For some time now there have been shelters and vets helping outside the
worst hit areas, but Sunday marked the first day for vets to be allowed
by the authorities to enter New Orleans. These first vets in are
specially trained vets working with the ASPCA, and their mission is
multi-fold since they also need to tackle potential zoonotic threats to
human health
. For instance, they will be collecting and giving
appropriate rabies vacs to the domestic animals found
.

So those rescue workers dealing with animals could possibly SAVE HUMAN LIVES! I'm not asking anyone to give to animal disaster relief if you don't choose to. I'm just trying to point out the benefits of it to those who think animals should be left to rot and ALL rescue efforts and donations should ONLY be centered on humans.

Sounds to me like people have been flaming you. You've been giving out information that benefit both people and animals. I thank you for that. You've worked hard at both , keep up it up!

I read on a resident's blog that there are huge numbers of stray dogs in the dry areas. I would imagine that there are plenty of cats too but they're probably more hidden.

I would think that huge numbers of animals roaming freely would be a health concern for both the animals and the people just as you point out. I say get them all out of there!

I also started a post that included the information from petfinder.org, with the link to the message forum, and a link to the list of organizations (for me the moving one was www.Noahswish.org)

I bumped it up twice, shamelessly, but no one does seem to care or seem to understand.

I challenge anyone that feels this way to watch Oprah today, see Nate Berkus talking to a man and his 24 yr old son, and pet for 14 yers. The son refused to get on the bus he's been with his dog, and the father tried to explain, but he would stay with his son... and Nate just broke down, he hugged the son, and did make a promise, and later they did show the boy and his dog reunited.

I say a dog in a rubbermaid container, and someone humanely giving him water, feeling so desperate...

I'm grateful for these organized efforts... I do know you have to be cautious in giving money, so many that can take advantage of the situation, and I have heard caution about a couple of well known (petsmart in particular) collecting money, but using some of the funds for "adminstrative" costs... hopefully that will change...

I never heard of Noah's wish until i read your thread about animal rescue.
I made a donation to their organization and have told everyone i know, including my dog training club.

At first I was only going to donate to animal causes because I knew that funds like the Red Cross will always get donations...but the animal funds have to work harder.

But, when the situation just continued to get worse & worse, I felt I needed to donate to the Red Cross also.

Same amount - both funds.

Sorry, I like animals better than people most days. What can I say.

I absolutely believe human lives are more important, but my dog is so important in our lives, and I can't imagine leaving her behind, so I support 100% what the animal groups are doing, regardless of whether it helps the humans. Besides, it does help the humans to have their pets either with them or safe somewhere, so either way they benefit! I'm so grateful for all your posts letting people know of all the organizations out there - I'd heard of Noah's Wish but didn't know a lot about them till I read your posts, so keep up the good work - and don't let anyone tell you the animals don't matter!

I am donating to the Red Cross but I have to admit that I may donate more to the animal cause funds because I'm afraid that not as many people will. I have to agree with you about liking animals better than people most days, animals are more loyal. All the more reason they need to be saved.

Thank you ducklite for pointing out that this is helping the humans too. Now maybe more people will be for the resue of the pets. Although I think they should be saved regardless.

I will donate to both. My dog would rescue me anyway he could if I needed it.

Aside from the health risk of not helping animals there is the emotional benifit helping them will give to those that had to leave beloved pets behind. I hope we can reunite a lot of these pets with their families. What a huge ray of sunshine that would be for some poor family that has lost everything.

Several abandoned pets that were rescued were sent here to Atlanta today with all the overcrowding in Louisiana and Texas. They are expecting a lot more to come our way. Apparently a lot of these were dropped off or abandoned right before Katrina during evacuations.

Thanks Anne

I can't believe that there are some real animal haters here who think people should perish for wanting to save their pets. Sad! The ASPCA and Noahswish were both on tv tonight. What great and caring organizations. Thanks for promoting them.

The noahwish.org site is down. Says it's been suspended!

It's back up, they probably exceeded allocated bandwisth with their web hosting company.

Veterinarianss cannot just fan out over the countryside treating animals. FEMA could seize their supplies and equipment and even conscript them to divert to "more urgent" needs such as treating people. Only with permission should they go into a disaster area and once inside they may be given specific duties such as rabies prevention.

Start of a tabloid article:
"If you think that being poor and having to eat dog food is bad enough, some elderly are relying on veterinarians for their medical care!"

My sister is a vet and spends time taking care of my grandmother including administering some medical care.

I don't know of any animal haters, and I haven't seen that here. As for thinking people should perish for wanting to save their pets, no of course not. But anyone that receives an offer of help to leave, and refuses, should be given some food and water and told that they're on their own. Resources shouldn't be used for people that refuse to remove themselves from a dangerous situation while there are still people that need help.

Now I am not an animal lover, not a hater..kinda ambivilent about them. BUT I would never ever say leave the animals to die. I know how much people love their pets and as much as a human life has meaning, so do animal's. They provide so much to so many...mainly from what I see...unconditional love! I have donated to both types of funds for this disaster.

You are really off the mark. Veterinarians are not licensed to treat people. The drugs they ahve are not approved for use in people--that's why the label states "For verterinarian use only". Your cousin treats your aunt as a family caregiver, not as a doctor. Otherwise she is in risk of losing her license.

Every vet and rescuer working with the five major animal orgs in the affected areas right now is there with the permission of the authorities in charge.

And if FEMA wants to start seizing pole snares, crates, and dog chow to feed people, I think you're going to see heads roll for more than one reason.

Great post again Anne! WHY can't people see that they're comparing apples and oranges?

I wish those who don't care as much as we do about the animals would stop posting on the pet threads. Lets stay positive. We care about the animals and these posts are informative and make me feel like maybe something is happening for the pets of NO/Miss.
This has been so heartbreaking on so many levels, but the pet suffering just absolutely breaks my heart to pieces.

Anne...you have been inspirational in your posts/info about donations for those of us who didn't know where to send help for the animals.

Thank you.
