I hope things are going better with Max and he's blending in with the family....
I just wanted to tell you that I used Kitty Litter....I didn't use the hay because it smelled BAD and you're right, they eat it, tooo.....and if the cage is in the house, you don't want it to smell. So go with the Kitty Litter. It worked for me.
Also, I noticed with my bunnies that Lettuce made them "watery". I would give mine apples, cantelope, and bananas,,,,,,they LOVED the bananas! Also, they loved Bread and Potato Chips (the salt on them - they're crunchy)
Not the healthiest, but it was a treat.....As far as the hay goes, they do need to eat that because of the "fiber", I just wouldn't want to use it as a litter box filler....
