People's dress in public - Warning a rant

I was at a school meeting last night with a whole bunch of other parents. One mom, seating two rows in front of me, had a young child with her. The toddler was very cute, but bored. Mid way through the meeting she began to cry. The mom got up to take her out of the room and then I (and everyone seating around me) got to see the top of mommy's thong. This woman was not particularly little, and she was pear shaped also. I don't like to see anyone's thong sticking up so far over the tops of the pants but I couldn't help but gaze in wonder at that particular booty and thong combo. :rolleyes1

But to the person who said there's no one who wants to look at that? There are plenty of men, FA's and Chubby Chasers alike who find that look desireable. It is a society who has been raised on "Thin is the only beauty" that belives that only someone who appears to be "perfect" and free of body fat is desireable.

You are so right, Ursala. Women are 100x harder on each other (and themselves) than men are.

I truly feel for you! Throughout high school I was a size 9 or 11 which at the time I of course, thought was fat. I would never have been able to manage on the styles that are out there now! I often think of this especially because I have a DD who is just naturally tiny. Seriously, at 9 almost 10, her wrist is smaller around than her 6 yo brothers. A lot smaller. She gets clothes from a girl at church who is quite a bit bigger than she is and a lot taller. Now, technically these clothes should not "fit" her for a couple more years as this girl is in like 9th grade. However, at the age they are supposed to fit and the WAY they are supposed to fit are sooooo not happening in my house, so she is wearing them now when they "fit" in a way that does not leave skin showing or is not skin tight. What is with that look??? Of course, there was a thread on here saying the 80s looks are coming back and while it means skin should be covered (though my sis was the queen of the little black teddy peaking through so maybe not) I am not sure that is a good look either!
I have an eight year old sister who is very tiny for her age and she will wear my smaller shirts and they look like they were meant to fit her. It is funny. She really looks up to me and wears these shirts every chance she gets..

coming off the monorail the other day was a HUMONGOUS(SP?) gal in a tube top. blubber everywhere. it was gross. :sad2:

You know, I don't think it is horribly difficult to find clothes to cover your gut!

I have a 14 y/o DD who is a freshman in high school and I have yet to see her go out with her stomach hanging out or her "muffin tops" showing. :teeth:

She shops at all the "young" stores like Aeropostale, American Eagle, Abercrombie, and Target. I was really pleased, this year, to see the stores coming out with the slim fit T-shirts and polos that went down to the hip and are meant to be layered. Many of the girls are wearing these and I find them to be nice and modest.

But that still doesn't stop many of the girls and women to continue to go for the "hoochie mama" look and show it all. Unfortunately, it seems like the ones who shouldn't be showing it are showing the most and, I can only conclude, that this is a "look" they are going for and there are certain types of men that are very attracted to this.

There is proper attire for every situation, and being proper in one does not assure it is well advised for another. I don't care how confident and sexy you feel (or actually are) underwear is not proper outer wear unless you are in a bar. It's called UNDERwear for a reason people!! If you wouldn't wear it to church it's not proper for business either. If you dress like a ho don't be suprised when people think you really are one.

I swear, young people today have no concept of how to dress on the job. Yes, that's generalizing, but I work with several people in their early-mid 20's, and continue to be astonished at what they wear to work.

A couple of months ago, I was introduced to our newest sales manager. She showed up in jeans, sneakers, and a top that exposed her belly button. Now she was young, and cute, and thin, and looked just fine - for a trip to Starbucks, not for a meeting with one of your regional managers and the owner of the company.

My old office used to keep the thermostat set at 60 degrees, as a trick to keep people from dressing too skimpily. I was the only woman under 40 who ever wore any kind of hosiery.

The last three jobs I've held, by bosses told me that my ability to dress professionally for the interview was a huge plus.

I would never allow my receptionist to wear anything that exposed her nipples. Dress however you want on your own time, when you are representing me and my company, I do get a say in how you look.

The style that gets me is the males with the droopy pants with their boxers hanging out of the top. They walk along pulling up their pants every 3 steps. That is just WAY too much work for fashion. :lmao:

And what kind of thongs are people wearing that leave panty lines? Believe me, you'd think I was commando. :smooth:

I hate seeing teenage boy butt. :crazy2:

My DS wears big droopy jeans, but he keeps them belted around his waist. He wears them like that because he has sensory issues and can't stand the feel of most materials against his skin (I'm like it to a lesser extent). He's been wearing loose clothes like that since he was little, but at least then he would wear sweats or the nylon track pants. I hate it now because he always looks like such a punk.

not everyone is a sz 6 and even those of us who are have flab...somewhere.

I'm a size six and have a little bit of a bubba on my belly, sometimes a bit more than others. I have a couple pair of "low-rise jeans", and I wear a longer shirt with them--something that will cover my flesh--although if I have to bend over and you catch a glimpse of my thong, get over it, if I had granny panties on you would have seen them too. I don't intentionally show off my underwear.

Here's a tip--Ralph Lauren makes a great mid-rise jean--VERY comfortable and VERY, VERY, VERY slimming--the most slimming pair of pants I've ever owned! I've had a couple of pairs for a couple of years now and they wear wonderfully. With those you can wear a shorter shirt (not crop-top) without worry of looking like a muffin top. Oh, and your thong won't show either. :rotfl: :thumbsup2

BTW--I don't see why so many of you have an obsession about thong underwear showing. I've seen lots of baggy granny panties hanging out of the backs of women's pants, and no one ever seems to complain about that. Personally I think that looks a lot worse...

And until you've tried a thong, don't knock them. They are a lot more comfortable than walking around with half of your cotton panties wedgied up your crack--it's a lot less fabric to be readjusting all the time (ie. no readjusting ever needed), and no panty lines. IMHO, many of them are uncomfortable. The trick is to find the right one for you. Once you do, you'll never look back.

Too true! I never thought I would but now I can't wear anything else. (Unless AF is in town) :rotfl2:

I didn't read all the replies, but this is an interesting thread. My DD13 just brought this up the other night. She loves to watch Survivor, but there is one woman on there that drives her crazy. It's Cerie (sp). Every time she sees her she says, "That girl really needs to change her shirt!" "That halter top is just so inappropriate!" "UGH!" :lmao:

I am not pleased that she is being a bit judgemental. However, it's nice to know that she won't wear anything like that anytime soon. :cloud9:

Yep, I agree. Cerie's girls look like they are about to pop out. Maybe it's because of the weight loss.

I'd like to see some of the boys try to run with those baggy pants on. You see some guys constantly pulling them up. How is that comfortable? I'd be afraid the boxers would come down with the pants and I would moon everyone.

Why not? If they feel comfortable wearing that cute "baby" t-shirt even with their "blubber" hanging out, who are you to pass judgement on them? :sad2:

Very true, No one has the right to tell someone how to dress, if the person is comfortable, then why bother?

You're not going to change their mind or anything.

I understand if the person is over weight and dressing like that but if a very thin girl is showing off her body because she got a nice body.. Whats the problem.

Just like the other lady said, if you got a problem with some one else's nice body, you must have a problem with yours.

How do you equate "blubber" with "nice body"? :confused3

Its fun to be naked...

and free.

of flab...

but there are few of us who are so... at least they feel comfy enough with themselves to dress how they want

I find that usually it is those who are not comfy with their own appearance who notice others appearances first
Funny, I happen to think that people who don't care about what they look like have no self-esteem. Isn't it funny how different people can have different perceptions of the same event???

I am a chubby, middle-aged woman. I'd love to be a skinny middle-aged woman with a killer bod, but that ain't happenin' right now. I have a nice DH and a good life, can "clean up" pretty well, even with my chubby body, consider myself a nice, decent person overall, and am quite happy with myself and my life. When I was 18 and had a killer bod, I still didn't walk around with my business hanging out, from any view.

I am glad they're comfortable in their skin. I am also pretty comfortable in mine. But that oesn't mean I want to see anyone's flab hanging out, just as I would assume they don't want to see mine.

Just because a certain "look" is in style, doesn't mean everyone should wear it.

ok, i ignore this everytime it comes up and yes, i have seen some people wear pants to tight for their body. i do not deny that that problem exists.

but please also keep in mind that there are some of us with stomach flab that shows just because it is stomach flab! it doesn't mean our pants are too tight and sorry but you are going to see it to a certain extent in anything i wear b/c it is there!!!

i have lost a significant amount of weight, but i still have about 30 pounds to go and i have found that this last 30 pounds is the hardest. unfortunately it seems to be manifesting itself mostly in my stomach.

sorry if people think my tummy is gross - i do too! BUT there is nothing i can do about it. you are going to see it through my clothes until i can lose it!
I think the OP is talking about hip huggers and belly shirts with the flab in between visible and hanging over the top of the pants.

I don't believe she is talking about having a flabby belly that is covered up with your shirt.

If she is, 75% of Americans won't be able to leave their house!!!!! ;) Including me!!!!!

Going with the cover your flab theory...

does that mean someone with imperfect teeth should never smile?

how about thinning hair..should they wear hats?

how about people with some wrinkles...should they wear veils to cover their faces??

thats all I am saying...

just don't look if you don't like it...

not everyone is a sz 6 and even those of us who are have flab...somewhere.

but that doesn't mean I won't don my swim suit at typhoon lagoon, nore do I need a granny skirt
I actually read on MSN the other day that less bathing suit makes you look thinner!!

I wish I could link it but I have to go teach...at a high school... :lmao:
You know, you're really stretching it here. :rolleyes2

i don't like the spillage over the pants either. wear a longer or bigger shirt :rotfl:

just because they make styles in bigger sizes, doesn't mean it's for everyone
i'd love to wear clothes from Ambercrombie but unfortunetly ........ :rolleyes1

Well, Ralph Loren is a little too expensive for me. :)
And I hate seeing any underwear hanging out of peoples pants. I don't care if it's a thong or so called "granny panties". They do make low rise undies now. That helps to prevent people from seeing what color undies you have on.

I've tried several thongs, and can't get comfy in them. Anything up my butt bothers me. So I've tried lots of styles of undies. And almost everything will go up the crack eventually.
