I just read her pre-trippie. Sounds like a wonderful family! They would be fun "Big Give candidates" if they were willing. Their trip is soonish so we'd have to be quick about it! :rotfl: Let us know what you come up with Shannon!

WISH TRIP UPDATE 1!

It appears that there are only 2 families with upcoming trips that are linked to the wish tripper thread. One is coming up in August (that family's PTR was linked earlier). I have contacted that family and hope to hear from them soon. When we have filled the requests for that family, I will move to the next family on their list. With so many willing designers here, I would imagine that we could fill their requests pretty quickly.

Questions for those of you who do embroidery with their machines.

Can you get a bigger hoop for the Singer Futura?

Do you do embroidered designs or just appliques. So far I have only made black Mickey Heads.

I found some adorable pirate embroidery designs but they require at least 4 thread color changes. Is that hard?

You CAN get a huge Hoop It All hoop for the Futura. Check www.singertexas.com for info.

I don't own that hoop yet (YET! It's $200-$300 - I'm holding off for a little while). You do have to be able to split your design into multiple hoops (again, something I don't know how to do because I don't own that hoop yet).

I have done both embroidered and appliqued designs. To change the thread is not that big of a deal - it's very similar to changing the thread on a sewing machine. Much easier than changing the thread of a serger.

I understand the cultural reason for not allowing people to cut hair, pierce ears, etc. Especially since I am here in Texas where they took all of the Fundamentalist Mormon children for about 6 weeks and later gave them all back after they found their reason for taking them was possibly unfounded (although I suspect there was some abuse somewhere and if what they suspected, sexual abuse and rape horrifies me, I would hope that it just was not within EVERY family with minor children). But you do have to question whether a parent who has had their parental rights taken away should have any say over anything pertaining to a child. I am sure this might get me flamed but really, how many times should one person get to screw up a child?
As a former teacher I cannot tell you how mad it made me to have a student who had had older siblings taken away by CPS and she was left b/c they didn't think she had been abused. Yet she walked in to school one day with a perfect semi-circular burn on her face from having it put to an electric stove coil burner. I actually couldn't see straight I was so upset. :furious:

Please, for those of you who are social workers, please don't think that this is aimed at you. I feel you are hard working and over worked. I truly believe that it is the court system that lets most of these children down. I heard Oprah say once that you get one chance at harming a child and after that society should be done with that person, and I believe that should be the case a majority of the time.

Okay, off my Off Topic Soap Box now. Back to our normal sewing chats! Sorry, and don't forget that I am a little hormonal right now!

You definately won't hear an arguement from me!

Wow, thanks for taking this on.

a few thoughts of my own.

1. The theme here is BIG give. and while I love to volunteer and give back to my community that usually only happens through other organizations. If I were to search for a foster child or such in my own town there would be little that I would be able to do...I'm only making 1 outfit for the big give and I already had the fabric. There is no way I could make multiple outfits for a family due to time and money. The blessing of the BIG GIVE is that we are all able to put our small contributions together to make a WOW statement. And being part of this give in no way keeps me from participating in things that give directly back to my irl community and beyond. Giving is part of my life. I buy products from companies that give to the charities I am fond of rather than spend my money w/ ones that don't. I am active in amnesty international and the ONE campaign. I hope that the effects of my actions are felt around the world, not just on my block of it.

2. I am in favor for working directly for the Ronald Mcdonald house or MAW foundation. I think you'd find that they will be excited to have us onboard. I also think that then we would probably have to figure out what we can do as a group time and effort wise so we could say that we could do x amount of outfits for x amount of kids every x amount of time (does that make any sense) If we can do 1 outfit per day of the trip for 4 kids every 2 months then maybe that's 1 family w/ 4 kids or 4 families with 1 kid... kwim?

BUT let's not count out the MAW thread here. That would keep the spirit within the community. I just don't know how you'd decide who to Give to or how to verify it.

3. We'll probably also have to set a person to be in charge of shipping the outfits. It was easy to have us each send our contribution straight to Alicia and if we use the MAW thread then we can continue to do it that way but if we start to send them to the charities, I doubt they are going to give us the recipients address. I also doubt that they will want to sort out everyones mail. If that is the route we take it may require sending our outfits to one dis'er and that person sending out the cumulative package.

OK. I'll get off of my soap box now. Whatever the decision is I am on board. I think it is a great idea.

Are you kidding $200 for a hoop? :scared1: I only wish to make a slightly larger Mickey Head!!

So, does the machine stop and tell you when to change the thread color?

Those are all great thoughts, T! I couldn't agree with you more. In "real life" I work for a major charitable organization, so I definitely understand the importance of giving to local groups. I do that every day. In my mind, this is sort of above and beyond that. BUT, because of that, I definitely feel the need for verification and organization (I'm just compulsive that way).

I would LOVE to see this grow to the point of working directly with Give Kids the World and send everything to them just like you suggested. But in it's infancy stages, I think it's a great place to start right here! We know of a few families here that are involved with MAW, so I think that's a good place to start. We can grow and adjust as needed.

As far as shipping - for this first project that I'm hoping to work on, we will probably all have to ship directly to the family because their trip is coming up SOON! I think that may be easiest to insure that they get all of their gifts in time. For the next family, we may decide to ship as one big package. We'll have to figure it out as we go, I guess.

So, does the machine stop and tell you when to change the thread color?

Yes, the machine stops, and beeps. You'll either have to change colors, or press the button for the machine to start again. It's fairly simple.

It IS crazy the price of that hoop, isn't it? THAT's why I don't own it. I really, really want it. But not quite that bad YET!

I have to hem dds and adjust the back elastic, I think it is a little loose. I also might add a ruffle. I will be doing an applique of some sort on ds shirt.

ry%3D320

I made the shorts and found this shirt a kohls on clearance. It matches pretty good don't you think??

ry%3D320
ry%3D320

I had a ruffle on this but it did NOT look good in fact it was hideous so it gone!! I think I will just hem it. It was the fabric choices that were bad the ruffle was cute.

I also cooked up some curly ribbons so I am hoping to make my first corker bow this week! I am really excited about that and I really don't know why! :confused3 :rotfl2:
I have Wall-e shorts almost done I think I ran out of the elastic I need for the waist, I was sure I bought a bunch but now I can't find it :headache:
I also have to finish a pirate outfit for ds friend for a birthday party on saturday. I guess I better get busy that is sounding like a lot to do now that I am typing it

Thanks for the comments on the Pirate ship every one.
I was thinking it looked a little castle-ish too Lily!! Dh wants to call it the grey pearl. I think we can be a little more original! There will be a mast (flag pole) so it will look more ship like. I am going to search out some fabric to make some flags with the kids as craft projects.

I knew you ladies would understand the DH thing! Thanks for the  and :flower:

ok everyone, I'm ordering petti (3) any ideas on color. just curious if anyone has them and the colors they like. I'm at a stand still, I'm wanting 2 all white, but the lady I'm ordering from doesn't have them. I just odered a red, with black and white. Don't know which kid will where that for halloween. I already have 2 of the disney petti. My girls love to wear the pettiskirts. I'm just needing some input. Thnaks

I wasn't able to participate in the Big Give but think you have all done a fabulous job with it.

For future projects, I think it would be great to start with the DisBoard Make a Wish participants, but it may be short notice for their trips. For other MAW recipients, I would start with talking to local or regional foundation representatives. They should be able to guide you with needs for their chapter or regional chapter and perhaps provide other contacts as well. The wish coordinator could also work as the channel to the families. I'm sure it would be similar for other organizations as well. Even if it isn't for a MAW trip, you may just have a child who wants to be a "Princess for a Day" or a smaller wish that you could assist with.

Someone earlier had asked about giving toys from toy drives to foster kids. In Atlanta, one of our Radio/TV personalities does a toy drive for Foster Kids every Christmas. They have specific needs and wishes for each child and do a week and half long toy drive to try to meet the wishes for the entire state foster kids. The response every year is amazing. I'm sure its just a matter of finding the right contact for your state/city to donate items.

A cross stitch internet group I participate in did fundraising for the SC chapter of MAW. Our second year of fundraising, the representative came to pickup our donation at the end of our convention and did a presentation of one of the wishes our previous year had directly helped them provide, which was a Disney trip for a local child. It was really nice to see the results of our fund-raising efforts.

They came out great! I saw that patchwork fabric the other day and I almost bought it but my son roped me into something different.

My dd has a bright pink one with matching shirt which is really cute! She is very much a pink girl so that may not help:) I know she loves the rainbow ones but since it is a suprise I picked on she coud wear with alot of things and considering her whole wardrobe is pink, pink works! :rotfl2:

Any suggestions on attaching a collar? I am making my son his bowling shirt and I have o clue how the collar should be going on but it seems like the collar is too long for the part of the shirt it will fit. I checked the pattern several times and it is the right size. Is the collar supposed to be smooshed to the rest of the shirt?yes smooshed is a technical term in my house:rotfl:

OK I can only skim again today but awesome outfits as always! Mousetriper I am just blown away that you painted the princesses, they look incredible :cool1:
I got my degree results a couple of days ago, and I passed!   I feel so relieved to be done with education :)
I'll have some pictures of my own to post at the weekend (hopefully) but in the meantime, I thought i'd share my sister's final project from the art course she's been doing. She got a distinction (highest mark you can get) :goodvibes It's fairytale themed and Alice in Wonderland features heavily!

Oh my gosh!!! Your DS is getting handsomer by the day!!! I love his long-ish hair! His froggy shorts are great and they do match the Kohl's shirt perfectly! Love the 4th outfits and the Pooh dress. You are on a roll, girlie!

I saw pics of the pirate ship and wanted to say it is GREAT! How cool!

Smooshed most definitely IS a technical term! :thumbsup2

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. When I made the bowling shirt, it stretched from one side of the shirt to the other (when I layed it out flat like it shows in the picture), to about 1/2" to the end of each placket. If that's not what you were wondering about, sorry! If you post a picture it might help us understand the problem you're having.

Sorry I don't have any advice about the collar- I always have my grammy help me with that part.

Thank You! I am getting the "Eye" and have been told by my grandma (not the sewing one) that his hair is getting far too long and he "really should get a hair cut" We probably will cut it soon- it's getting hot around here- Finally!!! But he really doesn't want to get it cut! We may have to bribe him. :worried: Oh and the "pooh" dress is actually the backyardigans- LOL
Thanks!
