Hi. I read that if you buy a DVC contract directly from Disney you can use a credit card to pay for it (unlike a resale). Has anyone ever used anything other than Visa/Mastercard? I am interested in using an American Express card (with a 1.5% cash back bonus) for an initial contract with SSR. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just call Amex ahead of time & let them know what you are planning to do in detail.
DH did this. Gets us lots of airfare! We do pay off the balance each month. I know of another DVCer who did this recently, also.

Our initial purchase was resale so we did not get to use our credit card. The 1st add-on and most recently 2nd add-on was and will be put on a credit card to get air miles. We pay off the charge when we get the bill. I would never do this if I could not pay it off in full. Easy way to get miles.

I am not sure about using AMEX, but I would think Disney would accept it. Call member accounting or your guide in the morning to find out for sure.

I bought a car on my AmEx once. The salesman was very surprised and made a big deal about it, in a positive way. Thought I was a big spender. I had moved, just didn't have a bank account set up yet and was new on my job (new location, same employer). I needed a car and my husband and son were still at our old home with the car.

We did use a credit card to get one of our 100 point add-ons a few years back. But I think it was a VISA.

I've used Amex for 8 add-ons through Disney. The last time I did this was in January 2002. In December 2004, I used the same Amex card to pay for our 2005 annual dues. I expect they continue to accept Amex for any transaction you need to complete.

I used my Disney Visa to pay for my 450 points. I took out an equity loan, but used my cc. Since my cc limit was only 15K, I had to do it for 3 separate purchases. I had to call my guide and she took 10K off of my cc, when it showed-up on my cc I made the payment electronically. Then when it cleared I called my guide again and she did the same thing (2 more times). It was alot of work, but it didn't seem to be a problem for the folks at DVC. After all was done, I had 330 reward points and plan to use them this week to pay for my room at Pop Century, so my 10 night loding at Pop Century will be free!

Only if you pay them in one lump sum in January. If you want to pay monthly, the only option is a direct debit to your checking account.

Best wishes-

You can, but only if you pay the entire year in January.

You cannot use a CC for the monthly installments.

I just paid my annual dues also with my disney visa. I'm new, so I had a prorated amount. I plan to do this in January again too when my yearly amount is due.

Just remember to talk to Amex before you charge them, especially if you are hoping to get that 1.5% cash back. I know there are some exclusions on what is eligible for that cash back and I think the real estate property is one of them. Let me know what they say so that I can do the same.

I just used my Am Ex to make our initial deposit, and was told that I can use it to pay off the balance when I close! Anything for more frequent flyer miles!! :earboy2:

Now if only you could use your Amex to purchase traveler's checks and then use them to pay off your Amex . . . :rolleyes1

I got one of the 0% interest for 14 month promo cards that also gave 1% cash back (Visa). I charged a 120 point add-on, got 1% back and won't pay interest on it until December 2006 (assuming I don't get it paid off by then).

We had the money to pay for it but used the credit card to get airline miles then paid the balance when the statement came. The purchase got us ONE free first class ticket to Orlando

How about the credit card backed convenience checks? They are supposed to be able to be used just like a regular check. I have some with 3.9% fixed rate.

I used my new-at-the-time Hilton HHonors Amex card to buy our first 155 points back in 2002. I think that was the first transaction I used the card for! No problem. This was before the Disney Visa.

I am sure you probably know this, but........Just so you aren't possibly disappointed, make sure your card doesn't have a maximum to how much "reward" you can get per statement time period (or just make sure you are making a purchase that doesn't put you over). I hate for people not to get every "reward" they are expecting because it takes the fun out of the transaction. Fine print can be so annoying.
