Our Magical "Mental Health" Western Cruise, March 8-15, 2008

Since we had to have our luggage ready for pick up by 8:00 AM, we were up by 7:00 AM to get packed up. We headed down to breakfast at about 7:45 AM, the lines were a lot longer this morning than the day before. I forgot to mention that there was a cheerleading competition being held that weekend and several of the cheer squads were staying at POFQ. When we returned to our room at 8:30 AM our luggage had already been picked up. :thumbsup2

It was very windy and cool this morning, but we walked around the resort and took some pictures before checking out of our room and waiting in the lobby for the DCL bus to pick us up.

We really liked staying at POFQ. Our room had a great view and was very quiet. I love the theming and the smallness of the resort compared to others on WDW property.

Right around noon, the bus rolled up at the front entrance.

P3080319.jpg

We were all so excited. There were probably 5 or 6 families waiting to board. After showing our ID we were able to board. We were then off to the ship. Our driver took his time because of the high winds, but we were getting frustrated because at least 2 other DCL busses passed us on the way. The driver also took the time to point out possible gator sightings off the road, but none were seen. Finally, over the horizon, the driver made the announcement that we would be able to see the Magic and we did!!

P3080325.jpg

What a beautiful site. I couldn’t stop taking pictures as we neared the port.

Once we arrived at the terminal we were asked to stay on the bus until a DCL cast member came on to talk to us. I think this particular CM had had a bad day because he didn’t make it quick. Other buses that arrived after us were already unloading. Finally we were allowed to enter the terminal, there was probably a 10 minute wait to go through security then it was up the escalator. I sent my DH to take pictures of the model while I checked us in.

P3070070.jpg

It was a painless and relatively quick process when you have all of your documents in order. By the way, we used passports rather than birth certificates which may speed up the process a bit. I caught up with my DH and DD. I had wanted to get her wrist band and pager for the kids programs in the terminal, but the line was extraordinarily long, so we decided to wait until later. It was then time to walk through the Mickey Mouse Ears. I was so excited; I forgot to take a picture. Bad me!! Our KTTW cards were scanned and we headed towards the photographer. We only had to wait for one family ahead of us and it was our turn. She took a picture of our entire family, my DD and then my DH and I. By 2:00 PM we gathered our belongings and walked onto the gang plank and then onto the ship. A crew member asked our name and we were introduced as “The "blahblah" Family, all the way from Arizona.” The atrium erupted in applause. Well at least a dozen or so crew members. This was the first time this day that my eyes would start watering. We were immediately greeted by another crew member who informed us that Parrot Cay had just closed for lunch but that we were welcome to go up to Topsiders. Of course, I had already known this because of the DIS. The first thing we did was head to our stateroom. When we arrived on Deck 7 we were very happy to see that 2 of our suitcases had already been delivered. We opened the door and saw our home away from home for the next 7 nights. It was a beautiful sight. I took some quick pictures before we started crowding it with luggage.

P3080341.jpg

P3080340.jpg

As we entered our room, our neighbors, whom we were cruising with, happened to come down the hall (they had a handicapped stateroom at the aft of the deck) so we got to catch up with them. The basket that “Minnie Mouse” sent my DD was waiting for us as well.

P3080364.jpg

My DD was very excited to get it. We then headed up to lunch.

P3080344.jpg

After lunch we headed to the Promenade Lounge to meet our fellow DISers. We met up with mkmommy (whose DD1 and my DD would end up being BFF before the end of the cruise), Out To Sea Lee, charpie127 and retiredkid (who just happened to be our neighbor for the week). Hi neighbor! :wave2: It was great to meet everybody and we ran into or saw each other every so often on board. Some more than others! We talked for about 20 minutes and then headed back to our rooms to unpack and prepare for the drill. My DD got a little apprehensive about it, but we got her vest on (adult size) and headed down to Animator’s Palette. This drill was quick and easy, and except for the alarm, my DD was fine. It was then time to head up on deck for the Adventures Away party. We found a table and chairs near the family hot tub on the port side of ship to watch the festivities. My DD didn’t want to dance near the stage so we watched and waved our streamers form the back.

P3080375.jpg

P3080352.jpg

P3070092.jpg

It was extremely windy on the top decks. Finally we had the count down to the fabulous horn. This would be the second time that my eyes would get watery. I was so thankful for the opportunity to take this vacation. I immediately ran to deck 10, starboard side to watch us pull away, but alas we weren’t moving and there was nobody waving “good bye” to us with white gloves. However, I couldn’t’ wait any longer as we had the 5:45 PM seating rotation and I had to change clothes for dinner.

Next: Our first night on board.

Great report so far! Anxiously waiting for more! We too are from Chandler, AZ, and we also have booked a night at the POFQ and will probably fly in on Southwest. You have already answered alot of questions I had. I was most concerned with getting to the terminal so late (vs. when it opens) but it looks like the whole process was painless for you. :cool1:

We travel on the Magic in October and are so lookng forward to it. Keep the report coming...popcorn::

Wow, what a small world. The only thing I missed about not getting to the terminal earlier was character photo ops, but there were so many on board that it wasn't a real big deal. The nice thing about getting on the ship later was that we could go straight to our stateroom and not have to lug our carry ons around the ship.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions. You'll love POFQ.

Hi

What a lovely story and love the photos too.

Sorry to heard about your health but I am sure you had a fabulous times.

I look forward to read more story.

Happy Easter everybody.

Our first restaurant was Animator’s Palate.

P3080381.jpg

We sat at a table for 10 with our neighbors (4) and another family of 3 from Toronto who had a 5 year old son. They were very nice and we enjoyed meeting up with them every night. By the end of the cruise, their son and my DD were fast friends and dinner playmates. In fact, my DD became his “Cruise Girlfriend.” Anyway, our server was Ollie from the Philippines and our assistant server was May from Thailand. I cannot say enough great things about these two. They were wonderful with the kids and provided anything that we asked for, which wasn’t an awful lot. It was obvious that the mom from Toronto was not a DIS member and was not as informed about the surprises on the ship as we were. But not to worry, I educated her as best I could.

I was looking forward to watching the show. I was not disappointed. It was interesting to see which panels would change and turn color during the evening. The panels were actually synced to the music from the movie they depicted. It was very enjoyable. After the show, the servers came out and did a parade around the dining room.

During the middle of dinner we all finally started to feel the ship moving. It was quite exciting. Evidently they were delayed by late arrivals due to weather delays from the east coast. By the way, I took Bonine for the first few days and had absolutely no feeling of sea sickness. It was great!

After dinner we went by the Oceaneer’s Club to get my DD”s wrist band and pager. She stayed while we wandered around a bit and then headed to the “Let the Magic Begin” show at the Walt Disney Theater. We met Christiaan, our cruise director. We would see him a lot around the ship and at the beginning of every production. He was great and made funny announcements. He also does a pretty good impersonation of Sean Connery. Daylight Savings Time (a foreign concept to those of us in AZ who don’t ever change our clocks) was to commence on Sunday. Christiaan told us not to change our clocks that night and that we would stay on “Ship Time” while in Key West. He said we would have a lot of clock changes already without having to worry about this one. Afterwards, we picked DD up from the club and headed to the room to finish unpacking and go to bed. When we got our stateroom, our DD’s bed had been made and the animal of the day was a lobster or was it a scorpion? Not really sure. Our DD loved getting these towel animals every night.

I'm really enjoying your report. I especially love hearing from newbies. I've cruised the Wonder twice but I'll be cruising on the Magic this fall (a DD just after the dry dock). I can't wait!!!!

Anxiously awaiting another installment.

Happy easter!

I love reading Newbie reports too, especially since that's what I'll be when I go in October. Great report so far, and loving the pictures!

We woke up and headed to Parrot Cay at 8:00 AM for Mickey’s Island Jam character breakfast.

P3090440.jpg

We had a good breakfast and the characters (Goofy, Pluto, Lilo, Stitch, Chip & Dale, Minnie and Mickey) came out and did dance routines and danced around the room. Our serving staff made fun hats out of our napkins. Our favorite was goofy’s hat. After we ate, the characters came out and did a conga line throughout the restaurant and invited the kids to come with them. It was fun and we were able to get some photos with the characters, but they didn’t come to the tables like more traditional character breakfasts. That was okay though, as we had plenty of opportunities to have one and one with the characters during the entire week.

P3090418.jpg

P3090420.jpg

P3090422.jpg
P3090436.jpg

The day was partly cloudy and very windy, but that didn’t stop DD from enjoying the Mickey Pool and slide. The water was a bearable 86 degrees, but the wind was a bit on the chilly side. The pools were practically deserted. This would probably be the most deserted they were for the entire week. She even went over and tried the goofy pool. There were never more than six kids at a time in either pool all morning.

P3090445.jpg

We hung out on deck 9, ate lunch at Topsiders and snacked on delicious fresh fruit and soft serve ice-cream until we docked at Key West and it was time to get off. I had heard that Key West can be very warm, so I was very happy that it was overcast and cool.

P3090448.jpg

P3090453.jpg

The ashore time was approximately 1:00 PM ship’s time, meaning 2:00 PM Key West time.

We didn’t book any excursions for this port. After we disembarked the ship, we headed towards the Old Town Trolley desk and booked a tour. This area seemed to be the center of activity.

P3090460.jpg

P3080109.jpg

P3080114.jpg

P3090459.jpg

We had a very informative driver, but what was nice was that we could get off at one of their 12 stops and be picked up at any other. We rode through the harbor area and bar area and got off before Hemingway’s house to walk to the Southernmost Point.

P3090470.jpg

P3090461.jpg

P3090476.jpg

We had the obligatory picture taken. We ran into Out To Sea Lee there as well with her family. We then caught the trolley for a continued tour of the city. After the tour was over, DD and I went to the Aquarium where we got to touch a shark.

P3090496.jpg

P3090500.jpg

P3090501.jpg

As aquariums go, it was pretty run of the mill and nothing too exciting. They supposedly had a lot of sharks and they were supposed to feed them as part of the tour, but they must have been hiding because we only saw 2 and they weren’t very hungry. We then walked around a bit, did some shopping and headed back to the ship for dinner. I wanted to stop and get some frozen key lime pie on a stick but, once again, I was out voted. Because it was overcast, the sunset was not as spectacular as promised. We only saw part of it through the portholes at Parrot Cay during dinner. I didn’t feel too disappointed as we have beautiful sunsets here at home. I ordered the Key Lime Margarita, it was delicious. Again, during dinner, we started to feel the ship move as we headed back out to sea.

DD wanted to attend Goofy’s PJ Party that evening, so immediately after dinner we went up to the stateroom to get her in her PJ’s and down to Oceaneer’s Lab where the party was to be held at 7:15 PM. My DH and I then wandered around the ship, checked out the spa and workout area, watched the Pilot get off the ship and leave in the Pilot Boat, bought some pictures at Shutters, shopped and hung out at Diversions until it was time to pick DD up.

P3090519.jpg

P3090521.jpg

P3090525.jpg

Once the kids were back at the Oceaneer’s Club, we popped in to see how DD was doing and she was dancing it up at the glow party so we didn’t get her. I hate to say she was none too happy that we had waited. We got an earful that she did not have fun and did not want to go back. Well, I had news for her. She had to go back at least once so her dad and I could go to Palo for brunch the next day. Then we were off to bed. Our towel animal was an elephant.

Your trip report is fantastic!:thumbsup2 Your pictures are unbelievable! I can't wait to read more. . .

You've got great pics! I can't wait to hear more of your story.

Is this the breakfast that you are assigned during the week?

And, we are thinking of booking this tour in Key West. Does it stop at the Southernmost Point of the US? I know there are two that you can do. Some don't allow you to hop on and off... but others do.

Do you recommend it? We have never been to Key West and I'm wondering if we should book this or just spend the whole day strolling. We are pretty good walkers and I wonder if we can hit all the same stops by foot. I'm wondering what your comments are...

You are assigned the character breakfast on the first sea-day morning after your first visit to Animator's Palate. Since we ate the first night there, our breakfast was Sunday morning (DCL considers this a sea-day on the Western).

Do not do the Old Towne Trolley tour through DCL. You will not be able to get off the bus. If you do it on your own, you can get off at any one of 12 stops (http://www.trustedtours.com/store/Old-Town-Trolley-Key-West-C220.aspx) which includes the Southernmost Point. It was very interesting as you get a pretty good history of the island without a lot of walking. If it's a hot day, you probabaly won't want to walk the entire island. Plus, you really only get a few hours on the island itself to explore.

Today was our first sea day. Where was the time going? I was excited to have an entire day at sea. It was a beautiful day. The wind had died down and it was warmer. After we got dressed, we went up to Topsiders for breakfast. The Danish were amazing. My DD’s favorites were the donuts and bagels. This was to become her staple breakfast for the week. Well at least for DD, my DH and I were having brunch today so we didn’t eat much. At 10:00 AM we checked DD in to the Oceaneer’s Lab for cookie making while we went to Palo.

P3100528.jpg

Palo was everything everybody said it was. :thumbsup2 Before we were seated, we were given a complimentary glass of champagne. Tomas from Czechoslovakia was our server. He was very nice; he gave us a tour of the buffet and explained our menu items to us. My DH was in heaven with the seafood buffet, he had waited so long to get good scallops. They also had jumbo shrimp, crab legs, lobster claws, oysters on the shell, prossciuto wrapped asparagus, artichoke salad, salmon and much more. My favorite part of the buffet was all of the different breads. :worship: They had danishes, croissants, puffed pastry, sticky buns and stolin bread with fresh berries and real whipped cream. My DH ordered the veal while I ordered pepperoni pizza. Both were very good. It was then time to hit the dessert table. (Not like I had any room, but they were very small, right?) The desserts were amazing. I had an éclair and several different Pettit Fours. They had to roll us out. No sooner did we get back to our room to change clothes, the pager went off. Our DD wanted us to pick her up. Well at least her timing is impeccable. Unfortunately, that was to be her last time at the kids club. :sad2:

We took DD up to Pinocchio’s for pizza for lunch. I had been given a free spa treatment, so I went forward (like my ship speak?) to the spa to make an appointment for a reflexology foot massage. They had an opening at 3:15 PM that afternoon. Afterwards, we saw Goofy by the pool and got his autograph. :goofy: We went to the matinee showing of “Golden Mickeys’. We really enjoyed going to the matinees. They were not crowded at all and we usually got to sit very close and in the middle of the theater. DD”s new found BFF (mkmommy’s DD1) was interviewed on the red carpet and transmitted inside on the screens in the theater. :mic: DD was very excited to see her. The show was very entertaining. DD’s favorite part was the Cruella De Ville number.

P3100539.jpg

P3100545.jpg

P3100546.jpg

P3100554.jpg

Once again, at the end, my eyes got watery. I just love Disney animated classics and this show hit on almost all of them.

After the show I dropped off DD with her dad and I headed to the spa for my treatment. Unfortunately, due to my chemo treatments, I could not have a massage, so Wendy, from South Africa, gave me a light facial. It was very refreshing and I glowed for formal night.

Tonight was formal night so we got all dressed up early and headed down to the atrium to get pictures with all of the cool backdrops and Captain Thom before the lines got long. We also enjoyed free Mai Tai’s at the Captain’s Reception. The drinks were delicious! :drinking1 DD and I also went to get her picture with Daisy Duck at Preludes.

P3100580.jpg

While we waited and there was no one around, I took advantage and took some pictures of the cute window displays outside Mickey’s Mate and Treasure Ketch.

P3100570.jpg

P3100571.jpg

P3100572.jpg

P3100574.jpg

We ate dinner at Parrot Cay again tonight. Evidently, DCL is trying some new rotations out before their Mexican Riviera cruises. Dinner was excellent. After having all those desserts at Palo, my DH told Ollie that he was going to skip dessert. Well, any deserving DISer knows not to let this opportunity pass, so I reiterated with Ollie that “He wanted “nothing” for dessert, right?” :rolleyes1 Ollie got the message loud and clear and delivered exactly what he wanted, “Nothing.” It was very funny. Nobody knew what was going to happen but me. It was a classic moment.

P3100563-1.jpg

After dinner my DD went with our neighbors to Studio Sea for the Family Dance Party and DH and I went to Rockin Bar D to see Max Winfrey perform. He did juggling and was quite entertaining and funny. He actually juggled while bouncing on a pogo stick. Amazing!

After the show, we collected our DD and we went to the Buena Visa Theater to see the 8:15 PM showing of “Enchanted” with our neighbors. Here’s a hint, make sure that you go to Deck 9 for drinks or bring water with you. I forgot, and wish I had brought something to drink. Anyway, the seats at the theater were a little tight for my 6’ 2” DH, so he took advantage of some time alone and went to deck 4 to read his book. The movie was very delightful and DD loved it. :thumbsup2

After a very full day at sea, it was then time for bed. Our towel animal tonight was a sea turtle. Unfortunately, DD started taking it apart before I got the picture, so it’s a little messed up.

P3100586.jpg

Next: Grand Cayman

Today was Grand Cayman. This was our DD’s first time to a foreign country. I got up and caught the sunrise and watched the Magic anchor and all of the other cruise ships come in off shore.

P3110591.jpg

We also watched all of the tender boats come out. :boat: The first tender was supposed to be at 7:45 AM. Some ships had their own tender boats that they lowered from their decks. It was breakfast at Topsiders again. We headed to the Promenade Lounge at 9:15 AM to gather for our Atlantis Submarine excursion. It was warmer today, but the wind was up and black clouds loomed on the horizon. Once we handed in our disclaimer form and got our Pumbaa stickers we were led down toward deck 1 to disembark and board the tender. Tendering was a very easy process and we enjoyed getting a view of our beautiful ship from the gorgeous blue water and seeing all of the other 6 cruise ships in port that day. We also saw a few pirate ships that would later be firing on the Magic.

P3100162.jpg

P3110007.jpg

P3110010.jpg

Once we made it to the pier we were led off and down the streets of Georgetown to where we would be taken out to our submarine. We were looking forward to this excursion as none of us are divers and we wanted to see the reef without having to get wet.

P3110014.jpg

P3110012.jpg

P3110016.jpg

We boarded yet another tender boat and made our way not too far off shore to where the submarine was just coming to the surface.

P3110017.jpg

P3110019.jpg

Getting on the sub was about the same as getting on the submarine ride at Disneyland. Very narrow stairs to the seating area where you shared portholes. We sat on the starboard side. Due to the weather the Grand Cayman’s had experienced the last couple of days, the water had been stirred up and was pretty cloudy. We saw fish but not as clearly as I would have liked. We dove down to 100 feet and saw different coral formations and different schools of fish and the infamous Cayman Drop Off. :fish:

P3110028.jpg

We were probably under water for about 40 minutes before we resurfaced to be picked up by our boat. It started raining as we headed back to Georgetown. :umbrella: We stopped at the Tortuga Rum Cake store and tried some rum cake but it was too strong for our tastes. We wanted to check out Margaritaville because of their rooftop pool. We walked in and it was very loud, although the pool was pretty empty.

P3110039.jpg

P3110040.jpg

We decided to head back to the ship and walked back down the main street towards the tender boats. It had stopped raining so hard by now. We didn’t really see anything else that grabbed us so we headed back to the ship for lunch at Topsiders. It’s always nice to be welcomed home!

P3110047.jpg

P3110049.jpg

After lunch my DH was comfortable relaxing in the stateroom so DD and I headed down to deck 4 for reading and shuffle board. She shuffled, I read. She soon got bored :bored: with that and went back to the stateroom. After awhile I collected her and we went to see the 3:00 PM showing of Twice Charmed. DD met up with her new BFF (mkmommmy’s DD1) and sat in the front row to watch the show. The show was amazing. Franco was fantastic. I very much enjoyed all of the shows on the Magic, they were definitely quality shows.

P3110058.jpg

P3110066.jpg

P3110077.jpg

After the show I went to play some Pin Trading Jackpot Bingo in the Promenade Lounge. Now, I don’t normally play bingo, and am not much a gambler, but it seemed like a fun way to pass an hour before getting ready for dinner. I didn’t win anything, but it was fun. Bailey, Naomi and Shaka were the hostesses. I loved their British accents. They were a lot of fun. Meanwhile, DH and DD were getting ready for dinner. Tonight we would be dining at Lumiere’s.

P3110080.jpg

Unfortunately, our neighbor’s DD came down with a temp so only our DNW and other DNDD(15) came down to dinner. In fact, it was just the 5 of us as our other table mates chose to eat at Palo that night. Dinner was very good. After dinner, DD and I went out to get Princess Minnie Mouse’s autograph.

P3110086.jpg

At 7:30, DD had a play date with her new BFF. We first met on Deck 4 overlooking the atrium and decided that the portholes on Beat Street would be a less crowded and a good place to play. The girls had a great time playing with their stuffed toys and climbing in and out of portholes. :chat: They played for about a half hour before it was time to go. On the way back to our room, we stopped by Shutter’s and selected our formal night pictures. I can’t seem to recall what else we did that night before we went to bed. We had to set our clocks back 1 hour. Our towel animal was a sting ray.

Wendy

It is so fun to read your report, but it does make me realize we missed so much, we do need to go back:rotfl2: It also helps with the post vacation depression. We got more snow yesterday and would love to be able to see something besides snow.

We never got any rain on Seven Mile beach, it did get dark and there was a drop and everyone started to pack up, but other than a drop no rain.

I like everyone else loves your pictures and wish I had taken more, how many pictures did you end up with?

I took about 1300 pictures and my DH took 256. And, there are still things I wish I had pictures of that I missed. Oh well, next time! :rolleyes1

Glad your enjoying my report. It's amazing how 2 people can be on the same ship and have 2 totally separate experiences. I guess that's what makes cruising so much fun. ;)

Love your report and I hope all is going well with your health. I'm in the middle of dealing with the same issues, I had a fibregenoma removed last Friday that luckily is bengin, there is a long history of Breast Cancer on my Biological mother's side and she was 37 when diagnosed and lost the battle at 42. Next week I go to have the BRCA testing done to see if I possibly carry the gene.

My thoughts and Prayers are with you for a speedy recovery.
