Our district will allow it, we did it in 09. My daughter had to keep a journal, do all her class work, pick something to research and write a report about, and do a presentation for the class - 3rd grade. She chose roller coasters. It was fun. To the OP, I talked to the teacher first, and together the teacher and I talked to the principal, and our absences were excused. I talked to them early though - as soon as I could.
They would still let me do it, but now that she is in Jr High I just can't do it. She missed three days early for her grandfathers funeral and she struggled for the rest of the nine weeks in honors math, and ended up with a high B average - which really disappointed her. So I feel like now we are limited to school breaks, but thats ok.
Honestly, I am amazed by the workload here. Coming from the UK I have a different perspective on it. We do not test, test, test constantly - we review. We do not cram - longer periods are spent on each section. We don't have a credit system either. And yet our kids do just fine
