Our weed smoking neighbors

We had the same issue on a visit in 2020. I mentioned it when I checked out, and they told me I should have let them know. I really think some people don't view it as "smoking," for whatever reason.
Maybe Timon and Pumbaa can add it to their safety video?

another complicated problem with no easy solutions in the near future :( I am happy to pack up and move to a different room if a smell is bothering me (and it has happened before!)

With my asthma I definitely have to move if a smell is triggering me. Weed doesn’t do it but cigarettes and certain dogs do. I would’ve moved immediately. But been super annoyed.

I sent them an email. I wanted to take a few days to compose my thoughts. I put in as much factual information as I could. With this seeming to be an increasing problem. I hope that they come up with a plan that would take care of situations like this in a more timely manner. Their go to can't always be to move the complainant and inconvenience them even more. Especially without any compensation or upgrade. I also feel that if I was loud and threatening that I would have been taken seriously from the beginning. I hate that being nice about things get you swept under the rug.

This is not always the case. In fact, I believe it's just the opposite. You were persistent in your approach and are continuing with the follow-up e-mail. Good luck with the response and keep us posted!

I agree with this. I still say that nice is always the way to go. Example: When I arrived at the GF in December, my room wasn't ready. I just simply asked if there was a glitch with the app and wondered if maybe my room was really ready. I just was trying to figure out my plans for the afternoon. The guy gets on the phone, and the next thing I know I'm being upgraded to a lagoon view room with a view of the park. Had I approached that desk like a raving lunatic, I wonder if I would have been treated the same.

You handled all of that with a calm head. Bravo.

I agree that nice is the way to go. We are just not the kind of person to be a jerk about things. But Disney has a history of throwing things at the loud mouths to get them to shut up. I think it is sad that they reward those who do the wrong thing.

The argument could be that WDW does not have the right to deny legal usage. They don’t deny any other legal medicine so that’s where discrimination could come in to play.
Disney has Federal law on their side. It doesn't matter if medical or recreational pot is decriminalized in the state of Florida, it's still illegal in all 50 states per Federal law. As a result, access to medical marijuana is not protected under the ADA, Disney does not have to accommodate. Discrimination suites in defense of medical marijuana are few and far between because they usually get tossed out. This will be sticky issue for years to come, especially because of defensiveness and boldness on either side of the issue.

Long ago, I found it's easier to just ask to be moved, because if someone is brazen enough to smoke (anything) at their hotel room/balcony, then they are usually too stubborn/defiant/entitled to let management deter them.

I think people tend to forget that you have every right to speak up. The Yacht Club is not cheap and a Disney Vacation is not cheap. You deserve to have a vacation that you seek. Smoking in a Smoke Free hotel is not allowed. Period. If someone is doing it then something needs to be said. I know you don't say you want compensation but I feel like you deserve it and Disney should have compensated you for the inconvenience and the extra money you probably spend on food not even realizing it that everyone was always hungry.

I had a reservation for a night at the Boardwalk one time and the room we were suppose to be had a plumbing problem and there was no other rooms available. They offered to put us up in The Beach Club. For us that was a great solution and we didn't mind the change at all but the manager went above that and gave us a free room at any resort of our choosing on our next visit. There was no expiration date and we could get any resort and any view. We ended up using it to book the Grand Floridian Resort View on my next trip (But changed to Boardwalk a few days prior as we love staying next to Epcot). They went over and beyond and it was much appreciated. I didn't expect it but its the reason why I keep going back to Disney. I believe your owed something for 3 days of your vacation being inconvenienced. Just my Opinion. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I hope the rest of your trip was great.

I think cigarette smoke/weed can often times permeate through the walls. We had the misfortune of being on a disney cruise and our neighbor next to us would smoke on his verandah the entire 12-day cruise!!! I complained to guest services and nothing got resolved. They couldn’t move us since all verandah cabins were full and neither did they refund any portion of our cruise/give any inboards credits 🤦‍♀️

I’m sure a good lawyer can come up with a few. Would they say anything to someone giving an insulin shot in their big hairy belly at dinner in V&A’s? No. That could potentially impact other guests.
There’s many details that still need to be ironed out; it’s new territory without enough legal precedent.
I have to say that this really annoys me. Tell me how my precious daughter giving an insulin shot in her small, hairless belly would affect other guests. :confused3

I find that smell revolting and would super ticked off. I agree YOU shouldn’t be inconvenienced to move; and if so- it should be an upgrade for the inconvenience. But then again, I wouldn’t want to take the chance of that nasty smell lingering either so I’d probably just move. I’d be irritated, but I’d probably just do it. What a bummer this happened. :/

Question
What would have happened if they had called the police?
Disney refused to take care of it really and a law was broken.
Not much different if any other law was broken.......

Had the police/sheriff been called, they would have investigated. Had the individuals not been legally allowed to possess/use medical marijuana they could have been arrested for possession. The case would be referred to the State Attorney's Office. They would not ultimately be prosecuted. Even if they were legally allowed to use/possess medical marijuana they could have been trespassed from Disney and asked to leave due to violating their rules. The medical marijuana statute explicitly does not limit the ability of a private party to restrict vaping or smoking marijuana on their property.
