester - Wow, that's a lot of "queer gear" you take with you on your run:rotfl: . I have these race ready shorts that I jam full o' stuff when I go on my LRs, too. Sometimes I think I eat too much gu out there. Oh well. I don't take $ or ID, but cell phone & TP are on my list as well. Nice run & pace on that 18 miler, I want to cry when my Garmin dies on me in the middle of a LR. Either that or I swear profusely!!

Sara - Are you in Chicago having fun??

Colleen - Are you able to walk today? How's that ITB thingie feel? So much for rest days & taking time off:sad2: Waiting for an update

Dave - Hope everything is going as well as can be expected. Let us hear from you when you get the time, please.

Training...50 mins. of running yesterday a.m. @ the buttcrack of dawn, 40 CT today on the Arctrainer (whatever that is), speedwork tomorrow, rest day Thurs:woohoo: , 30 CT Fri & 8 miles Sat. Sounds pretty easy once tomorrow's stupid fast stuff is out of the way.

[BColleen - Are you able to walk today? How's that ITB thingie feel? So much for rest days & taking time off:sad2: Waiting for an update.

OK, ok, I will rest tomorrow. Nothing, nada, in fact after I take the kids to school, I will go buy a starbucks and relax.

I went for another massage yesterday and found out that my quad muscles are all knotted and the muscles around my hipflexor feels like a rope. I put a heating pad on it tonight and I am going to try and stretch the knots out.

Any ideas how I can get my quad healthy?

Chester, thanks for the info on the headphones. I know they really cracked down on headphones at Grandmas marathon. Maybe Sara can enlighten us more on that.

Mike, wow, that was a speedy 18 miler. What finish time are you shooting for?

Jodi, so you are doing 8 on Saturday, what does everyone else have planned for a LR this weekend?

Sara , hope traveling isn't wearing you out!

Dave, thinking about you. :grouphug:

Mikenow I don't think i can talk to you either. Soon I'll be talking to myself on these boards (just like in real life)! :cheer2: Happy birthday to your DD, are your parents still in town?
Jodi - Now let's not go getting all attitudy! Sucking wind is sucking wind no matter what the pace. We're all going at it as hard as we can.

My folks left Monday morning, thanks for asking.

Good luck with your speed work!

Colleen - Sorry, no good specific advice for your quads but a day or two off does sound like a good idea.

As for what finish time I'm shooting for.... That's a tricky question. I finished my one and only in May in 3:40 but that was like the perfect storm. I didn't miss even one run in the 18 weeks leading up to the race. I had no injuries. It was a crisp, cool morning (windy though), and a small field.

I still feel a couple of weeks away from being in decent racing shape. I have no idea how the big crowd will affect my time and quite honestly, I think I'd rather run with you all and have as much fun as possible and not worry about pace. That said, if I really start knocking down some great LRs and it looks like I could possibly PR by a fair amount.... We'll see.

I'm resting today, see Colleen rest, see Colleen drinking her Starbuck's coffee...:surfweb:

I am very excited today. I checked the weather for this weekend and Saturday morning is going to be 63 degrees and Sunday morning 53 degrees! I have 18 planned for this weekend )thought about doing it today or tomorrow, but Jodi gave me my marching orders to rest, so rest I shall!;)

Colleen - I am so worn out I haven't run since SATURDAY:scared1: . I am considering it a reverse taper:lmao: . I don't remember the last time I haven't run three days in a row. I knew you'd be posing the iPod question.:confused3 I was okay without one for Grandma's but I also enjoy mine immensely for the distraction. I don't want to think about how much it hurts when I'm at 20 miles. I say rest the quad and stretch it whenever you can. The massage has to be great for it.

Mike - It looks like you'll have to wait a while for us at the finish line:thumbsup2 You are speedy!!

Jodi - Secretly, I am in a sick way at peace that Colleen has to take it easy for a bit in training so I won't have to pick up the pace at MCM to keep up with her. Chicago was fun for sure but some could argue too much fun. I am hoping to be up for a run tonight. Good luck on the speedwork today:woohoo: .

Dave - Thinking of you and yours:grouphug: .

Mike - Sorry about the 'tude, but as you know, i have serious speed issues:rotfl: , like not having any!! Overslept for my speedwork this a.m., so I guess it's this afternoon, if not, I'll do it tomorrow which is supposed to be a rest day:rolleyes1 . Can you say lazy??

Colleen - Ooooh, doesn't it feel nice to rest? Are you turning into Sara & feel the need to do something physical every day??? Sheesh. About the quad, those are hard to self massage, I'd go back into that hot bath, sorry. Glad to hear about your weather for Sat. It's getting cool here, too!!

Sara - Welcome home, start running, hurry, your losing all your fitness:lmao: . Puh-lease, 3 days in a row??? That's crazy

Greetings Everyone: Thank you all so much for your concern and sympathy over the death of my Mother. I really appreciate it. We're getting ready to leave now to drive down to Delaware for Saturday's services. I'm hanging in there. There's been a lot of ups and downs this week, and at times I've felt like an empty shell. Thanks for all your support though.

I did get out and run the past 3 days, just to get outside and get distracted. The runs weren't great, but it was good to be outside.

All my best to my teammates. I'll be back on Sunday.

Dave - Have a safe trip & hang in there:grouphug:

Just a quick training update. I bit the bullet tonight & went for my "speedwork" run @ 7 pm. MFM calls for a 20 min. run @ tempo pace w/ 10 min warmup & cool down. So, I walked the dog w/ my DS for a mile, changed, ran, & bagged the 10 min. cool down. I must say, there is something invigorating about running beyond a comfy threshold. When I was done I was nauseated & my lungs were burning a bit, so I guess that's good, right?:lmao: An 8:41 pace for a little over 2 miles. That's as good as it gets!

I'm starting to wonder about the ipod issue, too. I remember my last marathon wishing I had one for the last, oh, 8 miles or so. I used my son's today & LOVED it! It makes it so much easier, I've never run with one b4. I have an ipod shuffle, but haven't put any music on it (can you say lazy?). I'm thinking I may wanna get that thing ready for MCM.

Now I can have a real rest day tomorrow! :woohoo: :dance3:

Dave - Thinking of you and yours:hug: .

Jodi - Congrats on banging out the speedwork:cheer2: . Great pace. I hope you're not feeling it today:wizard: . The iPod is a serious motivator when you need it to be. I'm sure you'll be addicted soon.

Colleen - How are you feeling today after your rest day? When is your next massage?

Chester - Thanks for posting the iPod info and your bib #.

I ran outside last night without my Garmin for an hour. I probably overdid it because I am hurting today. I just feel really rundown and my knees, hips, and sciatic nerve are all upset with me. I am considering going back to my acupuncturist for relief. I did an hour of yoga and went to a Pilates class this morning. I am off to see Daughtry tonight:love: . I am going to try to bang out 20 on Saturday since I am leaving for WDW next weekend.

Happy training to all this week:cheer2: .

I am going to try to bang out 20 on Saturday since I am leaving for WDW next weekend.
.

 Take it easy, especially if you body is upset with you.

I am only running 3 times per week from here on in and cross training a couple of the other days. I ran my tempoyuckyaki run this morning. It wasn't much of a tempo though, around 9:30's, that is all I could muster, not because my knee/leg hurt, but I just didn't have any get up and go this morning. I am planning to run 18 this weekend, but I may wait until Sunday morning.

Jodi, oh, I need my MP3 player, especially those last few miles. I am going to download some new music because I am so sick of tunes I have on there.

Mike, you are thinking about running with us. That would be great. You can run ahead to the water stops and have oranges, bananas, and gels waiting for us when we get there!;) You are welcome to join our merry band, but I am sure you will be get antsy and want to take off, you are so speedy.

Chester, what do you have on for this weekend?

Colleen - Ahhh, now your thinkin'. 3 days a week is plenty from here on in, just keep up your cardio rate on the CT. Tempoyucky is hard in the a.m. & 9:30s aren't a bad thing, ya know, I'd be happy to do that consistently. Don't sweat that 18, do it whenever you feel like it, are you still going to try & jam a 20 miler in there somewhere?

Sara - :scared1: 20 miles Sat, zoiks! Be careful with that bod, try & relax in Disney & just carboload:rotfl: Maybe hit an elliptical a few times, but you'll be on your feet walking so much that I'd give the running thing a week off, enjoy your vacation w/o worrying about "training". I guarantee any one of us on these boards could run a marathon next weekend (if we prepared mentally:goodvibes ). I don't think there's much more we can do at this point. Have fun @ Daughtry tonight. I have tix to see Genesis on Sun. night!

OK, I'm going to put some music stuff on my ipod. If ya'll are bringing yours to the MCM I'd better have mine, otherwise I'll end up just talking to myself (why should Oct. 28 be any different):lmao: .

Colleen - I also think I am going to concentrate on XT'ing from here on out. I uttered the "deferment" word to DH today. Great job on the tempo run today:banana: . Glad you are pain free. Good luck on the 18 miles this weekend:cheer2: . The weather should be optimal for a sweet run:thumbsup2 .

Jodi - Genesis sounds awesome for the weekend:woohoo: !! Daughtry is more eye-candy (kind of like an MCM warmup). Definitely bring your iPod although you'll have 30,000 other people to strike up a conversation with if need be:confused3 .

I just vacuumed for an hour at Church and I am beat. I am hoping it's from traveling and I will feel like running on Saturday. If not then I will run my 8 miles at MP as per my training plan.
