Respect is earned. At work, in sports, in entertainment, in pretty much every aspect of life, this little axiom holds true, if you want respect you need to earn it. At Disney I think this applies as well. There are so many rides at Disney, yet very few have earned the amount of respect that Peter Pan's Flight has.
First introduced in Disneyland in 1955, and then in Disney World in 1971, this family favorite has been faithfully entertaining countless guests for over 50 years that is worthy of respect. In a time when so many rides are being changed or updated to include modern features and technology, PPF still manages to wow us with it's old school charm that is worthy of respect. There are only a handful of rides in all of the Magic Kingdom that use a fast pass system to deal with the long lines they generate Peter Pan's Flight is one of those rides that is worthy of respect. The truth is that there are a lot of reasons why Peter Pan's Flight is worthy of our respect, and that is why it is still one of the most popular rides in all of Disney.
Peter Pan's flight is a fast, continuous loading attraction that allows 2 or 3 guests to sit together during it's roughly 2 1/2 minute journey. The theme of course is based on Disney's classic Peter Pan. Your cart is actually a flying ship which you ride through some of the famous scenes of the movie. From the nursery, to Big Ben, to Mermaid lagoon, to Captain Hook's pirate ship, so many of the scenes from the movie are fantastically brought to life in this amazing little ride. There is really nothing high-tech about it, but that just adds to it's charm. Disney wanted a fun, family style ride that would immerse the guest directly into the story, and what they produced does just that. As adults we tend to look at things more realistically, so we might miss some of the magic, but for a child, this ride truly is a magical experience. For decades children have been whisked away on this flying ship, and taken on this wonderful expedition. This ride turns every child's dream of flying into a reality.
I think this is one of the rides that best exemplifies what Walt Disney had in mind when he created his parks. This is a fantastic, family adventure that transports us to a place that few others can, and for that reason, I say again that this ride deserves all the respect that it is given. I look forward to our next Disney vacation so I can once again magically fly over London and Neverland on this classic ride.
