When I made my reservation back in November for a pop up site with a pet, I was told it would be $5 more per day for my pet. No problem, he is just a 4 legged member of our family. When I called today to check what loop I had"requested" I was told that I couldn't have a pet in a pop up/ tent loop. Problem since we leave in a week. After talking to a guest service rep. I was able to get a pet loop. Great feeling pixie dust, but then she said but you can't leave the pet alone in a pop-up. Pixie dust evaporated, I can't find any place on site that says that pets aren't allowed in pop-ups? I won't go into detail that my mini-golden doodle is a sweet-heart. So my question to you is have you ever heard of this rule and if so where is it stated? I wouldn't be upset if they had told me this back in November. Thanks for letting me rant and rave I am an avid stalker of disboards:)

Pets are only allowed alone all day in a *hard sided* camper. I'm sure it's for the safety of pet and and other pets/humans around.

Your pet may be a gently sweetheart, but the rule has to be made for everyone, as they do not know individual pets. If motivated enough, especially a larger dog can break out of canvas if they decide to be aggressive, and maybe see/hear an animal or human they'd like to bite/terrorize ;) Disney can't have the responsibility of that possibility.

There is a very nice pet *daycare/night* facility very close to FW. You could board your pet there, and he would be very well cared for.

My problem is that I can't find this anywhere on the Disney site and why would they make a reservation for me knowing that I had a pop up and was bringing my pet. Just a little confused...

Sometimes CM's can give different answers to questions (unfortunately), but you can put your pet in a crate/container during the day if your are in a soft sided RV, they just can't be left loose when you're not there. They also must be on a leash (no more than 6 ft. I think) when you are there, and have them out.

By the way, their policy on pets is on their web site.

Thank you for your input. I would actually drag my dog down there because my kids love him and so do I. They were looking forward to walking him around the campground, on a leash. We are not going into the parks so he wouldn't be alone. Thanks again for the advice.

Someone is going to be at the pop up 24 hours a day and not leave FW at all while you are there? Just to be on the safe side, I would take a crate for your dog, so you would not be tied down to the site all day every day of your trip. :goodvibes Have a great trip!

take care not to leave pup at the nearby doggy daycare, from what i've read here on the Camping thread.

You're talking about the "Best Friends Pet Care" near FW? I haven't heard anything but praise from people that have used them :confused3

ditto,

I even went and did a tour just in case I ever needed their services. I wouldn't hesitate to leave my pup there.

I would agree with avoiding "Best Friends". They are lax on their bortadella requirements and they give very little attention to the dogs. Last time we left our dogs there for day care they both ended up with coughs even though they get annual vaccines. We don'e frequently board our dogs, but our vet requires it as a routine vaccine in case of overnight stays for any medical treatment. When I was checking out I heard one of the pet guardians talking to another guest about vaccines and she stated that since that dog had not had bortadella they would need approval to give it to him there. That is of no use if the dog is already infected and kennel cough spreads like wildfire through a kennel.

After a long conversation with a guest services rep and 3 different conversations with people at Fort Wilderness I will say that the pet rules are NOT clear.
I even had a guest service rep admit that the site only says when you make reservations online to say if you need a pet loop. That being said I can't even put my 4 legged baby in a crate in my pop up. Thank goodness for parents who are going to dog sit for me. Just makes me sad as my kids were so excited and we love Fort Wilderness. I do have to say that the Customer Service Rep did everything she could to find the right answer. I will follow the rules because I have young kids who follow my example. Thanks for all the advice!

They really should make a rule, make it public, let all CMs know and stick to it. This wishy washy stuff can put a damper on people's (your) vacation. If/when you get a survey be sure to let them know.

I can understand people's frustration if their dog got kennel cough while being in the kennel. The bordatella vaccine is very effective in preventing " some" types of kennel cough. Because kennel cough is an air borne virus and there are multiple strains it is hard to say that the vaccine will stop all outbreaks. There is anecdotal evidence that some pets do show active signs of the illness after having the inoculation. I am sure that the staff at the Disney kennel makes every effort to control and combat the spread of illness. Everyone must be aware that if you have a large group of dogs together,( and it goes for children too) there may be germs that are spread that the individual animal does not have immunity to. I feel very comfortable about boarding my pet at the Disney Kennel. Day boarding would be a very good option for those staying in a tent. I may use that option when we stay in the RV if we plan a long day in the parks.

I don't own a dog, but if a dog is just 'day boarding' while the owners are staying at Fort Wilderness in a tent, where would the dog stay at night? Are dogs allowed in tents at Fort Wilderness over night? Or by 'day boarding' do you mean a 24 hr 'day'?

We were told that dogs were not alllowed in popups or tents at all in FW. I can absolutely understand.

Pets are not allowed in a pop up or tent. It is not stated anywhere on the Disney site. It is a apparently a guarded secret among Disney reps. Had I been told this back in November when I made the initial reservation in November it wouldn't have been a big deal. I wonder what Disney would have done had we showed up in a week with our dog?

1) Having worked at FW, I can tell you, no pets in pop-up/tent.
2) The true reason is the usual lacking of air conditioning.
3) Yes, some CM's say safety of others.
4) But, the need for A/C is the prime mover.
5) They have had pets die in tents/pop ups from the Florida heat.
6) Then, the argument as to who was at fault begins.
7) Overall, bad situation.

NOTE1 If you can show air conditioning full-time in your pop-up,
the CM at the gate will *usually* allow you in. At least, most of
us did.

NOTE2: As for "not visiting parks and being in the tent 24/7", how
can a CM know this s going to be true. Besides. who stays in a tent
or room 24/7 on vacation?

Even though you do not plan to visit the parks, your dog would not be allowed to lots of areas at the Fort. Please someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe dogs are not allowed at the pool, the beach, the area around the Hoop-Do-Do/Trails End Restaurant, playground areas etc. Yes there is a very nice dog trail and a dog park available, and you can walk the dog around the pet loop areas, but I would think for you to stay with your dog the whole time you are at the Fort would take away time being spent at some of the best things the Fort has to offer.

We are bringing our dog down and I have checked into the Best Friends kennel on the Disney grounds. I initially had much trouble getting to speak with a human, had left lots of messages and not gotten a callback, but I eventually went to their Facebook page and left a message. Within 1 hour they called me at my house, explained all their options, and also told us that if we leave our dog there for less than 6 hrs. daily it would have only been apr. $19, so I made her reservations for multiple daycare visits. This is a win-win situation for us. Maybe you could check it out?:thumbsup2
