Parley....Will That Get Me On The Ship Any Faster part 2

As of right now (Central Daylight Savings Time), we have 125.5 hours left until the sail-away party on top deck (or roughly 7,533 minutes). I only have 104 hours left until my flight leaves and my vacation officially begins Friday evening (6,243 minutes). I only have about 32 hours of work left, and I'm hoping that roughly 8 of those will be productive!

I'm not excited or anything!

Have you been talking to my DH. He keeps texting me the hours and minutes until we leave.:rotfl:

According to guy code, I'm not allowed to divulge information about our secret communications! Sorry!

I have a quick question for anyone interested in the stargazing meet. Will most of you have some sort of access to the DISboards while on the cruise (e.g. iPhone, iPod, smartphone, on-board computers, etc.)? I'm still in constant contact with the group specialist who is trying to work out the best location on the ship for the stargazing presentation. Unfortunately, she says that it is common for the ship to wait until the very last minute to get back to her with some planning details.

We are waiting on the ship to provide their recommendation for the best spot(s) on the ship for stargazing and also if they will be willing to turn off the lights for us. I may not get final confirmation on a meet-up location until right before we leave. I will do my best to get the word out as soon as possible, but if you will be able to check the boards while on-board, that would be great.

The group specialist informed me that there is no Deck 11 on the Disney Magic (Deck 10 is as high as it goes). So, we will need to pick a different spot. Like I said, the ship is supposed to provide a recommended location. I asked about reserving the sports deck for our group, which is possible. But what I didn't realize until she pointed it out is that the entire sports deck is covered with netting to prevent basketballs and such from going overboard. So that will not work well for stargazing. I also asked about the secret Deck 7 aft, but she said that only accommodates a few people and is closed after 7pm anyway, also we would only have a view of the sky directly behind the boat.

I am going to study the deck plans some more and review photos of the Disney magic to get a sense of where would be a good spot. Hopefully, the crew gets back with a recommendation soon!

I am always displeased with the speed of the connection, but I know I'll at a minumum purchase the $50 package of internet access, so I can check it.

On a side note, when I mentioned the stargazing to a friend of mine who is into telescope-type thingies he asked if we were planning on trying to see Jupiter. Is it going to be visible that week?
He also mentioned that there is no way for a ship to get dark enough to do effective stargazing... But I'm confident that you know of a way.
Looking:thumbsup2 forward to it!

While your friend is right that ships are very, VERY brightly lit at night, at least it is only localized light pollution. Unlike most major metropolitan areas where the light pollution surrounds you for miles around, the ship's lights only affect its immediate vicinity. As long as we can find an area on the ship where we can block the light from one or two directions, we will be able to see plenty of the wonders of the night sky. And if DCL is, in fact, kind enough to accommodate my request to dim or extinguish the ship lighting in the immediate area of our event, that will make it all the more enjoyable.

Yes, yes, yes! Jupiter will be VERY visible for our stargazing event and nearly directly overhead. On a moonless, clear night here in the light-polluted Chicago suburbs a couple weeks ago, I was even able to make out its Galilean moons with the naked eye! Out in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, it should be even darker, and therefore easier to see details. And if you bring along a pair of binoculars or borrow someone else's, you should definitely be quite surprised with what you'll be able to see.

Even if the ship does not accommodate my request to dim some lights, we will still have darker skies than many people will have ever seen, especially if they are from major metro areas. Actually, the stars couldn't have been more in our favor. The night of the stargazing meet is the official New Moon for the current lunar cycle. Not only that, but the New Moon will have already set before sunset anyway. So, we'd be good even if it wasn't the New Moon!

I totally didn't even think about DCL charging for WiFi or internet access while on-board the ship. I've gotten so used to staying at slightly less-expensive hotel chains lately that just include internet and WiFi at no additional fee. I forgot that the big-name hospitality institutions are still trying to turn a profit with that. Seriously, if all the piddly hotel chains can offer it for free, you'd think for sure the superstars of the hotel world should be able to, as well.

I just wanted to say HAVE A GREAT CRUISE EVERYONE!!!!!!! I will wave while out to sea and know you all are out there somewhere too!
I wish we were all together for this one.:lovestruc

I hope you have a fabulous time on the Dream - I hear you have a really nice roommate. When are you coming down? Will we see you at Epcot on Friday?

i have zero days of work left (i'm retired) but Robin works till wednesday. (poor girl. :cutie:her husband makes her work while he stays home and watches soaps on tv and eats bon bons all day.););):cool1:

Unfortunately we will not have access to any of these devices. Last cruise we did and Dh might as well have stayed at work. They called constantly with one problem or another. So this trip NO Go.

Would there be a Bulletin Boards somewhere with daily activities that you could put it on. Or see if it can be announced at some point during the day.

Good news. DD just called. She just picked up the maple fudge. Still warm. So we are all set for the meet and greet. Only problem it was too warm to cut. Anyone bringing along a knife or can I get one there?

Unfortunately, piddly hotel chains are able to offer free internet access because WiFi access is cheap on land. In order to provide internet access at sea, they need to use a satellite system (or have really long cables :lmao:), which is very expensive and not as fast and dependable as the internet offered on land (of course, it probably isn't as expensive as they actually charge for it, but they have a captive audience) Some cruise lines offer free or reduced priced internet to frequent cruisers but I don't believe any cruise line currently offers free internet to regular cruisers.

If you see someone following you around it will probably be my Dad :lmao:

Hey that's my husband's plan!

Since we are new disers and no one knows us :confused3:confused3one way to find us at the port. We have early boarding and we usually bring our dvd player to catch up on shows but this cruise in honor of our new dis friends :grouphug:we are going to bring Young Frankenstein.:rotfl2: It's on the dresser ready to go!:cool1:

Okay, since this will be my first time on a Disney ship, I will need to rely on those of you with prior DCL experience. Is there any sort of community bulletin board where I would be able to post a change in plans, if needed? I'm actually hoping it won't be necessary. If I don't get an answer from DCL about a recommended location within the next day or so, I will just pick a spot on the ship for all of us to meet. By that time, I will already have had four nights to scour the decks in search of the ideal stargazing location. We can just meet in one spot and then caravan over to the actual stargazing site.

I'm just really hoping they get back to me soon with a suggestion, especially if they are going to turn the lights of for us. If not, then I will post a default meeting spot by tomorrow evening.

We are packed...and ready to go. It's torture today...as our flight isn't until 6 am tomorrow!! *ugh*

I guess I should clean up around the house?? My mind tells me it's on vacation already, so my body is saying...'oh no way am I scubbing a bathtub right now!':rotfl:

hmmm...what to do on this last day home....what to do....

Did I mention we leave...TOMORROW?!? ;)

Safe journey. We'll be there on Wednesday:yay::yay::yay:

Lori...I know you're gonna have a fab time with Paige. I'll send a hug with her when we meet on Friday.

Lots of you folks have us at a disadvantage in you've seen pics of us and know what we look like (and can easily avoid us););)

So if anyone sees us all week, please say Hi!..i'm terrible with names so i'll probably forget a lot during the dismeet on sailaway day.:wizard:

Once met, Mike....never fogotten :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:hug:

I just got word that Mass is on for Sunday at 9 AM. The location has been changed. Instead of the Buena Vista theater it will be in Rockin' Bar D. The BVT was unavailable. Believe it or not, I have said Mass in a ship's lounge before. It should be in the Navigator the night before.
