Persistant Infection in Leg

They also state that appointments are usually given 3 to 4 weeks from the time that they get the paperwork.

WHat?????

I have never heard of this.

In the ID business 4 weeks is an eternity. Folks don't go to an ID specialist becausethey have simple infections. A serious infection could lead to sepsis, septic shock and death.

I really don't get it. I have never heard of an ID consult for an accute problem that was meant for anything but ASAP.

If you are being jerked around, might I suggest talking to your employer, and having him do a little polite nudge. I know I doctor I worked with showed me tis courtesy when my mom was being jerked around. Helped alot, too!

Personally, if it were me & couldn't get in to see them, I'd just head straight to ER

I agree with the above. I'd be marching straight into the ER if I was told it was going to be 3 or 4 more weeks before I could be seen.

When you got discharged from the ER, did they give you paperwork to follow up with your Dr., but to come back if your symptoms didn't get better?

OK here is what I think:

GO STRAIGHT TO THE ER, YOU WILL GET ADMITTED AND SEE ID TOMORROW!!!!!!! The consult will be called in when you get to the floor, you are really concerning me, I see MRSA all the time and it is SO SCAREY. I hope you do what is right for you

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes:: I agree with the PP.

If your employer thinks it's a bone infection I'm not sure why you're trying to remain calm and wait it out. It is well past the freak right the heck on out stage and it's getting into the hysterical fit throwing stage. Head on in to the ER and get this handled sooner rather than later.

3-4 weeks to see an Infectious Disease doctor? That makes absolutely no sense.

Were you referred to an ID doctor when you were discharged? My daughter was in the hospital for a staph infection and she had to follow up with an ID doctor 3 days after she was released.

I don't understand why you're not going to the ER?

The ER right now is really not an option. Gabby is in Michigan. I have 3 Chihuahuas that would be without care until late Thursday night.......not acceptable. I am afebrile and dealing with this as best I can for now. As long as it's not getting worse, I am trying to remain calm. While it sucks, it's not more than I can handle for now. Maggie

I won't tell you what to do, you are an adult and you have the right to make your own decisions. That said.......If it were me?

Kennel. Visa Card. ER. Visa Card. TOMORROW MORNING.

While it sucks, it's not more than I can handle for now.

How do you know that?

You don't have a co-worker or anybody that could come by tomorrow to feed the dogs and take them out to go the bathroom?

Maggie,
Listen very carefully...if they are talking bone infection, then you can NOT wait for ID. You are litterally one step away from losing the leg entirely. You are way past a regular infection. You WILL lose this leg..just like me.

Believe me when I say you need to kennel your dogs and go to an ER. If you refuse to go tonight you MUST MUST MUST have an ID appointment TOMORROW. Call your boss FIRST THING IN THE MORNING 8AM call on the private line if you know you're boss is there earlier.

I'm going to say it again bone infection is VERY close to losing a leg. Way way WAY worse than before. This is very VERY serious, more serious than you could possibly know. It will be PAINFUL and difficult rehab to lose the leg, not to mention emotionally difficult, you will miss more work than you think you have already missed trying to learn how to walk again. ..

Maggie, no one from your DIS family wants that for you. PLEASE GET HELP NOW, BY NOW I MEAN NOW..Ccan you call your boss at home and have her meet you at the ER? can she take your dogs while you go to the ER? There hasa to be someone that can help with your pets, but you won't be around for your pets if you don't do something RIGHT NOW.

Yes i'm being harsh and hopefully i'm scaring the who-ha out of you. I'm scared for you. Very scared.

I'm even more scared that your slipping back into not making a fuss. That is not going to benefit you at all. Stay strong, Stay tough. Fix this with the little time you have left. PLEASE

If things are as bad as you say they are....put a number of bowls down with water, some wet and dry pet food and go to the ER. The dogs can survive for a day. The dog poop can be picked up. Call a friend or neighbor, let them know how bad things are ask for help.

You can lose your leg or your life - we can only judge by what you have written and it sounds bad.

I just don't get the 3 weeks wait for an ID doctor. I just don't.

Unchecked bacteria can go into the bloodstream - you can quickly get septic and die.

Take care of yourself.

Good luck.

I agree completely. Dog poop can be picked up...a leg can't be re-attached.

I agree. I think I'd go to the hospital. Time can make a difference.

My DD had chicken pox when she was in 6th grade. One on her ankle got infected. She got a shot, but the infection continued to spread. My gut instinct said not to wait. We went to the ER and they admitted her. Turned out it was not responding to antibiotics. They cultured and it was strep. They kept trying meds and it wouldn't respond. We had lots of doctors on her case, and they were frightened that they couldn't turn it around. At one point they told us they were very afraid it had gone to the bone. They were afraid she would lose her leg or worse, but we finally got it turned around.

Trust me. This is nothing to fiddle around with. I'm not trying to be ugly. I understand caring about your pets. I wish you were here and I'd keep them for you. But you need to worry about your leg. Hours could make a difference. At least that's what they told me. Please go to the hospital.

i just finished reading the entire thread. :(
One of the docs that I work for looked at my leg today and feels that I might have a bone infection, because there is pain and focalized redness along my shin...it's constantly achy and screams with any sort of vibration or jolt. She wants me to see ID too beause she feels that my doctors office isn't being aggresive enough.
A DOCTOR thinks you may have a bone infection, knows the history of your illness and didn't send you to the ER?

Hell, why didn't your employer call and have you admitted some where? Please do not tell me they can't do that because they are pediatricians. BS, they could call another doctor and get you seen and have you admitted. Hell, they could probably get you in to see an ID tommorow with a few phone calls.

I just do not understand this thread at all. You are in the medical field, you are surrounded by health care professionals...and you can't seem to get treatment?

There is NO reason not to go to the ER. If you were having a heart attack, you would go and the dogs would survive.

Go to the ER, get the health care you need and then quit your job and get a new doctor because this is to the point of malpractice, if you are really being honest about what has been going on.

I don't get this either. Throw some food and water down and get going. I also don't get why your partner didn't drag you to the ER when she was home. I would have dragged my DH kicking and screaming if I had to.

Please stop with the excuses. Your life maybe in danger, then who will take care of the dogs?:confused3 Take the dogs to a kennel and then get to the ER. I hope it is not too late already to save your leg or your life.

I can only assume that my doc's office has called them and asked for me to be bumped up in priority. I will know more tomorrow. Maggie
After all that has happened, I wouldn't assume anything.

Just an excuse, put them in a kennel.

Personally, I'm starting to wonder if it's as bad as she says it is.
