Palin on SNL

I am not a hunter but DH's dad was. I quickly found out that hunters get a kick out of what non-hunters perceive they do.

Although I have no interest in hunting, I no longer regard all hunters as from another planet. DFIL didn't go into the woods guns blazing and shoot every fawn in sight because it made him feel bigger and badder, but until I figured that out...well, DFIL had a blast letting me stereotype him.

Hunting is a way of life in Alaska and I'm sure that moose fed the family for a few days. Sarah Palin is probably used to us Lower 48ers' silly assumptions.

I understand that. What shocked me was the "I'm an animal!" line. I thought it was kinda strong.

I know Palin is very proud t be a hunter. She may be used to the lower 48 "silly assumptions", but she's not trying to appeal to just Alaskans anymore. The lower 48 get to vote too.

What does this mean? She's going to start a colony on Mars? :confused3

I'll help her pack.

I assumed she was making a joke and by "done" she meant she would no longer do the Palin character on the show.

That's normal for a non-actor. SNL has plenty of experience writing around their hosts - athletes in particular come to mind. Years and years ago when Jesse Jackson hosted, the funniest stuff was by the cast but not him.

I dunno - Jesse Jackson reading "Green Eggs and Ham" was one of the funniest things ever on the show.

I agree. I remember seeing Bob Dole on Letterman right after the election and thinking to myself, wow, he is completely different than I had him pictured. He was funny, engaging and I wondered why he didn't do the appearance before the election was over.

I remember seeing that and thinking the same thing. I think there's so much fear of saying something wrong in interviews before the election that they don't venture to say anything interesting.

Well, there are a lot of hunters in the Lower 48 too. If people are ignorant about hunting (and I was), what can Palin do?

That WAS funny. But I was talking about back in the 80s when he first ran for president. Does anyone remember the control room switch?

Perhaps not flaunt it like it was a great virtue and even a bigger joke?

I don't know, I was mostly addressing the poster's point that dismissing the thoughts and feelings of the lower 48 as "silly assumptions" won't help her much. There may be a lot of hunters in the lower 48, but there are many, many who don't share her views, and they vote too.

I couldn't think of anything better than "silly assumptions" and I had already used stereotype. Forgive me, I need a thesaurus big time! :lmao:

My point was that I think Sarah Palin gets that people don't agree with her views or hunting. She's obviously not dismissing them because she laughed at their interpretation of hunting.

ETA: I do think people have dismissed a lot about Palin because of her Alaskan roots - or they're just dismissing Alaska. Take a field trip there and you'll have a new respect for Alaskans. No weather above 70 degrees, no light after 2:00 PM six months straight, no Walmarts...I couldn't do it!

I could never live in Alaska. I get cold when the temps are in the upper 60s!

That is true, but most of the guests participate much more than she did. She really didn't add anything to the show.

When 'Todd' came out I exploded in laughter. I've watched it 3 times again today just to see that part. Oh the moose falling over too- OMG! :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao: Hilarious!!!

Here's the link in case any wants to watch it again:

:rotfl2:

I TOTALLY agree:thumbsup2

"Todd lookin' fine on his snow machine so hot for each otha' he's a go between"...OMG I almost peed in my pants! The guy playing Todd doing that dance thing and then pointing to Alaska after the "my country 'tis of thee" my Dh was rotfl and rewinding the DVR about 3 times.

"shoot a muthahumpin moose 8 days of tha week" that moose was hilarious!

Seeing Amy bopping around rapping with that huge-about-to-pop belly made it even funnier.

Palin took it all in good stride. She seems to have a good sense of humor. I liked her "you betcha " line at the end.

Oh--drill baby drilla.....all the mavericks in tha house put your hands up!!:woohoo:

And what was up with the animal (donkey?) behind Palin & Michaels backstage?

That was a llama/alpaca (I couldn't tell the size), so there was no donkey/democrat connection. There was a donkey in another skit later in the show, but the animal behind Palin was not a donkey.

Unless you were there, one hypothesis is just as possible as the other.

I don't think so. I don't think she's naive enough to think that she and Senator McCain are going to win. It would definitely be in her best interest for her future to play along with just about anything. She went along with a lot I thought. I assume that only very strident mocking would have been acceptable?

Dana Carvey did a great impression of President George H.W.Bush but also respected him as POTUS even though he was parodying him.

I don't understand Fey's disdain for Palin, despite her not agreeing with her politically. IMO, it makes Fey seem small and petty.

Gov. Palin was an excellent guest for SNL and showed she is above all the insults the show has delivered to her repeatedly.

As for Alec Baldwin......He was simply HORRIBLE. He only had a few lines, couldn't he had remembered them? He never took his eyes on the cue cards.

Alec Baldwin was terrible. When he was supposed to be calling Gov. Palin "Tina", he never looked at her.

But I did like her line, "And Stephen in my favorite Baldwin brother!" :lmao:

Alec is their go to guy. He's always enjoyable to me (even when phoning it in like Saturday). I still remember him warning Ben Affleck that if he messed up his hosting duties that He (BAldwin) and Goodman (John) were circling the building every 5 minutes...just in case.

The still doesn't change the fact that either scenario was possible.

That's par for the course with all the cast members and hosts for SNL. They are all terrible at avaioding the cue cards.

Alec Baldwin posted an article on a democratic website saying that Palin was gracious and polite. Seems some extremists are upset that they did a sketch with Palin. :sad2:

The animosity between the two as they passed each other "on stage" was almost palpable. And I don't think it can be completely contributed to good acting.
I thought there was more animosity at the end when they all come forward after the show. SP was looking around and it took a while before some one from behind approached her with a hug. The HOST didn't seems to want to acknowledge her at all, which I thought was rude. I don't think SP was bait for the show. She held her ground and did the best she could.

I'm glad I stayed up for the weekly update as well, b/c that was the highlight of SP appearance.
