I'm going to be working on this in chunks, I think- but wanted to get it out there before I forget all the details !

This was our first trip to Disney- DH and I had been planning this trip for
almost a year with our 4.5 year old son and 16 month old daughter. I spent hours pouring over the Disboards and trying to plan out restaurants for our stay. We aren't huge foodies, but we generally try to eat healthy and so this was our excuse to go a little wild after a few months of pretty strict watching our diets. Before you get to the end of our report, you'll be surprised that we didn't gain any weight on our trip- must have been all that walking!

We flew from Atlanta to MCO on a 1010 Saturday am flight- we stayed with family the night before who drove us to the airport. This was not only my first Disney trip, but my first airplane flight and my first flight with kids! From the busiest airport in the US. Of course. I had a cup of coffee at the airport and shared a banana and a cliff bar with my little one. We were too overwhelmed to eat much more and a concourse change meant extra stress right before our flight took off. We made it on, got settled, and our short flight was over! We were in Orlando! Headed down to the Magical express check- in and hopped on our bus to the Poly!!! Disney here we come! As you can see from this picture, we were pretty exhausted but SO ready for a vacation.

And the eating starts!

Here was our park plan and ADR's. I'll add in the counter services we ate at as we go along!

Sat- resort day after arrival
Sun- MK- Crystal Palace B
Mon- Epcot-Garden Grill- D
Tues- DHS- Hollywood and Vine L (ended up cancelling and eating at Grand Floridian Café for dinner!)
Weds - Animal Kingdom- Tusker House B/L (1045 res),Ohana D
Thurs-Epcot-ViaNapoli D
Fri-MK- 1900 Park Fare D (ended up cancelling this one).

We had the dining plan - yay for free dining in September. DD obviously was eating off our plates so it made it seem even more free (for a 16 month old child, she can eat more than our son).

After arrival at the Poly, we got checked in and settled, picked up our stroller from bell services, ect. Pretty much collapsed in our rooms but we were STARVING!

Headed to Captain Cook's!

As we were new to the DDP, we got a bit overwhelmed wanting to make sure we did things right. Fortunately the CM was very helpful standing near the entrance so we were able to move right through with no problem!

DH and I both picked the Aloha Pork Sandwich. I ordered with fries- he ordered the chips.

The sandwich was great! I had read about it and it was one of our must-haves! we ended up having it again during our trip! Basically a pretzel style bun piled with tasty lean shredded pork, topped with a Asian slaw and cucumber/tomatoes. It was HUGE! The fries and chips were crispy, nothing unique.

DS got the cheeseburger, I don't have a pic but it was a pretty non descript child size cheeseburger. He and DD shared this , but he didn't eat much. He always orders a cheeseburger and rarely eats it. Life of a 4 year old! We got DD a milk and the three of us filled our mugs (we got bottled waters to take back to our room as our drinks for DH and I). We found this very helpful as a strategy - whenever we were at a TS meal, we usually got a milk as the kid's drink and then one of us drank water and let DS get something with one of our drinks. At the resort we pretty much always just got bottled drinks and took them back to the fridge since we just used our refillable mugs.

Time for dessert! We got an applesauce as DS's dessert and then shared the two adult desserts between the three of us

DS/DH selected the mickey ears cupcake and I got a red velvet.

I wish I had gotten a better pic of Connor's cupcake. It was super cute!- Mickey ears made from 2 oreos, and red sprinkles. The top dome was basically a chocolate mousse with a chocolate ganache topping. The cake was a regular cake and none of us ended up eating more than a bite. The red velvet cupcake seemed similar to the chocolate one in taste and texture, just more red in color . Since I'm from the South, I'm used to really good red velvet! The frosting was creamy and sweet and I could def taste the cream cheese in it. Again, not the best cream cheese frosting I've ever had. We had a bite or two of that one as well and tossed our leftovers.

Our first park day, we had reservations for crystal Palace at 8 40 prior to park opening. We arrived at the park around 830 via the monorail and were able to easily enter the park and walked down gorgeous main street! We checked in to crystal palace, got our pager and waited just a few minutes before it was time.

We walked into Crystal Palace and were seated just in time for Tigger to arrive to our table. We loved all the characters there, although we felt a little rushed with it being our first park day. The food was pretty good in general- There was a cold bar, and all the "regular breakfast foods" . This was a pretty nice tradition to start and I think we'll continue making it our first MK day favorite- wonderful to be in the park before rope drop.

DD was pretty obsessed with the mickey waffles from the start

I tried to eat a bunch of fruit to counterbalance all the scrambled eggs, bacon, and all the other goodies I had. DS had orange juice, I had coffee and DH had water. One thing I did not like was the "Pooh's Breakfast Lasagna". With the layers of custard, pancakes, and other stuff, it was just not for me! Not to worry though, plenty of yummy food otherwise!

after a busy morning, We stopped in Frontierland for this:

The mickey pretzel was quite tasty- we all shared bites of it. I am pretty sure at some point we picked up some bottled waters in Fantasyland.
After riding a few more rides, we shared a mickey ice cream sandwich and another ice cream (the one with the orange outside) outside of Big Thunder Mtn- No pics, sadly!

After the parade, we headed back to the Poly to swim, and rest and then back to the Park for the evening. We had dinner at Columbia Harbour House. Again, I have no pics -

I had the salmon, broccoli and couscous- . The salmon was tasty , I sort of mixed all my food together b/c the couscous was pretty bland. I eat broccoli a lot, it was plain steamed broccoli . DH got the fish basket- he liked it but I didn't try it- he's one to soak it is malt vinegar! DS got mac and cheese and DD ate most if it- They shared the yogurt and fruit we got for our desserts.

I liked CHH because it was truly sort of quiet and a great place to unwind after a long day. We came out of the restaurant at the perfect time to catch the electrical light parade and afterwards we headed back to the Poly.

That night, DH took DS down to Captain Cook's for a late night ice cream treat- First dole whip!!!! Since I wasn't there, no pics, but more to come later!!!!.......

great start - looking forward to more. And you are very brave making your first flight with your children :)

Following! I love the Mickey pretzel and had to show dh as soft pretzels are his fav!

The aloha pork sandwich is one of my favs!!

monday: Eating In Epcot!

I confess that I have been a busy girl and have not had a chance to get back to this thread in a week or two! But i'm back......

Tuesday we had big plans for Epcot. It started out so well, we had a yummy counter service breakfast at Captain Cook's (Polynesian). I have to confess that we became addicted to that place! Glad it is so many miles from home or I might gain about 100 lbs a year !

For breakfast, we decided to get some things to share- which was our basic CS strategy in all of Disney. We love to eat, but we also were trying to not come home from WDW without fitting into our pants, and wanted to make the most of trying different places. That morning, We got a breakfast sandwich for DH, Croissant Breakfast Sandwich - Scrambled Eggs, bacon, and Cheddar Cheese on a croissant- He thought it was quite tasty and snarfed it down :) I got a kid's breakfast scramble which consisted of egg whites, little ham pieces and cheese. DS had the kid's French toast and we got fruit and yogurt with the kids's meals.

As for the egg white scramble, Honestly it was sort of blah, but was the protein my body needed to go along with my TONGA TOAST. Yum! I got the toast only, which was just 5.19 for a giant piece of tasty bread stuffed with bananas, then deep fried and dipped in cinnamon sugar. It was super super yum! One of those things that I could eat every day and am still fondly in remembrance of. I only shared a tiny piece with ds and dh (and didn't have a chance to take pics :)

In fact, I found this recipe online, and I just might have to make it one of these days... http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2012/08/08/disney-recipe-tonga-toast-from-kona-cafe-in-disney-world/

Off to EPCOT. We had an early dinner reservation at Garden Grill so we were thinking we would do a few snacks around the world showcase to hold us over.

Well. This was one of those days when "when it rains, it pours" was fitting. It rained like a monsoon that day and we ended up missing out on pretty much the entire world showcase. This wasn't the typical Disney rain, it was horribly drenching, everything packed up and closed up, rain. So....we made it to Mexico. We basically decided to make a detour for a quick meal more out of frustration and needing a place to sit down (we spent over an hour in the Duffy store just biding our time hoping it would calm down if that gives a description). Enough about that...

La Cantina de San Angel
Mexico - World Showcase - Epcot

We shared 2 meals -

Tacos de Carne - smoked beef brisket tacos served on fresh handmade corn tortillas with Pico de Gallo, lime and corn tortilla chips

- these were really tasty- basically chunks of brisket on mini corn tortillas, served with chips. It came with 3 so we each got one.

Nachos - corn tortilla chips with ground beef, nacho cheese, fresh tomatoes, jalapenos, black beans, and sour cream

- this was sort of eh- basically chips with the orange nacho type cheese. We love queso and regular melted cheese nachos, but if we hadn't been hungry , this probably would not have been eaten. it did have a TON of cheese and other toppings.

Dinner was as planned at the Garden Grill. Our TA convinced us to try this restaurant as it is one of her favorites. If you are going to do this dinner , you absolutely MUST ride "Living with the Land" which travels under the restaurant and you can see lots of food that you'll be eating in the greenhouses and even watch the fish swimming!

This restaurant was neat, it rotates, really slowly through the different environments. I know some people say they get motion sickness , but honestly it moves REALLY slowly. Not something we could even tell until you looked up and the wall looked different than last time you saw it. Picture a gigantic carousel with the kitchen in the center surrounded with tables where the horses would be. The very outside wall is what changes for you as the restaurant moves.

Dinner started out with this tasty salad....... Harvest Salad. I can't remember exactly what the dressing was like- I feel like it was a buttermilk ranch? it wasn't heavy and was pre-tossed. Topped with lots of yumminess as pictured. They also brought rolls which I didn't try but DH is a big roll eater so of course he had them. Nothing super exciting, but they had maple butter.

Then they started bringing the main course!Dinner at Garden Grill is family style- all you can eat- So they bring a starter platter, and then keep bringing more upon request. There are three meats and sides, which change seasonally and often.

ry%3D400

The night we ate there, we had tilapia, beef and turkey breast accompanied by Roasted veggies, Mashed potatoes and dressing. It was all super tasty and fresh. We ended up getting another portion of beef because it was just so good.

They also bring out a kid's platter :
ry%3D480
- chicken legs, mac and cheese, broccoli and sweet potato fries! I have to confess that I ate some of all this too! My DD LOVED the mac and cheese- we got another big bowl of it to the table after she finished the small bowl. She's a big eater!
ry%3D400

This is a character meal, so we got to meet Farmer Mickey, Chip and Dale and Pluto
ry%3D400
ry%3D400

After we stuffed ourselves with all the tasty foods, dessert arrived! They brought both an "adult" and "kid" version.

ry%3D400
Berry harvest skillet dessert with vanilla whipped cream

ry%3D400
and these tasty cupcakes with chocolate frosting!

In general , we really loved Garden Grill. One thing I really liked about it was that although it was a character meal, it was not a buffet and we got to sit down more than in the usual character buffets which tend to be sort of exhausting with 2 young kids! The food was all very fresh and tasty and we could get more if we wanted it so it was a great place to plan for a filling dinner. Dinner includes non-alcoholic beverages of choice as well. The only thing that I didn't like is that the tables are sort of small for a family of 4 with all that food! We would dine there again for sure! Yum! I also loved how it tied in to the Land ride below the restaurant.

Tuesday!

We made a sort of last minute decision to do another Magic Kingdom day so we ended up cancelling Hollywood and vine....

We made it to rope drop and were the first people in Main Street Bakery that morning. SO fun to walk down main street at park opening!!

Dh had a breakfast sandwich (ham and cheddar) and DS and I both got breakfast pastries and bananas to share with DD. I got a blueberry scone...which was ok, not my favorite... I should have gotten a muffin :) Or the chocolate chip pound cake that DS had . it was really yum! After we finished our food, we started our day...

DSC_0571.jpg
from the WDW blog....the pastry case. There wasn't really a lot of places to eat in there, mostly just a few standing height tables which fill quickly. We ate standing at the window.

Here is DS enjoying a frappuccino in Cinderella's castle on the way to Fantasyland. Talk about good times!

I'll come back to update with our last minute dinner reservation for that night....
