I assume I'm in the majority when I say I love shrimp ... but few things are more gross than the "peel and eat shrimp" that are so common at Dis buffets like Cape May Cafe and Trails End.
I assume it's a cost issue, like everything is in life, but c'mon...this is Walt Disney World...peel and clean the damn shrimp, to paraphrase Pete. :mad:
Thoughts?

I hate it at buffets. I'm allergic and when people start peeling, the shrimp "juice" starts flying. ACK! And then shrimpy fingers touch everything, such as the serving spoons. :scared1: If it's a small part of a huge buffet, it's not a big deal. If it's a seafood buffet, I just don't go, since that would be tempting fate. If a table of people next to me sits down with a HUGE plate of shrimp, we ask to be moved.

I would personally prefer peel and eat. I live on the coast and this is the ONLY way our local restaurants serve boiled shrimp. Mabye it is a southern thing, but I have only every seen boiled shrimp severd peeled in a shrimp cocktail. Leaving the shell on keeps them from drying out and becoming tough. I just don't see how it would be possible to serve them boiled and prepeeled. They would not be worth eating by time they sat around peeled waiting to be served.

It's not so much the shell that makes it nasty...it's the VEIN :sick:

Peeling them isn't going to do anything for that. They would have to be butterflyed and deveined. Do you guys actually pull that out?? You do realize that they are purged prior to cooking to get all the yuck out?? I don't think I know anyone around here who does that unless the shrimp are just huge. We only devein the 5 to a pound ones that we grill.

Did anybody bring a pooper scooper?
Why do you always have to de-turd these things?;)

Haaa, yes I know peeling them will not clean them out. Yes, peeled and butterflied is how "we" eat shrimp cocktail. YUMMM :goodvibes

It's really not a turd. Just the cleaned out digestive tract. I doesn't effect the taste at all and it is not necessary to remove it, except if it bothers you asthetically.

Wow, that's a lot of work. We just get the shell off and down they go, but never with cocktail sauce. We use enough crab boil and cayanne that you don't need it anyway!!

::yes::

Not my fave way of eatting shrimp, I always get a few and then they taste so bland like that, I prefer mine grilled! Like I said I always get a few tho, most times they turn out to be a dissapointemnt tho..
Im on the coast in the south and I HATE them boiled in anything! We have beaufort stew around here or sometimes its called lowcountry boil, it has potatos, sausage, small ears of corn and shrimp and most times its bland! Ive had it a few times where they put plenty of seasoning in it like Old Bay and jalepeno and I enjoyed it much more but still all those flavors really dont mix..

WHAT AM I READING HERE?

People, people, people.

There is no other way to eat shrimp! You guys wouldn't last five minutes on the Gulf Coast! :goodvibes

Seriously, that's how you eat boiled shrimp in South LA, and the MS and AL Gulf Coast. :thumbsup2

I guess we don't have to discuss sucking the heads when you eat crawfish! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

NEEDS MORE CYANNE!!! You want your lips to burn when you eat them!!!! Seriously, zatarann's crab boil (liquid not the bags) and cyanne is the only way to go. The jalepeno adds too much of a venigar wang. YUCK!!!

The people that's preparing your "low country boil" must not be from SC. I've never had any that's bland. SC/GA Shrimp are to die for, best in the country. Shrimp season starts next month and I can't wait.

And leave the vein, that's just flavor.

The problem with that buffet/WDW shrimp is that it is imported from Asia.

And they don't soak em enough

First I have to say LOL to your quote! But I love shrimp and they can be a bit messy to eat it is an art to eating them just like crab legs, But to be honest from a cook caterer chef whatever people want to call me, It is a couple of reasons why they are not peeled and why they are not cleaned.

#1. They are not cleaned nor peel to keep LESS people from eating them
Which if less people are eating them keeps the shrimp demand down and
This saves money

#2. Shrimp cooked in the shell are more flavorful and it keeps the shrimp from
Shrinking. but still can be clean I always clean shrimp for clients, it is a
Tedious task but it is worth it for the patron.:)

#3. They are not cleaned :stir::stir:because that would take time and time time is money

#4. Just imagine if all the boiled shrimp on the Disney Buffets were prepared differently they of course would be cleaned and prepared,like say some were fried, some were scampied some were barbecued the demand for the shrimp would explode like pixiedust:pixiedustpixiedust::"WISHES" I mean the demand would skyrocket,

So I guarantee you they wont peel them or clean them they will leave it up to those that really want to eat them bad enough and I am Disney’s worst nightmare :scared1:cause at Ohana I peel em and clean em at about 10 shrimp to the
minute :rotfl::rotfl:

And they don't soak em enough

Lol, When I make my Low Country Boil I clean the shrimp and take the vein out, I just cant eat them, and they need to boil them with some cajun seasoning and lemon on them! is that what you mean when you say they dont soak enough?
