Parents of 4 yo - what is their height/weight?

at 4 mine were all in the 30s. my eldest is 7 (8 in feb) and just hit 50lbs finally, but he's very lean, one of the lightest kids in his class. his brother (5, will be 6 in march) is 44lbs, heavier than his brother at the same age.

My son will be 6 in February. He is currently 44 inches and 39 pounds.

At 4, he was around 40 inches and 36 pounds.

Well, at 4 my youngest weighed 35 lbs and the middle weighed 33 lbs. I don't remember their heights. At 7 youngest currently weighs about 42 lbs - he's @47 inches and at 9 middle weighs 60 at @51 inches.

So your DS is definitely heavy on the height to weight ratio but is he chubby and bubbly or muscley?

And truthfully I don't know if I would put too much credibility in those charts if they are working off of BMI.

To put it in perspective for you Oldest DS is 5'2" and weighs 125 and he is a little chubby and wears a husky jean but is definitely not huge I've seen kids who are much much bigger. BUT because of BMI he's considered obese  Now DS and I are the same height and he now weighs what I weighed when I got married and I wore a size 10 wedding dress that they took in so what's obese about that :confused3.

My ds11 is 5'2", 114, and he's definitely a little chubby. However, my 3 youngest don't have an ounce of body fat. He's also my most active (on 4 teams this season), but has my metabolism, while all the other kids have DH's (who was a stick as a child). He knows he has to eat less than them, and exercise more.

I can't remember what DS weighed at 4 but he's 7 now and weighs 65lbs. He's in no way fat he's just very solid and always has been. He's in the 95 percentile in weight but that has been consistent his whole life.

My DS4 is probably between 45-50 lbs and I do not consider him obese. He is on the tall side for his age. I'm not sure his exact height though. He is solid but does have little love handles. He does not eat well due to being a very picky eater but he is active.

With both my kids I notice they chunk up a little right before a growth spurt.

I personally wouldn't freak out about it but I would try to make better food choices for him (when you can) and make sure he is getting excercise.

I have girls, so I'm sure its different, but my 5.5 yr old is 46" and 45 lbs. My 8 yr old is 50" and 46 lbs (she's a stick though).

My 10 year old is 52" and 50 pounds....she always followed the one pound per inch rule as a young child but she shot up a few inches this summer and her weight didn't keep up with that.

He wakes up hungry, and it's the first thing he says in the morning. He does like a variety of foods and fruits, not big on veggies but likes beans and veggie burgers. I try to only buy the Flavored waters instead of juice and give 1% or Skim milk, but he likes more than just one glass. I was thinking maybe he'd be having a growth spurt. When I hear the word obese I don't think that about him I guess. Here's a pic from July at WDW:

/QUOTE]

OP he looks a bit overweight but I wouldn't classify him as obese!!!

Just a snack suggestion, Frozen grapes. As long as the child sits when they eat them (for saftey) they make a great snack. Thats the only thing my freinds kids ask for for snack time here.

what a cute picture!!! I do think he looks overweight, though, to be honest.

hmmm....flavored waters aren't much better than juices, are they? plain water would probably be better. and milk they only need 2-3 cups of. even if he wants the extra, its not necessarily good for him.

just something to think about. its sooo easy to drink extra calories!

as for waking up hungry, mine do too. especially my 5 year old boy. he barely has his eyes open and he's looking for food. lol. I think that's pretty normal. I figure we eat dinner around 5:30, rarely have anything after (occasionally a yogurt or a piece of fruit). that's a looooong time till he wakes up (around 7) and has breakfast.

Both of my kids, when they were 4, were 40 lbs, 40 inches.

My son is 8 now and was 51 inches and 55 lbs. at his yearly appointment.

My daughter just turned 10 and weighs about 72 lbs, not sure how tall she is, maybe 56 inches tall.
Both of my kids are thin enough to need the slims sizes in jeans, regular sizes fall off of them, but I don't think they are super skinny. They're slender.

Last year's appt DD had gained 10 lbs in one year, but only grew about an inch and a half.
The doctor had no concerns about her weight as it was, he said she's still what I would term skinny, but that's a lot of weight for a kid to gain in one year, so just watch what kind of calories she's eating, make sure it's not a lot of junk..

Her appointment is coming up on Monday and I am pretty sure she didn't gain more than a pound, if that, since last year, but probably grew 3 inches..so sometimes kids gain the weight and then shoot up a couple inches.

It sounds like you're feeding him a good diet, I'd maybe focus on a lot of outside play-walk the dog if you have one, bike riding, park time..especially this time of year when it's easy to start staying inside more.
Maybe swim lessons at a Y? Something fun that keeps him moving at least an hour a day.

I had to go check to see how tall my son was at that age because he was always bigger.

He weighted 9lbs 10 oz at birth -- at 4 he was 45 3/4" tall and weighted 62 lbs. That was on his 4th birthday in May when he started school in Sept he was 47 1/4" tall and weighted 69 lbs. :scared1: I was so happy when he did go to school , people in the mall would look at me weird if he acted up, they would say guess there is no school today and I would shock them and say he isn't in school yet.

He would grow and slim out all the time though.

Nicholas is now 12 and this year when he started school he is 5'9 and 155 lbs. His height hasn't slowed down but his weight has in the last few years. Can you say size 12 1/2 shoe.

I take the kids measures the beginning of school and there birthdays....

my dd 3 (4 in dec) is in the 90% for height..43 in and she weighs about 38 pounds...she is heavy to carry because she is SOLID lol she has muscle lol

Denae - he was 9 pounds at birth and has always been big (broad shoulders) and a little off the charts in weight. He is a lot bigger than other kids in his pre-school and is one of the youngest. If he was 40 pounds he would seem too thin to me.
My almost 9 year old weighs 78 pounds.

My son is 4 and he is around 43-44 inches also and he weighs 36 lbs and I don't think he is too thin. He was also 10 lbs 3 oz at birth. My older son was also 40 lbs at 4 and 45 lbs at 5 years. He's 14 now and almost 6 feet tall.

There does seem to be a big surge of interest in overweight children. My kids at 4 were: 40.5 in, 36 lbs; 39 in, 32 lbs; and 42 in, 39.5 lbs

I cant remember how tall my DD was at 4 but she was very skinny. She only weighed 25 pounds. We had lots of weight issues though :( She was 28 pounds when she was 5 1/2

When Madison turned 4yo, she was 36lbs and 42in. At 5.5yo she is now 47in and 42lbs. Henry is now 39in and 31lbs and assuming he stays on his curve he'll be 41in and 36lbs at 4yo.

BUT, I have met Liam and in no way did he look morbidly obese or even close to that. Granted it's been, what, nearly a year, but still, he just looked like a typical 3yo. Sure, he was bigger than Henry, but most 3yos are bigger than Henry so that doesn't seem odd.

I think your Dr. is going by the BMI chart..

Here's your son's results:

A 4 year old (male) child
who is 55 pounds
and is 3 feet and 7 inches tall has
a body mass index of 21.0,
which is over the 95th percentile,

and would indicate that your child is overweight.

The problem though with this thinking is that muscle weighs moe than fat. So children who are muscular tend to make it in the high percentages.

Boys do thicken before growth spurts. I would try to make good choices for him. Flavored water is just as bad as soda pop. Limit his juice to 100% juice, one serving per day. Water it down make it more if he feels that it is not enough. Keep pushing water. Don't deprive him of snacks, but watch what you are giving him.

And since you said he is hungry all the time, definetely give more water, and 3 glasses of milk (8oz). Push crunchy veggies. And definetly get at least an hour of vigurous play time every day.

Most of off here is a . The dr. has no bedside manners. Your son may stay that way his whole life, so instead of putting him down (as in the dr, not you) teach him all the valuable tools he will need.

AMEN!!

Even if your flavored water has 0 calories, it still has the chemicals and sodium that mess with your metabolism. He would be better off drinking iced tea than flavored water.

As a PP said, don't try to lose weight, try to maintain and let him grow into it.

My child is 44 inches, 40 lbs - 5 years old; my godchild is 44 inches and 53 lbs -- 3 years old. :scared1: She's an amazon, like her sister.

My DS is exactly the same as your son. 42 inches and 55lbs.

His Doctor reacted the same way at his 4 yo. visit.

He sent us to a nutritionist.
We did a bunch of blood test on him.
There was nothing abnormal found.
The nutritionist was very surprised at what my son eats.
He has Honey Nut Cheerios w/ 1% milk for breakfast 6 days a week.
On Saturdays we make pancakes, waffles or French Toast.
He eats PB&J Everyday for Lunch, usually with a handfully of whole grain gold fish, and some fruit.
He has an afternoon snack. Usually Yogurt or lowfat cheese stick or dry cereal.
For dinner he eat Veges. w/ brown rice or no yoke egg noodles.
He eats sweet potatoes, broccoli, corn, carrots, green beans, peas...
He likes baked beans. He eats pasta maybe once a week.
He drinks only Orange Juice, 1 cup with breakfast.
He drinks 1% milk for lunch and dinner.
Other than that he gets only water.

He goes to preschool 5 days a week in the mornings. They have a tiny snack there. Maybe 10 teddy grahams and 4 oz. of juicy juice.
But they have gym time every day for 20 minutes.
He rides his bike at home and plays outside.

I don't ever by junk food. No cookies... no chips... no fruit snack... nothing!
I feel like I am depriving him.
We eat mostly organic.
Part of my DS' problem is that he won't eat meat.

But I have a 3yo. DD who eats about the same as him and only weighs 32lbs.
There are a lot of obese males (like 300lbs) on my husbands side of the family.
I really think there is something going on with him.
He says he is hungry all the time. They checked his glucose and insulin levels and thyroid and said they were fine.
I just don't know where to go next.
He is now 4 years and 9 months and he weighs 60lbs.
People always make comments like, What are you feeding that kid?
My DDad has made comments to me that I need to do something about his weight.:sad1:
I just don't want him to grow up being the FAT kid that everyone makes fun of.:sad2:
