Parents of 4 yo - what is their height/weight?

When my DS was 4, he was about 40 inches tall and weighed 32 lbs. He didn't reach 43 inches until he was 5. At that point, he weighed 35 lbs, but he is very skinny (even though he was 9.5 lbs at birth :scared1:). He didn't hit 40 lbs until he was 6!

Cute picture! Both boys are adorable. Hillbeans, I think your 4 year old looks "solid". Does your DH have a solid frame?

My 4 yr old boy is 45" and 45pounds.. 2 pound heavier than his sister who is 7 and is a STICK of nothing.

ETA he has a late June birthday and was 8.6 at birth

My DS is exactly the same as your son. 42 inches and 55lbs.

His Doctor reacted the same way at his 4 yo. visit.

He sent us to a nutritionist.
We did a bunch of blood test on him.
There was nothing abnormal found.
The nutritionist was very surprised at what my son eats.
He has Honey Nut Cheerios w/ 1% milk for breakfast 6 days a week.
On Saturdays we make pancakes, waffles or French Toast.
He eats PB&J Everyday for Lunch, usually with a handfully of whole grain gold fish, and some fruit.
He has an afternoon snack. Usually Yogurt or lowfat cheese stick or dry cereal.
For dinner he eat Veges. w/ brown rice or no yoke egg noodles.
He eats sweet potatoes, broccoli, corn, carrots, green beans, peas...
He likes baked beans. He eats pasta maybe once a week.
He drinks only Orange Juice, 1 cup with breakfast.
He drinks 1% milk for lunch and dinner.
Other than that he gets only water.

He goes to preschool 5 days a week in the mornings. They have a tiny snack there. Maybe 10 teddy grahams and 4 oz. of juicy juice.
But they have gym time every day for 20 minutes.
He rides his bike at home and plays outside.

I don't ever by junk food. No cookies... no chips... no fruit snack... nothing!
I feel like I am depriving him.
We eat mostly organic.
Part of my DS' problem is that he won't eat meat.

But I have a 3yo. DD who eats about the same as him and only weighs 32lbs.
There are a lot of obese males (like 300lbs) on my husbands side of the family.
I really think there is something going on with him.
He says he is hungry all the time. They checked his glucose and insulin levels and thyroid and said they were fine.
I just don't know where to go next.
He is now 4 years and 9 months and he weighs 60lbs.
People always make comments like, What are you feeding that kid?
My DDad has made comments to me that I need to do something about his weight.:sad1:
I just don't want him to grow up being the FAT kid that everyone makes fun of.:sad2:

Wow .. hugs to you. Looks like you are doing the right thing to keep him healthy.

I have no suggestions, but feel like sometimes people are bigger than others.

My DS is 7 and just hit 46 lbs and 47 inches tall this last week. I feed him everything .. fruits, veggies, meat, junk and he is just plodding along in growing, up until now he has been in size 4t and 5t clothing. He is not a picky eater and has a good appetite. He drinks milk, juice and water.. I give him water between meals. He has always been a tiny boy, 5 lbs at birth and with that was 2 weeks late. I only gained 19 lbs and trust me that had nothing to do with what I ate. I ate lots of fruits and veggies, but I LOVED Big Macs and Ice cream during that time.. wont touch Big Macs now LOL . Most of my family is fairly thin, but we work at it except for DH's dad.. he is very overweight. I have no idea where DS got his weight from.

My older DS was a very chubby baby & toddler until he was about 5. I mean he had ROLLS of fat on him. However, he stayed on the same growth curve the whole time. I was worried about him but the Dr. said not to worry that he was fine and "solid". Fast forward to now he is 11, muscular but thin(56" and 77 pounds)...no body fat on him anywhere. He does play baseball and football all year round and loves athletics. I would have never pictured it when he was 4!

He laughs when we look at his pictures from those days...so most likely your DS will outgrow it. I think my son grew into his weight between the ages of 5-7. Of course a healthy diet is good for making good habits, but don't make yourself crazy that it is all your fault. I would have freaked out if my Dr. hadn't been reassuring to me about my son's weight.
I'm going to try to post pics for the first time...eeek!

DS will be 5 in January and he's 42" tall and weighs 36 lbs. His best friend is almost exactly a year younger than him, but taller and weighs at least 10 lbs more. I think a lot of it is the genetics you're born with. Good luck OP!

My 7 year old daughter is 46" and 38 pounds....she is lean and tall.

My 5 year old son is 45" and 43 pounds.

My 6 year old is almost 50 inches and weighs in at 52lbs. My 11 year old weighs 91.5lbs at 5 feet tall and wears a size 11 shoe. My 16 year old weighs 170 at 6 plus feet tall and wears a size 13/14 in shoes. The older 2 were over 8 lbs at birth and just have kept a good growth.

My 4 1/2 year old girls are both around 42 inches in height. One is 40 pounds the other is 33 pounds.

OP here - I posted this about 2 weeks ago so was surprised to see it popup again!

Mybabysuz -my son's diet is very close to your son, even the snack at sdhool, except he does like hamburger and chicken. Just as you said about your son, my son wakes up and the first thing he says is that he is hungry or thirsty.

Just today we played outside for awhile and he runs around a lot getting exercise. I don't expect he'll lose any weight but i'm working to get it to stay the same by watching that he isn't eating close to bedtime and getting good exercise through the day. We're also getting him to just drink plain water more, small changes will hopefully make a difference.

Oh, and I meant to say to a PP that I don't think 40 lbs is small for a child this age, it's average/right on target but I think i'm so used to seeing my son "big" that it would seem small to me on his frame. I know people come in all shapes and sizes.

I agree with the solid comment. I think he looks like a sturdy kid that is probably strong as anything, and as long as he doesn't get into bad eating habits will probably be a solid strong boy/teen/man without ever getting *fat*. As long as he doesn't get his mind messed with by his doctor, that is!

I *hate* BMI. It doesn't take into account muscle at all, and that's always going to be an issue with me, and I just hate it. No better than just going by weight. Grr.

And BMI on a little kid! I'd be ballistic.

My little guy is squared he's 42 pounds and 42 inches

That's how my guy has been most of his life. :goodvibes

I got what you mean. My guy is smaller than yours, he's 45" and about 45 lbs, but he has broad shoulders and ribs and is strong. And after being sick for 2 weeks, getting better, going to Disneyland where we ran ourselves ragged, then getting sick again, when I saw the pictures of him, I realized that he'd been sick sick, b/c he'd lost weight and got scrawny. He lost probably 3 pounds over that month and looked *tiny*. Now he's put the pounds back on and looks solid and strong again.

I can't even imagine someone wanting a 4 year old, that looks solid and strong, to lose as much weight as it seems your doc wants him to! Just let him eat healthily, lose the fruit flavored water and IMO the cow's milk, don't make a huge issue out of it (like what happened with my husband, who was put on a diet as a toddler and it messed up his metabolism SO much), and let him grow into himself...

I tell ya, these peds, never happy. My cousin's son was tall and skinny, just like his father. The ped NEVER believed my cousin or aunt, b/c they are short round women (as am I). They finally *brought in a picture* of cousin's husband, to try to get the ped off her case. They just shouldn't have had to do that. He's now 7, still tall and skinny, still just like his dad.

I should preface this by saying that I'm the kind of person who would tell you if I thought your kid was overweight.

Your pictures was extremely helpful. The older boy looks to me like he is either fixing to shoot up a couple of inches (my skinny-minnie daughter always looks heavier right before she gets taller) or he could stand to grow into a few pounds, but NOT hugely overweight.

The younger child, however looks perfectly fine. He just looks like a solid little boy.

I'd put less stock in what the charts actually say and just take a good look at your kid. If you can see his ribs sticking out too far he's too skinny, if you can't see them at all, then he probably needs to cut back a little.

Hugs to you. Sometimes I think doctors are complete idiots these days. (Not all of them, but things aren't as cut and dry as a lot of doctors would have you believe)

I know how you're feeling OP. I was concerned about DD's weight (she was 6 and 65lbs) and had already taken her to the Dr a couple of months before when the school sent home a paper basically saying she was fat and to take her to the Dr.

She was very active, and got much more then the recommended amount of exercise. All her blood tests came back good. She has always been on the lower end of the height and higher end of the weight scales, since birth. She takes after her daddies side of the family as far as body type goes (he's Cuban). She is almost a "curvy" 7yo if you can imagine.

Anyway, we did 2 simple things. Cut out all soda at home (she still gets to have it as a treat when we go somewhere) only water to drink, and started measuring out meals and snacks by portion size. This includes all snacks, even healthy ones.

I know young kids aren't supossed to lose weight, but she is now at 58lbs and has grown a couple of inches. Her exercise has tapered off a little because soccer season is over until winter soccer starts. I think she actually gains weight during Spring and Fall soccer due to the workouts...she is VERY solid.

Do you really need a height weight chart to know if your child is obese or not?

Yes, you would be surprised. BMI indicated obese often looks very different from what most of us would consider "obese" by just looking at a child.

My dd started to get a little pudgy a while back and we cut her back to 1 sweet a day and VERY strict on that -- a sweet would be one cookie, for example. Ice cream only on special occasions. Then we fed her 3 healthy meals with all the vegetables she wants. She slimmed down in no time but if we stop limiting her sweets to one sweet a day again, I can see in a matter of days it shows up on her tummy. So, she eats 3 healthy meals, 2 snacks and one sweet a day to this very day, except on Christmas and her birthday we throw it all out the window.

We mainly go by how she looks. If I have to ask myself if she is gaining, that is my answer, she is gaining. Same with myself -- I don't need a scale to tell me I'm too fat. I have a mirror and pants to tell me that! :)
