Long time reader, finally registered. My wife's the disneyholic but I guess you can say I'm converting. I'm the cheap one though. So I've noticed if I just get a 7 day/6 night package at Port Orleans on their site its $2672. However if I get just the room its $1316 and the tickets are $1269. This is only $2585. What does the other $87 pay for in the package?

We usually use AAA to book everything which is a little cheaper but I cant figure out what might be the difference in these two things.

Thanks for the help.

Package price is higher - What am I missing

Likely not too much.

We have made dozens of trips to Disney.

Only once have we bought a "package."
That was when they were offering the "Buy 4-Get 3 Free" deal.

We've always come out ahead buying ala carte.

I think they stopped automatically including the insurance. I have always thought the "package" was only necessary if you wanted the free dinning. I have noticed before that if you wait for a code, especially room only you can do better. It really comes down to your dates....IMHO

I otice a lot of times when I price packages it adds extra day tickets or park hopper or water parks and more to pkg.

I have currently been doing the same kind of comparison as we are planning a trip to WDW as well. We have always done packages and I was curious if it would be a big price difference otherwise. Along with booking a package you are given a coupon book; this is included in the "Magic your way" package. In the coupon book is percentages off various activities and I believe $15 for Planet Hollywood etc. As far as I can figure you are essentially paying for your coupons, nothing is actually free in life anymore lol :confused3. I could be wrong but that is my guess.

You can add a "room-only" discount to the resort portion of your package.

They also automatically add on hoppers and the water park option - which is very expensive - when you price out a package. You also have to look at the room category.

Yes, go through all the details carefully. One factor is that if you look up a package online and a room catetgory is not available for those adtes, then it will not show up at all. Room categories at POR have just gotten more complicated with the opening of the new princess rooms.

Also, I'm guessing your dates are the same, but if your dates aren't exact, then rate chages are possible -including weekend/weekday rates.

As far as I have prcied, once upon a time, it actually did cost more to book a package than individual components. In the last few years they stopped that, but it is possible they could start it again.

Last..and I hate to say this - also check your AAA quote carefully. It is entirely possible they also made a mistake.

I have received that coupon book several times...never used a single one..they were useless in my humble opinion

Not sure of your dates but there is a room only discount through June. That may be what is messing you up when you add the package.

Many, many trips and we have only got done the package once. I always do room only. For some reason, we always seem to find better deals that way.

Again, a room-only discount can be applied to the resort portion of your package. You don't have to have a separate room-only reservation to apply a room-only discount.

$87 really does sound like trip insurance. Even though it does not show on the first page, when you select the offer to pay it, it adds it in still. It did it to me last night when I was pricing out options for a Christmas trip.

Trip insurance was my first thought but I guess I just didn't look close enough. Thanks to everyone for responses. I haven't got the AAA quote yet but I'm going to get it and compare to just buying a room from them and then getting tickets. Not sure quite yet if we'll do the plus dining. We have the last 2 times but man that's a lot of food. We're going in July so unfortunately its during peak.

Yup.

Complete meals with amounts of food and desserts that you normally would not even order.

You either stuff yourself until miserable (especially while riding in the parks)
or leave the extra food items on the plate... or try to take them with you...
that will ultimately often just get thrown out.

Who's saving money that way?

.

I understand what you are saying as far as adding the discount to the room portion of the package, however if they don't want to include dinning then why would you buy the tickets from Disney?? They are much cheaper elsewhere and can be combined to KTTW card at check in. I believe the OP was looking for better pricing.

I thought the OP said he was trying to figure out why he was getting two different price quotes.

And, the OP also stated that they are undecided about the dining plan. If they think they might want the DDP at some point then they don't need to purchase tickets from a non-Disney ticket broker - and really the ticket broker prices like UG are a slight savings, but I wouldn't consider it "much" cheaper.

Which DDP did you do? We always to the Basic/Plus Dining - 1 TS, 1 CS and 1 Snack per person per day and we LOVE it - I actaully can't imagine going to Disney without it.

Anyway, since you are going in July there won't be a lot of discounts, certainly not Free Dining, so it may be better to book with AAA and buy separate separate tickets - of course, that's only if you definitely decide against the DDP because you have to have a package with resort and tickets to add the DDP.

Good luck! Hope ya'll have a magical vacations :-)
