Pandemic?

there are 3 suspected cases here in nicaragua just saw it in breaking news:scared1:

They should call this virus the "Travel Bug" instead of the swine flu...it sure loves to make it's way around the world:upsidedow

:lmao::lmao: yeah true!! there is 1 confirmed case in costa rica.. thats pretty close!

and the 3 suspicious cases are form 3 mexicans that just came a few days ago:headache:

Well, I gotta tell you. I kind of always wanted to start a thread that had a really high post count. Don't we all?? ;) This wouldn't have been my 1st choice of subjects. Sigh.

Really opened a can of worms - huh? :rotfl:

Want to know how sick of the subject I am? I had a flat tire this morning. I was THRILLED to have the diversion!:lmao: 4 new tires and 2 new rims later.... anyway, I digress.

So I'm walking a fine line here. I want to be knowledgable and informed, and I want to be cautious, but I don't think withdrawing from life is what is called for yet. DH is driving me CRAZY!!.

Now this is a very healthy attitude.. :thumbsup2 Stay informed, but don't go bonkers - don't stop living - and focus on the positive aspects of how this is being handled, rather than the negatives.. :goodvibes

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Anyway, my DH did NOT withdraw my kids from school yesterday, and has not mentioned it again since (though I really think it's just a matter of time). Perhaps the wall-eyed FIT that I threw had something to do with it. I keep waiting for that shoe to drop. DD17 has already said that her daddy will have a very resentful and rebellious teen on his hands if he does that. I gave her a bit of a hard time about the comment, but I totally understand what she's saying.

eta...and I'm totally not telling him that one of my managers got back yesterday from a vacation in Acapulco, connecting in Mexico City. Nope, not gonna do it.

LOL..I was just reading your tag and thought 'she got a thread goin now!!' LOL
Yeah, dunno I'd mention that to hubby just yet about the mgr in Mexico! :rolleyes1

Yes, BUT.... what the heck am I supposed to do with DH????
----------------

Remove him from all sources of media and tell him it was all a hoax..:rotfl:

If that doesn't work - try a therapist that specializes in CBT.. He/she will be able to sit him straight pretty quickly about how harmful and pointless it is to be handling this situation in the manner that he is..:goodvibes

(Oh - and definitely don't tell him about your co-workers!!!)

Good luck! :)

Buy a plastic pig snout from a party store (have him put it on) and Fashion a hat out of tinfoil, place it on his head. Then tell him with a straight face that as long as he keeps them on, he is now invincible from the swine flu. ;)

:lmao::lmao:

And to Got Disney, about closing the border with Mexico, some in the worldwide medical community believe this may have actually begun in the US, and been brought to Mexico during Spring Break.

Anyway, 2 days ago was waaaay too late to close the borders. The Americans who caught it while vacationing in Mexico (people in Ohio, NY, WI to name a few) had already been home, and had already exposed everyone on their planes, the airports for each layover, their schoolmates, families, store clerks, etc.

:thumbsup2

Unfortunately, what he is really trying to do is keep our whole family from getting it, so the only way that could be truly convincing is if all 4 of us wore that! :lmao:

sorry, but i have had it. the media picks out the scariest words after a news conference and blasts them at you. MORE DEATH LIKELY, GLOBAL PANIC, IS THIS THE BIG ONE, HUNDREDS OF "CHILDREN" INFECTED, etc, etc. a lot of that is the age old, my "story" is bigger than your "story", if you will forgive the paraphrase. and then we get on here and scare each other silly. let me give you one fact. WORRY IS A WASTED EMOTION. there is not one thing that will play out differently because you sit and bite your nails and ring your hands and lay awake at night. maybe it is a form of therapy to post about it for some. for others it is just another way to stir the pot. so relax, at some point this will end. it will not end in a positive way for everyone, it will end one day to late for others. it may turn out to be just a whimper, but it will be what it is.

I have the same questions!

The problem with this strain of flu is that it is completely new vs other strains that have been around and have mutated but we still have some natural immunity to this. Then add to the fact that it makes your immune system go into hyperdrive vs weakening the system and the healthy people are more at risk then people with weaker immune systems. The way it effects people is why this could potentially be more serious then the 'normal' flu.

WORRY IS A WASTED EMOTION..
------------------
Took me a long, long time to "get" that, but I've "got" it now and I'm not letting it go!! :thumbsup2

What I have learned in the past weeks/months NOT to do (thanks to CBT and a phenomenal therapist):

Catastropisizing: "Oh my God! There are 100 cases in the U.S. This thing is spreading like wildfire!!!!"

All-Or-Nothing Thinking: "This is the worst flu ever!! EVERYONE who gets it is going to die!!!"

Fortune-Telling: "Based on the little information we currently have, I just KNOW that this is it! This IS the pandemic!! My entire family is going to get this and we're all going to die!!"

Emotional Reasoning: "I FEEL like this could be very, very bad - therefore my "feelings" are FACTS.."

Overgeneralizing: "There are X number of people in NY that have confirmed cases of swine flu - therefore EVERYONE in the state is going to be exposed to it, get deathly sick, and die!!"

Mental Filtering: "There are concrete facts available regarding this outbreak - and how it can be successfully treated -BUT - they don't fit the "belief" that I hold that this is going to kill millions of people - more specifically, MY family - so I'll filter out those facts.." :snooty:

Disqualifying The Positives: "There currently is no pandemic.. There currently are not thousands of people in the US that have this disease.. People are not dropping dead like flies.. This disease is treatable.. Health organizations are on top of it.. I have no "rational" (fact-based) reason to believe that I or my family is in any immediate danger.." All positives - but instead I will choose to disqualify those postives and focus ONLY on the negatives..
---------------------

Nope.. Been there, done that - for way too many years of my life (as evidenced right here on the boards) - and I'm not going back.. It's hard work - and I have to stay on top of it every single day - every minute of every day - until it comes to me as natural as breathing - and I'm not about to let all of this "pandemic" talk drag me back to that utterly disgusting place.. (Insert puking smilie..)

I've made a choice to change my life for the better - I'm loving every minute of it - and if I get the swine flu and die tomorrow, at least I'll die happy!!!
:goodvibes

-----------------

And that concludes this evenings lecture on how to turn your life around if you're at all interested..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Really some useful information there though - if you take the time to think about it..
;)

I think people just want to stay educated about it and be prepared in case it strikes them or theirs!

Why are you bolding almost everything you wrote on the last couple of pages? :confused3

------------------

It's not your eyes - it's mine.. I have a problem with them.. If things get fuzzy, I bold - when they clear up, I don't.. No big mystery..;) I could try different colors, but I think that would be even more annoying - at least to me anyhow.. Sorry if it bothers you..:goodvibes
