OK, so I have about 30 years experience with a totally manual SLR and 5 years experience with a digital (little more than) point and shoot. Got the little digital guy to do a lot for me. Never use the auto.

So, we go out and buy our brand-spanking-new DSLR (D70S). I think, well, yeah, I can do this camera. The more I use it the more I realize I have A LOT to learn!!! Then I complicate things by buying the SB600 speedlight. I had 3 manuals out yesterday trying to figure out how these things work together!!!!

So, what is the point of this post??? Well, I guess if anyone has any tips on what settings they really like to use for the speedlight would be helpful. From what I gather, looks like "mode" TTL BL is used most often (at least that is what I gathered). Then, again from what I gather, after you take the pic, check the histogram for a good light distribution (even lighting-getting used to checking this now), and if it is over or under exposed, adjust the + or - button to compensate and re-shoot the pic. Am I on the right path?? Will more questions like this irritate anyone?? ;)

You are definitely on the right track :)

You can actually preset your white balance/histogram in advance and probably not have to retake as much.

Thanks! So what you are saying is that setting it (the +/-) in the white balance mode on the camera is the same as setting it on the flash?

But I would still have to take at least 1 pic to figure out how to adjust it, right?

Yes and yes...to a degree. You will need to take two to four photo's to get pre-set. Set the WB on teh camera and the flash to where you feel ti should be (eventually this will be automatic for you) and then follow up with one to be sure it's working. Once it's set you are all good unless your lighting conditions change measurably.

Thanks Anne :thumbsup2 .Good to go on that hurdle. Stay tuned...... :lmao:

I have the D50 but haven't gotten the SB600 yet. I've picked up a lot of good info from www.nikonians.org they have specific forums for each of the Nikon camera's. I never really got into flash photography, instead just used the external flash for better flash coverage than the popup (on my old SLR). Let me know how things are turning out. This will be my next purchase, but probably not till later in the year though.

Good luck.

Thanks HC18. I also visit that website quite a bit, but looks like I need to visit the Flashes board more often. I am not registered on that one, so I figured I would ask all my questions here. Stay tuned......
