Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

I have good news and bang your head against the wall stupid news.

Good news: Niece got into her first choice college; No indication of any financial aid. This is NOT my favorite school on her list, money notwithstanding, but I am happy that she's happy.

I want to kill her guidance counselor news: Apparently, Niece is in danger of not graduating because she didn't take some required state test, except she did take it...2 weeks ago because they never bothered to administer it last year when she took the corresponding class (and did well in it) because she was a year late taking the class because she transferred in...and they don't have the results back yet. I have a call in to the counselor but I doubt they can do anything until they get the results. Oh I know they don't have the results because the form letter they sent me (CERTIFIED RETURN RECEIPT - your tax dollars at work) doesn't list a score, passing or failing. The letter also informed me that she's in danger of not graduating because she only took 26.5 credits when 22 are required for graduation. Yes, you read that right. My head is about to blow off!

Definitely a mixed bag today for you!

Congrats to your niece on getting in to her first choice!

That is ridiculous about them saying she may not graduate...hope you get to the bottom of that asap!

My DS, who is a college sophomore, just heard about getting into the business program (super competitive McIntire School of Commerce at UVA) for his junior and senior years. He got deferred:headache:. At least he wasn't denied. 129 kids were deferred. They usually accept about 60% from the deferred list once the second semester ends, but he has to do a 2nd essay, an interview and get an A in accounting to make it happen. Fingers crossed!

This is the kind of stuff that makes the college decision so tough! My DS will need to choose between schools he may like less but is already admitted to the business program, and schools he likes more but will have to apply to the business school in a very competitive process (and be prepared with a back-up major).

Good luck to your DS..it is great news he is still in the running!

We got some exciting news yesterday for DS. He has been auditioning for college musical theater programs all over the country. Most see hundreds to thousands of auditioners but only admit between 12 and 25 students each year. He auditioned for 10 schools and, until yesterday, had received only two rejections. Now he has his first yes! It's not his first choice, but is a good, solid program. We looked up the stats on the school and learned that they generally see 1000 auditions and choose 15-20 for the program. (I don't want to mention the name of the school until he commits.)

We are all very excited and hopeful that he will get even more offers so we have choices. It's nice to have one under the belt. He will definitely be in an audition-only musical theater program. Now the only question is where.
Congratulations! That must be a huge relief that he's been accepted into such an elite group.

(1) Congratulations to her for getting into her first choice. I bet the test thing will shake out quickly.

bummer about being deferred :(. I'll keep my fingers crossed for him to come off the list in a couple months.

Yes! A huge relief! We also got word this morning that he's on a wait list for his top program choice. They had 700 prescreen applicants, invited 100 to audition in person, and will admit 12. The director makes a list of 10 alternates that she will admit if any of the original 12 decline the offer. Depending on how many decline and his position on the list, he could get a spot. Fingers crossed!

Wow he is really right up there!

Sounds really tough to get into. My DD15 would love to do musical theater but she would never succeed in those odds. And there is only one college in our state that offers it and she does not want to go there. Good luck to him, he must be very talented!

Congrats to you all! I know how intense that audition process is. DD went through it several years ago and is now happily singing and dancing at her number one. And just booked her first summer stock gig.

Good luck. This time next year, you'll be knee deep in Strawhats, NETC/SETC, UPTA or Outdoor auditions!

We are still waiting to hear back from Temple about our appeal for scholarship amount. The waiting is killing us. We paid her deposit and housing deposit bc last weekend were the Days to sign up for housing. Hoping and praying!!!!

Would you be willing to share some of the points you used in your letter? We're waiting to hear from dd's first choice but want to appeal her merit scholarship at another school if it becomes #1. I really want the school to consider that while she's a national merit commended scholar she would have been a semi finalist were we living in almost any other state. That would gotten her a $30k merit scholarship. Also, she got a perfect score on the math section of her SAT and that's her intended major at that school.

Thanks and good luck.

How do you decline an offer of admission? Niece's choice has narrowed down to 4 and I would like to stop the junk mail from the rest of them. There is no easy way that I can find to do it on the colleges' websites. Weird.

At the schools my dd has gotten accepted to there's a link on the page with her acceptance to either accept or decline. It isn't on the school's general website page
