Palins' Assets Are Worth Up to $2.1 Million

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/03/AR2008100303595_pf.html

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, have assets worth up to $2.1 million, and they paid $24,738 in 2007 income taxes on total income of $166,495, which came from her salary as governor of Alaska and money he earned as an oil worker, fisherman and snowmachine racer, documents released by her campaign yesterday show.

The tax returns indicated that Palin paid no taxes on $16,951 in state payments she received as meal and incidental expenses when she stayed at her home in Wasilla instead of at the governor's mansion in Juneau.

Alaska's director of finance has already declared that the state does not consider these $60-a-day payments taxable. Accounting experts and some tax courts have differed on the question of whether such compensation is tax-exempt. Yesterday, the McCain campaign issued a legal opinion from Washington lawyer Roger M. Olsen supporting the state's view that the payments are not taxable.

Palin stayed in her Wasilla home 312 nights, or 54 percent of the time, when she claimed reimbursements from Dec. 4, 2006, through June 30, 2008. Although her staff has said most of her work as governor is performed in Anchorage, 45 miles from Wasilla, Finance Director Kim Garnero said the state capital in Juneau is considered her duty station, making her eligible for the non-taxable meal and expense payments.

In the couple's 2007 return, which was prepared by H&R Block, Palin described her occupation as "public service" while her husband declared his as "oilfield." The couple claimed six exemptions, including themselves and their four children.

Total charitable donations came to $3,325, or about 2 percent of total income. These included $2,500 in various non-itemized gifts and an $825 in-kind donation to the Salvation Army.

On a separate financial disclosure form, the Palins valued their home in Wasilla at between $500,000 and $1 million. Their mortgage interest deduction of only $10,203, reported on their tax return, suggests they have substantial equity in the property, according to one tax accountant.

Todd Palin's commercial fishing business is worth between $50,000 and $100,000 and the couple's fishing leasehold in Nushagak River, Alaska, is valued at $100,000 to $250,000.

Along with mutual funds and property, their total assets are between $880,000 and $2.1 million, the form indicated.

Much of the 2007 tax return deals with Todd Palin's varied business activities. Although he won $17,000 in prize money in Alaska's Iron Dog snowmachine race, he reported a $9,639 business loss after deducting equipment depreciation, repairs, fuel and other costs of racing.

However, he reported a profit of $15,513 on his commercial fishing operation, even after deducting $12,245 paid to his crew as a share of the catch, along with other expenses.

His major income was $43,518 from his job as an oil-field worker for BP. He paid $204 in union dues.

In 2006 and 2007, the Palins filed their returns in August and September, respectively.

[The Associated Press reported that the Palins underpaid their 2007 taxes by $2,017 when filing for an extension, but that the McCain campaign said the balance had since been paid. It was unclear if they might owe penalties or interest.]

In 2006, they paid taxes of $19,951 on total income of $128,005. That year the bulk of the family income came from Todd Palin's job as an oil worker, which paid him $102,716.

Palin did not take office as governor until Dec. 4, 2006.

I noticed that their charitable contributions in one year exceed Biden's charitable contributions over a 20 year period and Obama's, despite his income, until he decided to run for president.

I noticed that too.

I noticed 2.1 million!!!!.....so much for the folksy, working class mom.

Let me get this straight...If she makes $100,000 as governor, and he is a commercial fisherman....where does 2.1 mil come from???

Looks like they don't spend all the money they make. Another example that she "walks the walk" not just "talks the talk".

I regularly donate my time. So in your books I do not give.:confused3

I donate to causes $25 - $50 at a time and I usually do not claim it. I guess I should, because according to you, if it is not on your taxes, you didn't do it.

I guess i should stop sending all the boxes overseas - they probably don't want the baby wipes and energy bars anyway. If I don't claim it, I didn't do it.

A spokesman for Biden, David Wade, tells York that says "the figures on Biden’s tax return do not reflect the true extent of his giving."

Wade: “The charitable contributions claimed by the Bidens on their tax returns are not the sum of their annual contributions to charity,” Wade said in a statement to NRO. “Like most regular churchgoers, they contribute to their church, and they also contribute to their favorite causes with their time as well as their checkbooks, whether it’s [Jill] Biden’s volunteer work with military families or the Biden breast-health initiative, or the way in which the family pitched in driving supplies to the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, or the ways Sen. Biden has supported charities that help women, police, and veterans.”

More from Wade: “Like a lot of families that put three kids through college and have an aging parent move in with them, the Bidens aren’t divorced from the realities of everyday life,” Wade says. Still, Wade continues, “finding ways to give back is important to them.”

Thank you for reminding people that the only reason to contribute is to get a tax deduction. Nice. Very Nice.

Could he do more, Sure.

Could you or I? Of course.

A folksy, working class mom who knows how to manage her money and makes good decisions. And is charitable.

The 2.1 million comes from income, real property, savings and investments. I guess she's not as stupid as a lot of people would like her to be.

:confused3 That's funny part; I don't know one person who wants her to be stupid. Why would I want a potential VP to be stupid? That comment makes no sense. I would love for her to be a formidable opponent and she's not. It has zero to do with wanting her nomination to be a bad joke- it just is.

Just curious, why would you not claim it?

Combination of disorganization and just not caring enough to. I guess there is an underlying not wanting to get flagged for audit (never been).

Really, with it being a reciept here and a reciept there.....it just doesn't matter that much to me. Alot of times when I go to buy something for the rescue group I work with - I just buy it I guess I don't even think of alot of it as being deductible.Never thought to separate stuff out at the pet store to make it so I could deduct. I guess I give more value to my time - and that is not deductible anyway.

People give to their communities in a variety of ways. I believe it to be very narrow to believe it has to be money.

Sssssshhhhh. Don't give away our secret. We're supposed to be filled with hate and nastiness. ::yes::

Sorry but I see a lot of posts and the media taking cheap shots at her and getting a lot of enjoyment from it.

For example, I don't ever recall anyone in the media asking any candidate on either side what sources they turn to to keep up with national affairs. Her answer was lame but the question was insulting.

FWIW, I don't like seeing a lot of what's been said about Obama either. I see great potential in both Obama and Palin.

As others have said, the 2.1 figure is all her assets, not her yearly salary. I don't find that alarming at all, although she's certainly fairly wealthy.

What I do find alarming is a statement on another thread that Biden's total assets are 300,000 - apparently equal to one year's income. THAT I find alarming! Hopefully it's not true for him. Nearing the end of his career that would be sad. I guess it does make him an "average joe" in terms of poor money management if it is true.

Todd Palin is also a commercial fisherman. I would guess that his fishing boat, which would have to be big enough to do the job, would be expensive and figured into their assets as well. Yes, it is shocking that Biden has so little available assets put aside for being 66 years old.

I see your media point, I really do however, she does portray herself as campy and silly and by doing so discredits herself and does her party a great disservice.

So living comfortably within your means is a bad thing?

He will be taking home 80% of his salary upon retirement, why is his financial situation shocking? I thought living comfortably wihin your means was a good thing? Does his family want for anything?

I noticed that $825 of that was from "in kind" donations to the Salvation Army. Did you know you can deduct $6 for a pair of blue jeans? They probably donated clothing and took a huge deduction. "In kind" isn't cash. Could be that she volunteered some hours with the Salvation Army (good photo op, too) and then took a deduction on her time. The other deductions were not itemized, either. They could be similar. Still pretty cheap, if you ask me. I guess they didn't tithe, either! Tsk tsk.
