Hey Canadave! Nice to see you still on here.

Taking the I-75 route is in my opinion the best way to go at that time of year. Now again if I was driving I would wait to put my snows on until after I got back as you will wear them down quicker in the southern states. Snow tires work best at 7C or less. Since 39.5% of your drive there and back is done in Georgia and Florida (20 hrs) plus driving around Orlando it would be in your best interest to run good all seasons (decent tread depth of course). Usually early Dec road conditions in Tennessee and Kentucky tend to be ok as well. The main worry zones would be 401 West (Kitchener to Windsor), Michigan and Ohio. The issue with running snow tires in temps above 7C is increased tread wear as well as control issues. Just as snow tires can give a driver better control in slippery conditions they also under perform in dry warmer conditions. Of course keep an eye on weather patterns in the states before you go. My 2 cents...go I75...get Dave Hunter's book (I think it's still around)...like dancin Disney style said, take a cooler (the plug-in style is great)...and you can use it as a fridge at WDW (make sure you have an adapter). But just be careful what you have in it when you cross the border. Check the US/Canada border website. We usually stocked up with fruit once we got over the border.

I have to pop in and second the rec of ALONG I-75 every time it comes up. It's almost like I signed a contract with Dave himself to do this. But that book is indispensable. Everything from speed trap tips to navigational tips to many, many tested suggestions on food, lodging and entertainment along or near the route. Get the latest edition (he updates every two years, and there are substantial changes each update).

Hey Rob I can never 'leave' here, lol. I'm starting to get a little more active now that we have a trip coming up soon.
Thanks for the tips on snow tires! Just an anecdote about snow tires. On our last trip driving back from WDW on I75 (in the month of February),as we were on our way up the 'mountains' in Tennessee, it started to rain. By the time we reached the top, it started to snow. As we were coming down the other side, the road had a few inches of snow....on top of an ice base!! We drove VERY slow and passed all the cars that were swerving all over the road. Took a while of white-knuckle driving, but we arrived safe at the bottom (many others didn't). I'm positive that if we didn't have our snow tires on, we would have been in big trouble!! BTW, the forecast that day was only for rain...so you never know.

We live in Kingston and are considering driving for the first time next year. We go late August so snow isn't a factor. It looks like I75 would be 2 hrs longer for us so I81 to I95 is what we are thinking. Any opinions/ tips would be great!
