I also made another A-line (and I've got a few more in mind too  ). I've been thinking about this one for a while. I had thought about doing a roundneck but was afraid it wouldn't fit my DD perfectly and I'd be disappointed. I'm pretty happy with how this came out. My DD(9) will wear this to Chef Mickey's when my DD(5) wears her Mickey Mouse Clubhouse skirt. I also have plans to make my DS(7) a bowling shirt for Chef Mickey's.

I can't decide if I like the daisy buttons. I think I might like black & white better.

Oh and here is what I did to make it. I used the Simply Sweet top pattern to use as a guide for were to cut the A-line pattern for an empire waist.

Instead of cutting the front & back on the fold I used a rotary cutter and ruler to add a 1/4 inch to that edge of the pattern as I cut it with the cutter. I also added the 1/4 to the top of the skirt and bottom of the bodice with the ruler as I cut with the rotary cutter.

to Stephanie's son!!!!

i was just wondering, how many of you were sewers before you saw this thread and how many of you started after being amazed by everything on here. i thought i would never sew after a 7th grade sewing teacher said some very mean things to me after i couldnt thread a bobbin. but i have now done 4 outfits and am so grateful to you guys for inspiring me to try and succeed at something i never thought i could.
I felt like a miserable failure after I made some disasterous overall-ish pants for my nephew when he was a baby (and I was 17). They finally fit him now, 15 years later. Teresa has a hilarious picture of him wearing them, but I can't find it.

I decided to take the plunge into sewing after my sister showed me this wonderful thread. Last July (I thought it was in June, but it was exactly a year ago today!!) I made these 2 outfits for Lydia and Tessa.

This is my favorite outfit I've made to date. I finished it in January.

I love this thread and the people who post here. It's been such a wonderful year with you all!!! Happy anniversary!

Your girls just melt my heart!! They are so sweet and you can just see how much they love each other! :lovestruc

I've always LOVED this outfit!! Thanks for posting clearer pictures. Your nephew takes wonderful pictures!!

Very cute!!!

My kids are wishing you guys a happy Fourth of July! - (they're being firecrackers. . . )

Everyone have a great day and stay safe!
Your little cuties always make me smile!! How funny that they're being firecrackers!!!

Great outfits, too!

I'm hoping someone out there can help. I'm looking for a pattern or idea for a bib/apron that will protect the front part of a flower girl dress during the reception dinner. DD is 7, so it can't look like a traditional 'bib'. I would like something quick, easy and cute that would slip over the front of her to protect the ivory dress from the dreaded pasta sauce!:) Thanks!
Here's one that might work. If you used a pretty fabric, it could look cute and not "babyish"
http://mybyrdhouse.blogspot.com/2007/08/august-apron-tutorial-paint-smock.html#links

There's an "Apron" category under "Accessories" in the bookmarks that might have something else you'd like.

I finally finished something for The Big Give 2.

How CUTE!!! Logan is going to love it!! I'm putting in a vote for orange pockets on the shorts. I love the fabrics for Hannah's shirt, too!

I made a bowling shirt today too. For my tomboy DD(5). She loves lizards so I thought this would be perfect for AK. I was hoping the placket makes it a bit feminine and the buttons almost look like flowers. I think I have enough of the lizard fabric to make one for my DS(7). I just need to find a good masculine contrast fabric for him.

This is great. I love the colors, I'd wear it myself! I like your idea about making it girly with fancy buttons. I have to find some pink or sparkly buttons for Hannah's shirt.

Oh my gosh, that is SOOO cute!!! I love it!! The lizard fabric is fabulous, where did you find it?

This may be a silly question, but where do ya'll get the applique's from? Are they just cut outs of fabric, are they painted on?? I am a newbie to sewing but would love to make my DD some of these cute outfits for our next trip!
I wrote an applique tutorial that will show you how most of us do the appliques.
http://disboutique.blogspot.com/2008/04/bestest-applique-tutorial.html

There are some pre-made appliques on ebay and others have embroidery machines. Some of them are painted on, too!

I LOVE the daisy buttons. SUCH a cute dress!!

I added some 4th of July Fireworks pics (taken July 3rd!)

What great first outfits! Lydia and Tessa have grown a lot in a year. I love your Cindy dress too!!!!

This is great. I love the colors, I'd wear it myself! I like your idea about making it girly with fancy buttons. I have to find some pink or sparkly buttons for Hannah's shirt.
Thanks! I found some really cute pink ones with swirls of white at JoAnn's to use on a bowling shirt for my oldest DD's with Pink Flamingos.

Oh my gosh, that is SOOO cute!!! I love it!! The lizard fabric is fabulous, where did you find it?

I LOVE the daisy buttons. SUCH a cute dress!!
Thanks! I got the lizard fabric at 60% off at JoAnn's a few weeks ago. I forget what they call that section-sorry. It wasn't the novelty collection were they had the flamingos and baseball stuff. Could it have been called a summer collection or something like that? If I still have the flyer I'll let you know. It is 100% cotton but relatively light weight. I had thought about lining the sleeves with the dots fabric so we could do a cuff but you could see it a bit through the sleeve so I just stuck with the white. I also thought about piecing the back with the dots but I know that Emma really loved the lizards and she actually isn't crazy about polka dots so I thought I better do the back full lizards. I got the polka dots because I thought the colors worked well and she hasn't complained yet.;)

I can't believe how much they've grown! They both look so much older in your TR (which I'm going to go read the latest installment RIGHT NOW!).

What do you use when you want to use your embroidery machine to do an applique, as far as like a spray? Do you use quilt basting spray? Nothing? Trying to decide if I want to try one.

And what do you think of whatever you use? Thanks!

I use a spray made by Sulky - Temporary Spray Adhesive. I bought it because I hadn't seen the quilt basting spray. When this can runs out, I'll probably replace it with quilt basting spray simply because it is less expensive. I think the Sulky brand works fine, but it was way over priced (IMO).

I just started about a month or 2 ago after I found this thread. I have done some AG clothes for my DD and made curtains with my mom right before I has my DS6 yrs ago. Then I found this thread and I am so hooked! I have actually found myself the past few nights thinking about fabrics and what would go together and how I can make certain outfits! :scared1:

These ladies are amazing and inspiring!

I just started sewing the end of last July early August. Here is my very first top. And 2 I've done recently. (Kinda funny they are the same style?

Funny - I'm working on a set now using the same fabrics that my first top was made with - same style as the last 2 too. Maybe I'll do it as an anniversary thing and do it yearly. ;) We've also progressed to the Big Boutique Bows!!
You give me hope! So maybe by this time next yr I can be making cool stuff like you! :cool1:

Stephanie

Happy bday to your DS!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been "sewing " since I was young. But not actually "sewing" I made a short set for a 4H competition when I was 13 and I've made pillows or reconstructed some of my clothing in HS. As far as real, sit down w/ a pattern sewing I just started making a few things before I found this board. I hadn't even thought of sewing clothes until I came here (over a year ago I think). THIS is my first dress.

I promise to get pics of the 4th twirl top today. I may have another outfit to post as well.

WHAT...NOONE wanted the recipe for Applebee's Red Apple Sangria??? I'm the only lush areound here or what???

...t.

Another one to give me hope that with in a yr I will be so much better!!!!!

For your overall ? have you checked Osh Kosh? When mine were younger I LOVED OshKosh overalls. My son still wears lots of OshKosh.

Here are some better pictures of the detail on the guitar shirt! I don't think I ever posted these after my super cool and talented nephew did them for me! This may not even be the top that was mentioned, but just in case anyone was interested in seeing it close up. This is maybe one of Drew's favorite things I have ever made her!

I finally finished something for The Big Give 2.

This is Carla C's bowling shirt pattern. I'm really thrilled with how well this pattern came out. I love that it is lined. I also have cut out a pair of matching shorts out of the Nemo fabric. Do you think that the cargo pockets should be blue or orange?

I made a bowling shirt today too. For my tomboy DD(5). She loves lizards so I thought this would be perfect for AK. Linnette, you continue to amaze me! You did all that in one day? You definatly can sew circles around me. I love that "easy" top. Did you use a pattern? I would love to try one for me.

I think most things sulky are overpriced! LOL! Gotta use what you can find though! I am really starting to like ebay for my sewing stuff, with hardly any stores nearby makes it easy, minus the I can't really look at it closely.

Linette, WOW! You've been busy! I love it all! I might just start making me some shirts, yours are inspiring.

My 90 year old grandma has been in the hospital again since Thursday. They just diagnosed her with congestive heart failure. My grandpa lived with this for quite a few years. But, we're really worried about her. She's been so healthy up until a few months ago. I know she's 90 years old and she's lived a full life and all that. But, if you could say a little prayer for my grandma (her name's Bethel), I'd really appreciate it. :grouphug:

Thanks! I got the lizard fabric at 60% off at JoAnn's a few weeks ago. I forget what they call that section-sorry. It wasn't the novelty collection were they had the flamingos and baseball stuff. I got the polka dots because I thought the colors worked well and she hasn't complained yet.;)
Thank you! Maybe it was the juvenile fall fabric? I know that was 60% off a few weeks ago. It doesn't look fall-ish, but who knows! The cowboy fabric I used on Hannah's dress was in that section, so it was only $2.40/yard!

I can't believe how much they've grown! They both look so much older in your TR (which I'm going to go read the latest installment RIGHT NOW!).
Yay!! Will you post a comment over there and make me feel all special? :cloud9:

Linette!!! WOW!! Now you're just showing off!! :rotfl:

I'm glad you're feeling a little bit better. How is your DH doing?

How cute! It looks like the kids had fun! Henry worked at the PD last night, so I just stayed home with the kids.

Of course I can include your Grandma in my prayers. You guys will be thought of as well. I know how difficult things like this are. Please know I ma thinking about you nad your family nad praying for strength to your your way. :grouphug:

Wellllllll, My entire family sews, my Mum was raised by her Aunt and Uncle - they owned a tailor shop, and my great-Aunt would make wedding dresses on the side. My Mum grew up sewing (I think she even made most of her prom dress), and she sewed most of my and my brother's clothes growing up. My great-aunt gave me a kids' Singer when I was nine, and I would make stuff for my dolls. Then in Girl Guides (Girl Scouts are called Girl Guides in most of the world) I earned my seastress badge, and sewed a few things. But because most of my clothes were home-made, by the time I became a teenager I had no interest! Any my Mum and I would butt heads while I tried to sew using her machine, so I gave up! I made a couple of pairs of shorts for Girl Guide camp, and sewed badges onto my uniform, but that was it. Then I found this thread (I don't even know how I found it).

And now my Mum is stunned. She can't believe I'm sewing. I guess it's been three months since I've started, and I've made a twirl skirt and 5 pairs of easy-fit shorts. I also have the fabric for two dresses, not sure which ones to make! I have another twirl skirt and three pairs of easy-fits cut out and ready to go! Now all I have to do this weekend, is master my ruffler . . .

No i know I have to have this pattern. This is adorable. The fabric is too cute.

This may be a silly question, but where do ya'll get the applique's from? Are they just cut outs of fabric, are they painted on?? I am a newbie to sewing but would love to make my DD some of these cute outfits for our next trip!

There are different types of appliques. You can buy them, sometimes they sew on or iron on. Use an embroidery machine. Or make them yourself. A good Pattern is a coloring book page.

I also made another A-line (and I've got a few more in mind too  ). I've been thinking about this one for a while. I had thought about doing a roundneck but was afraid it wouldn't fit my DD perfectly and I'd be disappointed. I'm pretty happy with how this came out. This dress is looking great. Can you find a black and white button? Or a dotted button? I think the Daisy works. But if you could find something to contrast, you might like that better.

Hope everyones 4th was fantastic!!!

The best place to watch fireworks is on TV. :happytv: There are a few places around you can see them here. It's not like when I was a kid, and everyone lined up around the airport. Sparklers and fireworks are illegal around here. Alot of people stop in SC to buy sparklers. A few kids had them on our street.

My 90 year old grandma has been in the hospital again since Thursday. They just diagnosed her with congestive heart failure. My grandpa lived with this for quite a few years. But, we're really worried about her. She's been so healthy up until a few months ago. I know she's 90 years old and she's lived a full life and all that. .

My thoughts are with your grandma. My Mom-mom had it many times. The first was probably the worst, because she thought she had a cold that wouldn't go away and didn't get to the Dr. until it was really bad. Then we and she learned the signs and got her to the hospital as early as possible. I will pray that all is well.

Oh, you sound so much like me!! I had that little Singer to. I just gave it to our local sewing shop to use in their display. I used to drive me crazy because that chain stitch would come undone!! :headache: Now that I finally got the right ruffler, I can start to work on that thing to.
