Painting Kitchen Cabinets - Help?

So I'm going to paint my kitchen cabinets. We added additional cabinetry that hasn't been finished and since I really don't care for the color of my stained cabinets already in the kitchen AND I don't want to have to try and match a stain color I did 10+ years ago I'm going to paint them. So what color do I go with? While I'm at it I'm going to change counter-tops and put down a wood looking vinyl plank floor. So the counter top I think I am going to go with is just formica with a swirly creamy - browny pattern. I was going to paint the cabinets an antique white - but will that look bad with white appliances? The update is for our enjoyment for now, but also to sell in the next year or so. Our house is a tiny 2 bedroom 1 bath that will be a "starter" home for someone young, or someone who is downsizing as they get older - I don't really think anyone in the market for our house will expect anything other than the materials I'm selecting. I don't want to change appliances at this point though and will probably sell the house with what we already have - well actually do plan to purchase a new stove before then, but that's it.

So.....1. what color should I paint the cabinets when I have white appliances? and 2. Any tips on painting kitchen cabinets would be welcomed :)

I'm getting ready to paint ours white. We have white appliances, too. The walls will be painted grey (taupish grey) and the counter tops will most likely be a medium charcoal. I'm not sure of the backsplash yet (currently it's white tile), but I saw some with butter, grey, white, and charcoal mini glass tiles that I loved and am thinking of using that).

If had white appliances, I'd paint my cabinets white and antique them, so they wouldn't be stark white but they would still blend with the appliances.

I would go with white too but I guess it depends on what else is in the room. I painted the cabinets in one of our houses a wedgewood green and I LOVED those. Another option would be to go with a gel stain if you want to keep a wood look. You pretty much do the same as you would to paint but you end up with wood cabinets vs painted. I am planning on doing that in our kitchen when I get the motivation to do it :lmao:. We have a lot of cabinets and it will take a couple weeks to get it all done.

This is our kitchen. The black are my dish drawers. We're having panels made to match our cabinets. I love the green and red. The island has Creme de Bordeaux granite and the counter tops are Brazilian cherry. Originally my cabinets and island were white but it looked sterile so I warmed it up a bit.

ooo, I love that green kitchen!

We painted our cabinets white a few years ago and we have white appliances. I love white though! We do have white tiled countertops and I would like to change that someday so the whole thing isn't white, but we have no money for that right now. Our walls are a nice beige and we have little accents of color with little teapots and other things on the shelves.

Good luck!

Your kitchen sounds great and thanks for the compliment!

What color are your walls?

I'm more of a contrasty person. While I think the white on white on white would probably look good (hey, it's fresh and new, and there's a lot to be said for that), I think it would look better with some contrast of colors.

Have you considered a modern chocolatey to darker brown for the cabinets? That, I think, would look nice with your countertop colors (creamy-browny), and between the countertops and appliances, your kitchen will still be light. Alternatively, you could do a splash of color via a curtain or wall color. But the color needs to be somewhere, IMO, otherwise it may seem washed out. (Although I do really love the beachy-all white look!)

I'm going to be painting my cabinets in the near future too. Mine are an outdated dark wood with 1970's looking hardware. I'm thinking of painting them white with either brushed or satin nickel hardware.
This is going to sound silly but do you paint the inside of the cabinets too? Some of the home improvement websites I've looked at say don't bother :confused3

My walls are currently white - however those will be getting painted also, I just haven't decided on a color yet. I had considered a dark brown for the cabinets - but would that be neutral enough to appeal to buyers you think?

I'm not good with picking colors. But I would recommend using a Cabinet and Trim paint (like at ACE hardware stores). I painted my bathroom cabinets with it and they turned out great!

A word to the wise: Use some Kilz on the cabinets first. I once painted a huge country kitchen in a lovely shade of green. The cabinets looked good for about a month before they got scratched up. Then I had to go back and scrub the paint off, apply Kilz and then re-paint.
