Our Double Fantasy - back to back July 14-28, 2012 - pictures added

Day at Sea
We started out with Palo brunch. It was good to see Dragan and Gabi again. I had more of the wonderful almond croissants and eggs benedict - YUM! We also took our bottle of champagne. Gabi asked if we'd like orange juice and he'd make mimosas for us. This was terrific and we finished the bottle.

After lunch we had to hurry down to Skyline for our 1st mixology class. We had alot of fun. With all we had to eat and now so much to drink we didn't do much in the afternoon. Just a relaxing day.

Dinner was at Animator's and Crush had a conversation with DS. DS was thrilled to hear "Hey Dude in the green shell."

After dinner DH & I went to the Buena Vista theater to see The Help. Loved the book and the movie was good too. After that it was up to deck 11 for pizza and then off to bed. Tomorrow is Grand Cayman and a big excursion day.

Grand Cayman

We booked our own excursion with Native Way. The last time we were in Grand Cayman we booked with them and had a wonderful time. That time we did the island tour, turtle farm and sting ray city. This time we did the Starfish, Sting ray City, and coral garden snorkel.

Grand Cayman is a tender port, our excursion was scheduled for at 10:45 am. DCL said the 1st tender would be at 10:45 am. So we went down to Animator's Palette early hoping to get on the 1st tender. There was a long line when we got there but luckily we made it on the 1st tender. We were at the pick up location in plenty of time. Once Eldon arrived (the driver for Native Way) he said there was another couple that should be joining us. We waited about 10 minutes and Eldon said he didn't want to keep us waiting any longer and we were off. It's a nice drive to the marina and Eldon was very personable.

We arrived at the boat where we met our captain Andrew and the assistant Andrew. Yes they were both named Andrew! We got our snorkel gear on the boat and Andrew suggested we sit up top with him so up the ladder we went. There are many beautiful homes along the channel. Andrew said many are occupied only a few weeks a year. Must be nice...
dscn0383.jpg

It was about a 20 minute ride to our first stop to see the star fish. Andrew could see them as we approached the area, I couldn't make them out. As soon as we were in the water it was amazing to see. There were many starfish in small area. The water depth was about 10 ft. DS dove down to get a starfish, DH did as well. Andrew brought one up for me to hold. Very cool.

dscn0228.jpg

dscn0257.jpg

We stayed with the starfish for about 30 min then got back into the boat to go to stingray city. As we approached there were other tours there, Andrew was able to find a spot for us and backed into the area. We got our masks and snorkels on - no flippers here - and waited for the Andrews to secure the boat.

dscn0266.jpg

You can see DS's leg as he waited to jump in, the stingrays were waiting for us. I asked Andrew if he thought this hurt the stingrays in any way and he said no, they are free to come and go, if the don't want to be handled the swim away. Everyone feeds the squid which is a natural food for them.

dscn0275.jpg

DS kissing a stingray, this is supposed to be good luck. We stayed with the stingrays for about 45 min. I have to say nothing seemed rushed. When Andrew said it was time to go we were ready and felt satisfied with the stop.

Our next stop was the coral garden. This was very close to the stingrays, only about a 5 min boat ride. You could see all of our stops from each. It's amazing how much there is to see so close to each other.

The coral garden wasn't very big, there were many spots that stretched a long way but Andrew warned us not to go too far because the current was very strong. We didn't need to go far because where he stopped was absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you looked there was something different, when you looked back at where you just were it was different. So many fish, so many different corals. A stingray even swam through for us. This is one spot I could have stayed all day - it was amazing.

Soon we were heading back to the marina. On the way in I noticed a starfish floating so I told Andrew. His reaction really surprised me - he was angry. He stopped the boat and went back to get the starfish. On the way back he saw another one floating. Andrew reached over and got both of them. Andrew said he knew who did this and was very upset. He said another tour operator grabs a starfish and passes it around the boat as they are heading back in. As it gets passed around for pictures, etc. it fills with air. When they are done with it they toss it back in the water. But now it's full of air and floats on top. This will kill them.

When we got back to the marina Andrew told Andrew to empty the fresh water bucket and fill it with sea water. The put the starfish in and massaged them to replace the air with water. Andrew then saw the person who he thought was responsible and had some words with him. I was very impressed with Andrew and his concern for the environment. Eldon was waiting for us with the van to take us back to the ship. This was a wonderful excursion - the best we had all cruise. I can't recommend Native Way enough - they are fabulous. We were the only ones on the excursion which was an added bonus. I appreciate that they took us, they could have canceled, I doubt our fee covered their expenses. If you are going to Grand Cayman, check out Native Way!

dscn0384.jpg

Back on the ship we all took showers and got something to eat. The rest of the afternoon we took it pretty easy, all the snorkeling is tiring. Dinner was in Enchanted Garden. I believe we went to the show that night but I don't remember what it was. Sorry.

next up - Costa Maya Dune Buggy Adventure

I am loving your report! I can't wait for more - hoping to be on the Fantasy next year, and can't hear enough about it until then. :woohoo:

Mixology classes were one of our favorite activities. Love Damian! As soon as we got home we purchased the ingredients for Squished Frogs. Still trying to find the larger shot glasses with flat bottoms. The shot glasses we have at home are not flat inside, kind of ruins the look of the squished frog, still tastes good though!

I'm glad you're enjoying our trip. Let me know if there's anything you want to know about and I haven't mentioned or something you want to see. I took so many pictures I probably would have it.

Costa Maya

This was a new port for us. Our other Western went to Key West, Grand Cayman, Cozumel. The Dream and Fantasy are too big for Key West. I enjoyed Key West and was a little sad we couldn't go back.

Our time in Costa Maya was very short, only a half day. Because of this I booked our excursion through DCL, Dune Buggy and Beach adventure. I'm glad I did that because we got back at 5:25 and the ship was scheduled to leave at 5:30. The pier at Costa Maya is crazy long! They run a tram to get people to shore.

After a briefing by our tour guide we were taken through the shopping area to the dune buggies all liked up waiting for us.
CostaMaya_0010.jpg

Our 1st stop was Mahahaul which is the town by the port of Costa Maya. It took us about 20 minutes to get there and we spent about 30 minutes at this stop. We could use bathrooms, swim, get food or beverage. It was an interesting stop just at the edge of town. There was a lot of damaged houses, the tour guide said about 5 years ago a hurricane hit that wiped everything out. He said they got electricity 4 years ago and potable water just 2 years ago. It was sad to see how people were living.

CostaMaya_0001.jpg

Back in the dune buggies we traveled the Mexican highway (that's what our tour guide called it).
CostaMaya_0012-1.jpg

There was very little to see along this stretch, the jungle/swamp came right up to the road. There was nowhere to pull over if you had car trouble. Occasionally you'd see a driveway but couldn't see what was at the end. We turned off the highway onto a dirt road. It was full of HUGE holes filled with water. The guide slowed us way down to maneuver the dune buggies. We arrived at our beach stop. The building was nice, inside there was snacks set up for us, chips & salsa, fresh fruit, water & soda. Alcohol was available for purchase.
CostaMaya_0013.jpg

Going through the building to get to the beach, this was the view at the door:
CostaMaya_0014.jpg

It was beautiful! The water had a lot of washed up dead sea grass that someone was trying to clean up. Once past that the water was nice (DH & DS went out, I stayed in the lounger). We had about an hour there before getting back in the dune buggies for the ride back. Sadly my camera battery died so I don't have any pictures of the trip back to the ship. We did have to hurry back to the ship, no time to look at the shopping area.

Once back on the ship DS ran ahead to shower and go to our dining rotation. DH & I planned on going to Cabanas because we knew we'd be late. Cabanas is a really nice place to eat for dinner. This is used as a training ground for servers. You can tell they are learning, the pace is choppy and the person in charge was always checking on everything and talking to the servers throughout the meal. Many officers ate here and the hypnotist on board ate there also, which leads me to believe it's where the entertainment takes their meals. The menu is a blend of what's being offered in the main dining rooms.

It was a nice day. Costa Maya was ok, not my favorite port but not my least. That one is next - Cozumel.

Great report so far - wow, back to back 7 nights - I can only Dream of that.

Cozumel

Last time we were here the ship was not able to dock due to hurricane damage the year before. DH went golfing, DS & I did the Atlantis submarine. We didn't care for the submarine, we didn't see that much - it was all blue because we were so deep and they don't use lights. DH said the golf course was ok but not very pretty because of the hurricane damage, all the trees were virtually gone. So this trip we did something different - we went spear fishing. This was also the day of our 25th anniversary, so after spear fishing we would be dining at Remy!

We needed to make our own way to a marina. Finding a taxi wasn't difficult but they make you walk through a mall to get to the taxi stand. Kind of annoying when you're in swim suits, carrying snorkel equipment and towels. I had printed off the instructions to the port and showed them to the taxi driver, he said he knew where it was. Off we went. It was a short ride, about 10 minutes along the coast.

Once we arrived at the marina there was a guard that came to the taxi and we had to show him our reservation then he took us to the boat. Our boat was by far the smallest one in the marina. There was only one other person on the excursion with us, a man who was staying on the island. None of us had any previous spear fishing experience. When I made the reservation I was asked many questions and one was experience, I said we had none. That was not a problem, they would teach us. I also read all the reviews on Trip Advisor, it was one of the top rated excursions so I felt confident in choosing this adventure.

Soon we were off. There were 2 guides and captain. Once we arrived at our 1st dive location one of the guides went over how to use the spear gun and what kind of fish it's ok to shoot. They had a chart with pictures. He said that the more colorful the fish the worst they tasted. Our main target are Trigger fish, snapper, and barracuda.
SpearfishinginCozumel.jpg

The 1st dive spot was about 15 feet deep. That was fine for DS & DH, I was not spearfishing, just taking pictures. DS took a couple of shots but didn't catch anything. He was in heaven - he LOVES to fish!
SpearfishinginCozumel_0015.jpg

SpearfishinginCozumel_0017.jpg

No fish were caught at this spot so we got back into the boat and went to the next stop. This stop was 40 feet deep - why they would take newbies here we do not understand. No one, other than the guides were able to get down far enough. You have to get within 10 feet of the fish in order to shoot. DS tired so hard to get down that far that he ended up with a nose bleed. The guide got 2 fish at this location. Finally we got back into the boat and we to the 3rd and final stop.

This was about 20 feet deep, much more manageable for the guests. The difficulty with this stop was the current. It was so strong that we didn't have to kick at all - we were just pushed along. The guides warned that if you waited until you were above your target you were too late, the current would take you past the fish. This was very true. DS tried several times to get a barracuda but the current was too strong for him. A guide finally got one. We were close to the end of this dive when DS came up close to me. The bottom of his snorkel mask was full of blood. I told him he was done - no more diving. He was not happy with me but too bad, I wasn't going to have him damage something trying to get a fish.

Back in the boat we headed back to the marina. Everyone got a good look at the fish caught by the guides.
SpearfishinginCozumel_0018.jpg

Once back at the marina the real fun began. We got all of our stuff off the boat and I asked the guide how we get a taxi back to the ship. He said "just walk down that road and you'll come out by the highway. When a taxi comes by flag it down." I laughed and said, "really, how do we get a taxi?" He repeated his instructions. I was horrified - remember a guard let us in the marina. I thought, great we will be on Nightline - family from Wisconsin missing in Mexico.... Then he said he needed payment, no problem. DH asked for a pen for the travelers checks. The guide said, we don't take travelers checks. Now we have a problem. When I booked our excursions they all had an upcharge for credit cards so we decided to use travelers checks. We had a combination of cash and checks, about half and half. I told him we didn't hav enough cash so what should we do? He pulled out his cell phone, which made me want to say "you couldn't use that to get a taxi out here for us?" and called the owner. I was put on the phone and he told me his emails clearly stated cash only. I replied that his email (which I had with me) did not stat that, it said the price in US dollars. So I asked him what he wanted me to do since we did not have $250 in cash. He said I had 2 options, one was for me or DH to get a taxi back to town, cash the travelers checks and come back to the marina. The other option was to pay extra. Fine, we agreed to $20 extra (we had this for a tip - no tip now). We signed over the checks, gave them our cash and walked down the road. I was not happy. It really seemed that they just didn't want to deal with a travelers check, pay in cash only so it's easier for them. There was no reason they couldn't have arranged for a taxi to be at the marina when we returned. They knew when we'd be back. They did offer to let us take one of the fish. They would tell us a restaurant that would cook it for us, at this point I just needed to get away from them and back on the ship.

We walked down the road - in swim wear, carrying our snorkel gear and towels. When we got to the highway a taxi came by, honked at us, DH waived and he pulled over. We didn't have to wait but we had to negotiate the cost. He asked what we paid to come out and took that to get us back.

Back at the port area we stopped in one shop. DS wanted to look around. We weren't there long and he said he wasn't feeling well and wanted to get back on the ship. Back on the ship he got into the shower while DH went up to get chicken strips and pizza. Once DS was cleaned up and fed he felt better. We relaxed in our room until it was time to get ready for dinner. DS went to main dining while we went to Remy.

Remy is beautiful! Upon arriving we were given a tour, he stopped to show us Ego's wine at $13,000 a bottle.

The crystal Remy atop the chandelier as you enter the dining room, the wine room where "large groups" dine. Remy is found in the upholstery and the backs of the chairs.
Remy_0019.jpg

We were alone in the dining room for about 30 minutes which we really enjoyed. The dining room is small and intimate. The tables a far enough apart that you do not overhear other conversations. Very nicely done.
Remy_0021.jpg

We each ordered a different tasting menu, I had French, DH has American. We were started off with tomato soup - the best I've ever had.
Remy_0022.jpg

Yes, the little cube was tomato soup. They make the soup, freeze it into cubes, when they are ready to serve it they bread it and deep fry it. So good! Next we were given an amuse bouche of Ratatouille with olive oil ice cream. It was very good.
Remy_0023.jpg

All of the food was very good. Things we would not normally order. It was fun to try some different things. I didn't do the wine paring, I felt that another $99 was just too much. I did have one glass of wine, DH ordered a cocktail. I'm not going to post pictures of all the food, there are very detail reports on Remy that have that. My favorite dish (other than the soup) was the side dish served with my Waygu beef. It was a poached quail egg surrounded by potato foam - it was so good! DH's favorite was his pork tenderloin dish.

After we had dessert we were presented with a tray of candies made in the kitchen.
Remy_0033.jpg

We each had one but couldn't eat anymore. They packed the rest up for us to take with us. I was presented with a beautiful red rose. Then they brought a beautifully decorated plate in honor of our anniversary.
Remy_0034.jpg

Final thoughts on Remy - it was a wonderful meal, a great way to celebrate our 25th. Would we do it again - probably not. We are Palo people and will be perfectly happy dining at Palo. We are glad we tried Remy and have no regrets. Everyone was very polite and gracious, they do not make you feel uncomfortable. The price is high - our bill was over $200.

I was tempted to ask for about 8 more soups. Wonder what they would have done...

Thanks for the review on Nativeway, I was deciding between them and Captain Marvins. Sounds like you had a positive experience :)

Enjoying reading your TR, how lucky that you were able to do a B2B on the Fantasy! I also like your pics, the ones of the empty terminal are making me really wish I were there!

I loved seeing your pictures and reading about your trip. We were actually on the 7/14 Eastern and I think we overheard you talking about the back to back in Cabanas. My kids are still talking about how lucky you were to do that. I cannot wait to show them your post. We did book a Western for 2013 so your trip reports are useful.

ps Hope you had a wonderful 25th there are not to many of us that have been married that long.;)

Seriously? They gave you one cube of soup?

We love Native Way, best excursion yet! I wouldn't even consider booking with someone else.

We feel very blessed to have been able to do the B2B. The only reason we were able to afford it was that we booked them both while onboard other cruises. Cheapest way to cruise - book a dummy date if you even think you might want to cruise again.

:rotfl2:

Seriously....it looks like you'd be leaving Remy mighty hungry. :lmao:
We were full, couldn't eat another bite when we left Remy. It was the only night DH didn't go for pizza before bed.

Thanks, we did have a wonderful 25th!

Yes, just one cube. When we first ate it I wanted more, but by the time we were done with the meal I'm glad it's all we had. We weren't able to finish all the sweets we received at the end as it was.

Our last day at sea

DH booked a spa treatment for me. It's a Spa Taster - 8 different things for $139. It included a facial, hand massage, scalp and shoulder massage, foot massage, hair conditioning treatment and other things I don't remember right now. After my treatment I was going to spend some time in the Rainforest using the day pass my sister got for us. DH was going to meet me there. The spa treatment was very nice, I did purchase a couple of products. Last summer I had a facial and purchased the moisturizer and I'm still using it. It's expensive but you don't need much and it's lasted over a year.

I changed in the spa's changing room and went into the Rainforest. I was in the hot tub just a few minutes before DH came in. I asked what they had been doing all morning and he said they worked on a project and I'll find out about it in 5 days. We'd be home by then so I was a bit confused. I'll jump ahead on this - the day after we got home DH came to me with is iPad and said look at the pictures I took. One of DS getting breakfast at Cabanas, one of the 2 of them with Mademoiselle Minnie and another of DS under the AquaDuck sign. I said they were nice pictures and DH said look closer. Then I saw the shirts they were wearing. I work for an insurance company and when we volunteer for different events we get tshirts. We have lots of these tshirts. Last summer when we were at WDW and our cruise, everyday either DS or DH had one of those tshirts on. So I banned them from this trip. I'm on vacation, I don't need to be looking at my company's logo! Well, DH packed them in his gym bag. While I was at the spa they ran around this ship taking pictures. They were quite pleased with themselves.

We stayed in the Rainforest until about noon, went back to the room to shower and then got some lunch. We had our final mixology class in the afternoon. This was even more fun than the 1st. There weren't as many people, about 18 and everyone was super friendly and really into the drinks. We had great fun. Class ended a little after 5 so we had to quickly get ready for dinner and head to Enchanted Garden.

We were the 1st to arrive at our table. DS hadn't been seen all afternoon but he's not one to miss a meal. Our tablemates weren't usually late though. Finally we decided to order. DH passed on soup & salad, he ordered one each of the entrees :rotfl2:. Shortly after we ordered DS showed up. Since we had so much food already ordered he didn't feel the need to add to the craziness.

After we ordered dessert our server brought us a special surprise. Since we were at Remy for our anniversary she wanted to be part of our celebration. She made a heart shaped card for each of us and brought us the celebration dessert. Very thoughtful of her.

After dinner DS went back to Vibe, DH & I went to the room to pack. I didn't want to be rushed the last night. I'm really glad we did this, after 2 weeks we had a lot of "stuff" accumulated and it took some time to get it packed.

Our final day at Castaway Cay is next...

Such a bittersweet day - Castaway Cay  - last day :sad1:

We were ready to go as soon as the ship was cleared. We were in the stairway waiting to leave when I realized I forgot the beer :scared1:. So I went back up to our room to get that while DH & DS went ahead to secure our beach location.

Here is the island from our balcony:

As soon as I found the guys we got our snorkel gear on and hit the water. This time DS was with us and we had a great time.

My little friends followed me again, DS thought it was funny how they did that.

DS enjoyed finding Mickey:

this may be our Christmas card this year!

We saw a huge school of fish. It was fascinating to see them swim under us, around us and next to us.

The entire morning was spent snorkeling. Time seems to stand still while we are snorkeling and we were surprised that it was lunch time when we got out of the water. We went to Cookies Too for lunch. The lunch on the island doesn't wow us but it has gotten better.

After lunch DS went to the teen area. DH & I just relaxed in our loungers. Here's the view from my lounger:

Around 3 I went over to the teen area to tell DS we were heading back to the ship. The teen area looks like fun, they have ping pong, fooze ball, it was close to the sand soccer field and volleyball area.

Back on the ship we showered and got ready for dinner. Packed a few more items, put luggage tags on and tried to relax. Final dinner was in Royal Garden. After dinner DH & I went to the final show, DS went to Vibe. We did ask him to be back by 11 since we had to get up early and had a long day in the car.

After the show we went up to deck 11 for one last pizza run.

Early bed for all us. Our breakfast was scheduled for 6:45. We decided to skip the main dining breakfast and went to Cabanas. This is was great! We left our carry on's in the room, had a nice breakfast (they do have hot items like scrambled eggs and bacon) and then went down for our stuff. The last morning in Cabanas is staffed by Palo staff so we were able to say goodbye to Gabi and Dragan. Back at our room Nigel was in the hall, we said goodbye to him and grabbed our stuff.

The ship had not been released yet so we had to wait a bit in the lobby.

Only about 15 min and then we were walking off the ship and heading home. Customs was a breeze with a porter. The Park n Cruise van showed up quickly, about a 5 min wait. We had to pick up some people at the Carnival terminal. By 8 am we were back at our car. We loaded up and headed for home! We got as far as Paducah, KY before we stopped for the night. It was 10 pm when we arrived and we were ready to get out of the car. Going this far makes the next day a little easier, although it seems to take FOR EVER to get through Illinois.
