Our trip is in August-book flight now or later?

I haven't flown in about 10 years and I had a travel agent take care of everything back then so I don't know much about how airfares work.

I see some flights going for about $100 pp each way roundtrip. I guess that isn't bad, but I was wondering if they are usually cheaper this far in advance, or is it more likely that they will be cheaper later on? Our trip is the end of August.

We usually go mid to late August, and always book as soon as we decide our dates. I have never found the airfare to go down. (We fly from Newark to MCO.) I just booked an early Aug trip on Jet Blue, and waited a week too long and our flights went up $10. Now they are up an additional $30. Just my experience.

Booking a flight and/or waiting for fares to come down is a lot like playing the stock market!

My suggestion is: if you are comfortable with the fares you are seeing, book them now. Sometimes they go up as you get closer and sometimes they go down. So you may look like a genius (or the opposite) by booking now, or you may look like a genius (or the opposite) by waiting.

It's truly a case of "Hindsight is 20-20!"

Thanks. I better go ahead and book it then. I just have to get my DH to sit down with me and discuss what time he wants the flights.

I always go in August and book my air late March/early April. I live in NH and for some reason it seems to go down around then. Right now its about $300/pp r/t and I usually pay $175-$200/pp.

We booked our end of August trip a couple of weeks ago. We got a RT from ORD to MCO for $171. I was happy so I took it and have vowed not to look again!
