Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Is anyone else anxiously awaiting MIT's decision for ds/dd today? For ds, it is a huge longshot, even though he has all the grades and scores within reach. I think it's a long shot for everyone who applies. Making a cherry pi and we'll all check the results at 6:28pm.

Good luck! My DD has a good friend who is waiting too!

I know this comes across as braggy (and a little bragging is OK!) but we were discussing this a few pages back. Our kids are facing some steep odds with many of these schools. This article says that current fifth year seniors at Georgia Tech had a 55% admit rate when they applied. This year's applicants have a 23% admit rate. The number of applications jumped from 14,700 to 31,400 during that period.

In any event, very proud of our son for all of his hard work and I know that all of you (despite some of the odd decisions these kids make) are very proud of your children as well. We are starting to see the end of the road. robinb's swimming story hits home and I am starting to shuffle work responsibilities to be present at various functions.

Our son says he cannot wait to leave South Carolina. He also says he prefers cold weather - I think he has seen snow on two or three occasions so he has no real experience. They have this idea that somewhere other than home will be better. I would like to send him to Philadelphia or Boston tomorrow to experience cold weather.
Brag, Brag and brag some more. Our kids have worked hard, these are the things we earn the right to brag about, especially when they really beat the odds!
Co-Workers DD has Georgia Tech as her 2nd choice below MIT - she is only a sophomore, I will share this article with Mom.

My DD grew up with snow and cold - Northern Nevada is NOT Las Vegas, we got snow, wind and cold. I don't miss it but she does. Then again, I loved it the first 15 or so years we lived there and as I got older, not so much so I see the allure and when I was her age I too hated the heat, so I see wanting out of Texas as well. Now that I am older, I like the milder climate

I know two of DD's friends are anxiously waiting. DD is still waiting on Berkeley

That's amazing that the number of applicants doubled in just 5 years and you are totally allowed to brag that your son made it! Especially when the out of state acceptance rate is so low. Bask in the glory for a while even if it's not his first choice. BTW, thanks too for the link. I'm now reading the blog posts of Richard Clark (one of the admissions counselors at GT) and I'm tucking away some information about the admissions and tour process.

I sit here at my desk and it's snowing. We drove 180 miles home last night in a heavy snow going only 45-MPH instead of the 65-70 MPH it took to get there. I wonder about these kids from the south who all want cold and snow!
Ugh - Glad y'all made it home safely - I hate winter driving conditions. To the southern kids its a novelty

The thing about blizzards is that they are actually kind of fun the first time around. As winter wears on, they become increasingly tiresome and more of an inconvenience and nuisance than anything else. We have actually had a pretty mild winter around here (Boston area), snow wise, but it's March and we are ready for spring. But, I would think that if this is their first blizzard of the season, they may actually enjoy it.

Congratulations to everyone who has heard good news! This waiting is so tough!
Its one thing to sit at home and watch it snow, its another to have to shovel it, drive in it and just deal with it in general. DD is planning on heading to Central Park to play in it!

We drove 7 hours to Massachusetts Friday evening for a 20 minute scholarship interview Saturday morning the jumped in the car and drove 7 hours home! And it was freezing up there!! DS feels really good about his interview and I found out they only interviewed 15 kids for 5 scholarships, so fingers crossed!
Also waiting to hear from one more long-shot school. They say we will know for sure by April 1, so one way or the other this agonizing wait is almost over!
That is some serious dedication - crossing my fingers

Here's an admissions article from Today.com. Really stuff we all mostly know. But I find it oddly comforting to know there are so many families across the entire country going thru exactly the same thing right now.

It's a thing, I know this but it just seems so personal when its our own kids "future" hanging in the balance

Crossing my fingers for you! Go PI day

Is something going on with the college confidential forums? I can't get on.

I hope that works out for her! Kids on my block wanted to do that too but our "storm of the century" turned into 2" of slush not snow!

We're getting it here. They said, though, that it's hit more inland than originally expected. They are pulling National Guard and other support from NYC to send to central NYS.

Good luck to your DS. Is the school in Mass his first choice? DD is still waiting to hear from all 9 of the schools she applied to!
His first choice school is a major long shot- the Coast Guard Academy. The class is only 295! (Will know from them by April 1) The school in Mass is where he wants to be if he doesn't get into CGA. It's Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Without this scholarship it is 10k more than SUNY Maritime.

Well the scholarship is worth $56k over 4 years, so yes I'll drive 14 hours! And there was another boy there who flew up with his dad from Key West, for a 20 minute interview!
I'm just curious - was in person required or would they accommodate via Skype?
Nice Scholarship - Good Luck!!!!!

I wonder sometimes how "scholarships" can have so many hoops or travel requirements when after all the purpose is to find "free money" just pondering .......

The email they sent made it sound like you had to go there. Maybe if I was in key west I would have asked. But I have to think if everyone else is face to face and getting to shake hands you'd have a hard time giving the same impressions via skype.
All I know is we don't qualify for need based money but we also can't afford 38k a year tuition. This scholarship will make it manageable. Plus he really loves the school! Should hopefully know this week.

DS' friend got into MIT! It's not even my kid and I am excited, lol. He had the opportunity to go to a snazzy private school, but decided to choose the local public school. I teach in the local elementary school and my kids attend the local schools. So proud of him for proving the local naysayers wrong!

Woo hoo! Glad to hear someone I "know" got in. It was a no for ds but we had a strong hunch it would be. Congrats to your ds' friend.

Sorry your DS did not get in. :worried:

This kid is brilliant. DS does well in school, but nobody compares to this kid and everyone knows it. He could be a snob about it, but he's not. He is such a nice kid! He contributes a lot to both the school community and the town. I have never met anyone who doesn't like him. :-)

Question from a 2018 grad mom.....my daughter just signed up to take her AP stats test, she is also taking AP lang right now but she believes paying to take the AP test for that class is a waste because no college will accept that credit anyway. Does anyone know if she is right? Is just taking the course and getting an A in it good enough for her college applications or is she missing the boat not taking the actual AP test? I have no idea. I'd love to save $90 but not at the expense of her actually needing that credit.
