Trip Report: First DVC Trip!

Where: OKW
When: June 27 – 30, 2004
Who: DW- Sherri, DS- Matthew (age 2 ½) and Me- Doug

We couldn’t pass up the amazingly low airfare of $49 each way so in May we called and found availability at OKW for a studio for three nights. We own at SSR and have a trip planned for December, but this was a great excuse to visit WDW (it’s been over two years since we’ve been and our son’s very first visit!).

We arrived at OKW at about 12 noon. We received our first “welcome home” greeting. We often joked about the “welcome home” greeting and our 2 year old pick up on this. Each time we entered our room we — DW and I — greeted each other with “welcome home” and kissed. Our son decided he should do likewise and he said “welcome home” and kissed each of us! LOL

We had a selection of about 4 rooms all on either the 2nd or 3rd floor. We selected room 1620 in building 16, second floor. We liked the proximity to HH. We chose wisely as our room was ready!

We loved the room. It was comfortable and clean. The theme at OKW is wonderful and DW while hesitant to stay in an “old” resort, was pleasantly surprised. We decided that OKW will always be an option for us!

We had thought about going to Typhoon Lagoon, but since pool hoping was available for just our first day, we decided it would be a great opportunity to visit SSR! We called and got the all clear and drove over. No problem getting past security.

We loved the pool at SSR. Our 2 year old had his first experience in a pool and he loved every bit of it. The zero entry area was particularly enjoyable for him. The slide was great and DW and I enjoyed alternating trips down. DS loved watching us come down the slide. He also enjoyed the little slide and the springs with Donald.

I was concerned that the pool was too small for such a large resort, but I compared the capacity size of the OKW pool and SSR and guess what: the capacity at SSR is 100 people and at OKW it is 102! Both are large resorts (or will be) and both have a similar sized pool. We loved the pool at SSR and consider to be one the top Disney on site pools we've visited (we’ve never been to SAB!).

At SSR we were VERY disappointed in the Artists Palate. There was very little selection and we would have a hard time finding something for our two year old to eat. We just picked up a few snack items but I don't think we'll be eating there very often if ever. This is an area I feel DVC needs to address. There appears to be many buildings with room for expansion and I suspect they will fine tune this feature – especially if they get feedback from members.

We had a great evening at Downtown Disney with dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s. We drove to/from Downtown Disney for each visit.

Back at OKW, the bus service was good and reliable. HH was always the last stop. Our room was equidistant between Miller Road bus stop and HH, so we used the flexibility to meet our needs.

We didn’t try Olivia’s — we don’t generally do table service at the resort — but we did try Goods to Go. The hamburgers and hot dogs were tasty, the fruit cup was large and very fresh. We enjoyed the food and would eat there again. We did get some groceries and had breakfast in our room each day.

The parks were great! We noticed that the crowds were significantly bigger than past June visits, but with fast pass we had little wait for most attractions. The one that did not have Fast Pass that we wish did was the Playhouse Disney show over at Disney-MGM Studios. Our son loved visiting the characters and even rode on Goofy’s Barnstormer — twice!

It was a great trip and we are so glad that we joined DVC. Special thanks to all of the wonderful folks on this board who have given advice and offered your opinions!

our family will be at SSR this coming Aug..the picture of your son is soooo cute..he looks like he is having a great time..are there life jackets at SSR as my 5 year old grandson does not swim yet unlike the 9 year old who I swear was born in the water! thanks for the heads up about the food court..Marianne :wave2:

Thanks for sharing your report. Glad the first trip home went so well!

By the way if you liked the burgers at Goods to Go, you will just love them in Olivia's. One of the best burgers on property.

The old DI had a wonderful first class sit down restaurant. Too bad it did not survive the renovation. They must want you all to go to DD to dine. Enjoy SSR this December!

A note about the pool capacity, OKW has a total of 4 pools, the themed pool being the largest (where they will add the slide early next year), but the others are quite nice as well.

Glad to hear your first DVC trip was a hit! Thanks for the trip report with lots of interesting observations. Your son does look like he'll be quite happy at SSR. I also think the "welcome home" kiss should become a family tradition. ;) That's just too cute.

You should let DVC know your thoughts on Artist Palate and suggestions for what you would like to see them offer. You're right that they do take comments into consideration. Especially this early in the game, they may want to know such things so they can "fine tune".

Thanks for the report! Hopefully they will expand the food court at SSR or add a full service restaurant. When we stay at OKW, we sometimes pop over to POFQ's food court (by car).

DVC definitely listen to its customer/guests.

so complaint about the food court.

OKW does have 4 pools - but no slide - we will see next year when the slide opens up how the crowds change.

Thanks for taking the time to write a report! I'm so glad you enjoyed your vacation and had a chance to swim at SSR. the picture of your adorable son is great!

THANKS AGAIN!

It was good to read your report. We are going to OKW in October. We tried to get into BCV or BWV, but as you can imagine we are a little too late. We have heard a lot of good things about OKW, I have been nervous since it is an older resort. Thanks again for your report::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo

Thanks for the report! What kind of view did your studio have? Lots of people in the Miller Road area have said they had really nice views, what was yours and how did you like it?

I did not see life jackets, we took our own with us. A call to MS might answer that question. The pool was great. I'm sure your family will love it.

We were on the very end of the building in a studio (don't think I mentioned that earlier!). The balcony was very nice. We mostly saw vegetation and a bit of the golf course.

DVC resorts have complimentary lifevests for guests.

Don't ever worry about staying at OKW because of a fear of its age. We are at Disney (thank God) and the property is maintained to disney standards. The Rooms are the largest of all the DVC resorts. The only draw back to me is the location as I'm a BWV person BUT if my home resort isn't available I would go to OKW in a heart beat it is a wonderful resort.

Doug, thanks for the detailed trip report about OKW & SSR. I like your new family ritual upon entering the unit - Welcome Home!

Your family ritual is awesome. And your son is adorable. Sounds like you had a great time. We leave in one day. Cant wait to jump in SSR's pool. Thanks for the report.

What a wonderful picture of your son having fun! Thank you for your trip report.
