Palo - Disney Magic (Brunch) Question

When I last cruises on the Magic (9/27/14), Palo had switch the brunch to where servers filled your plate at the buffet. That is definately a turn off for me and the DW. Was wondering if that is still the practice. Going again in 6 weeks and wanting to see if things have changed or not. Thanks.

Any other comments on the servers filling the plates is welcome. I am not a fan.

I would hate that! I'm guessing it was a temporary rule because of "something" going around on the ship? I've heard of DCL taking measures to keep illness to a minimum if someone on board has fallen ill. Hopefully that's all it was.

We were on the Wonder in February and I would think they were the same. The servers did not fill our plate. We did it ourselves :)

That only happens when a certain percentage of guests have been diagnosed with illness. All buffets & drink stations are switched to being run by CMs and pin trading with CMs is suspended to avoid additional hand to hand contact in an effort to get the health conditions onboard under control. So while it is a bit awkward at Palo brunch, the change is in place in order to help spread whatever illness is currently active onboard.

that is my hope that it was for only that particular cruise. I am wanting to find out if anyone recently has returned off the Magic to verify before I book.

The story we heard was that it was a change to enhance our experience. That's the only reason i am questions.

We had no other restrictions on the Fantasy (pin trading happened, Cabanas remained self-serve) in Feb, but the servers filled our plates at brunch. It was odd at first, but really wasn't a big deal. If you wanted more of something than what they'd put on the plate you could just ask for more.

A couple of weeks ago at Palo brunch on the Fantasy we had servers walk with us and fill the plates with our requests, and they told us it was now implemented on all the ships.

It was easy, fun, they were nice to talk to, it didn't hold us up, we got as much of anything as we wanted, we took our time deciding, it was not crowded, we returned several times, and it was yet one more way to interact with the classy servers they have in Palo.

Don't make up your mind ahead of time you won't like it...because then you might not. It is a couple of minutes out of the Palo experience, and in my opinion Disney implemented this new standard with class.

We were just on the Dream and had brunch in Palo and they did this as well. We did not care for it either. My daughter asked if she could do it herself and they let her. I wish I had asked as well. They were friendly and nice, it just made it so it was hard to think about what I wanted and how much. We did not go back for seconds, and we all decided we wouldn't be doing it again on the next cruise.

My DW and I had this service twice in the last few months. The DW did not feel comfortable when she asked the CM for 2 chocolate covered strawberries. The CM wanted her to only have one. I would prefer that DCL ask if you need assistance with the buffet. For sure, the DW will NOT want Palo Brunch if it's not changed back.

And..... I do understand the health concerns, but we do the self serve at Cabanas..... Just saying.

I will most likely clarify after I board. I will see if the change is official OR if I can opt out and us help ourselves.

This was the case on our Fantasy cruise (10/18/14), though I think I've heard different reports on the service after that. Cabanas, the ice cream stations, all drink stations etc were CM-service only this from Day 1-3 of our cruise, we guessed this was due to the ebola in the US panic around that time since it started with embarkation lunch (before anyone would have had a chance to be sick onboard). Starting on Day 4 the common stations reverted back to self-serve, but we still had a guided server at Palo brunch on Day 6. I do agree with you we weren't as pleased with the concept.

I don't think that having someone fill my plate at Palo is going to make me think"oooooooo someone even filled my plate for me, wow". just don't think so. IMHO.

more responses welcome

We are on the Magic next week and are looking forward to the Palo brunch. Something tells me that we will not like being "served" our brunch selections either!!

you know they will give you tour, at the end just ask if you can help yourself. Please let me know. Is this the first time on the Magic for you?

So it sounds like it's happening on the bigger ships, but not the classic ships?

I don't mind the idea that much, but this is off-putting:

The DW did not feel comfortable when she asked the CM for 2 chocolate covered strawberries. The CM wanted her to only have one.

Would be interested to hear if there are other reports of people being actively discouraged from taking the amount of food they want?

yes. we have been on the Fantasy and the Dream. Never had this happen to us in the past.

Just had brunch at Palo on the Magic on Friday, it was all self serve except for the hot items that they prepare to order and are brought to your table by your waiter.
