Parents Who Drink Alcohol While Taking Their Kids Trick or Treating...

Nope, I am perfect. Give me a break. I am just saying I don't think it necessary for a bunch of adults to be walking down the street ILLEGALLY drinking alcohol when they should be watching their children.

Since you are so caught up on the illegality of the situation, speeding is illegal too. Frankly, speeding is MUCH more dangerous than walking down the street with a beer in your hand.

I don't think it's right to hide alcohol from children.
See, that's typical of a message board. Someone says, "I don't think you should drink while you're chaperoning kids during trick-or-treating", and someone who disagrees automatically turns that into the most extreme opposite possible: "You think alcohol should be hidden from children!"

There's an awful lot of space in between walking down a public road on a kids' holiday and pretending that alcohol doesn't exist.

the big difference is that epcot isn't on a potentially busy street, on a very car accident prone night of the year.

apples and oranges. :confused3

well not here it isn;t, where we live it is essentially a large around the world. unless you live in this neighborhood or turn in by mistake...NO traffic.

I have to join the "trick-or-treating and alcohol don't mix" group. Drinking while chaperoning children walking down city streets in the dark on an evening known for mischief seems like a foolish combination.

Where on earth do you trick-or-treat?

Lucky for us, our streets are well lit and have sidewalks. Drivers inch along because people are crossing back and forth, and the only mischief we meet is the occasional over enthusiastic dad trying to scare the kids.

But if you read the posts they were saying that they don't think you should drink while "supervising" children, thus don't drink around children at all. There have been several posts that say this on this thread.

so you can't drink AND watch your children?

It is illegal... yes, that bothers me... all these parents are telling little Johnny that it is okay to break the law...but what bothers me more is that it is a night that crazy stuff happens and maybe the parents should be as clear headed as possible to watch the children. There is A LOT of traffic in our neighborhood (kids being basically bused in to ToT) and even 1 drink can slow down the parents reflexes to stop little Johnny from running into the street... yes, little Johnny should know better, but he might get excited to get to the house across the street that is all decked out with scary music, etc. for Halloween.

My DH and I were just talking about this last night.

We saw this too. Not only is it illegal to have an open container in public where I live, but this is a night for the CHILDREN!!!! C'mon can't mom and dad put the drink down just long enough to make it around the neighborhood?:confused3

I am not against drinking in front of children, breaking the law in front of them is another story. People are just teaching their children to be sneaky and that it is okay to break the law if you are sneaky about it. Parents are also sending the message that you can't have fun unless you drink. Instead of trick or treating, guess what little Johnny will be doing in a few years on Halloween night.....ummmm DRINKING!!!!

Even if it is legal where you live, it is the parents job to keep their children safe that night. Not to become impaired by alcohol.

Just my $0.2

actually it is more likely little Johnny will be at the local 7-11 underage getting someone to buy beer for him since his parents have hidden it and told him how taboo it is........

Um, ok. All I can say is I am glad I don't live where you live if all kinds of crazy stuff happens in your neighborhood. We had a couple smashed pumpkins but I suppose if a couple parents were more clearheaded and not falling down drunk that could have been prevented .

that depends!!

what law are you breaking? how different is it standing in my driveway and pool and moving next door to their pool? geez....

I see it here and don't understand what the big deal is. I could see it if people were passing out in my front yard but a drink or two won't have much if any affect on a walking adult. So I mind my business.

When I drink I find its easier to watch my children because I see all 3 of them double, so all 6 of them of them take all my attention :rotfl:

Is your issue with the legality of the public drinking, because it sounds more like you have an issue with the drinking while one is with children in general.
ETA I see you have answered up above, gotcha.

or

set the example that it is okay to be sneaky and the laws aren't meant for him.

Go ahead and drink in front of your children. I'm not saying to hide it. I'm saying do it within the laws of your state and lead by example as to when the "right" time is to do so. (for example not on a child's holiday, party, in public...etc.)

all drinking aside, how many posts do we see on the DIS about parents not paying attention to their children in stores, restaurants, name your place of choice......

Well, if there are 6 of them they have someone to play with so it makes it easier all the way around :lmao::rotfl::lmao:

?? little slow tonight, who is being sneaky? (the starbucks cups?)......

here, everyone had their poision as it was, beer bottle, I personally had a wine glass hand painted for halloween! No sneakiness, kids knew what everything was/is.

I suppose you have never broken a law when in the presence of your children. Have you ever gone over the speed limit? Have you ever used your cell while driving?
