We had lunch at Ariels on Monday afternoon. It was my dd's dream come true. She has wanted to go there the last couple trips, but we have went to other character meals instead. Ariel is her very favorite princess.

After we checked in, we were told that in a few moments our name would be called. At that point we were to go down the stairs to meet Ariel. We were told she was leaving soon, and we would just have a few minutes with her. :guilty: We got to the bottom of the steps and waited for the family before us to finish up. Our turn! Dd and ds both take their books and approach her for an autograph. She quickly signs and helps them turn around for a picture. Here is where things went down hill for us.

I asked if the picture being take could be put on our photopass. I was told no. They would bring us the photo during our meal. We take a couple quick pics of both kids. We then ask little brother to move so we can snap one of just dd and Ariel. We are told that "there is NO time for individual pictures". And asked to move on. The cm was VERY rude about it.

As we were led to our table the cm asked how our day was. I told him it was better before she was rude to us. He appologized and show us our table. A few minutes later we were declared "family of the day". We are asked to lead the reading of a scroll and had our photo taken with Snow White. I can't help but think we were offered that because they were rude to us.

Our meal was ok. I had the cobb salad. It was HUGE, and good. The onion soup was ok, but could have used more cheese/toast. Dh had the potpie. The serving was large, but he said it had a strong flavor that didnt appeal to him. Im guessing an herb of some sort. Ds had spag and green beans. Dd had fish, it came with mashed potatoes and beans. They both ate most of their food. I think that theirs should have been served on smaller plates. It looked like a very small serving on that HUGE plate. For dessert I had the apples and ice cream. The apples were barely cooked and not really what I was expecting. Dh had the chocolate cake, he said it was very rich. The kids both had apples with caramel sauce.

About 1/2 way through our meal a guy came to the table with the picture they had taken of the kids. It wasnt very good, as ds's eyes were 1/2 closed. They offered to sell us the picture for $29. WTH? :scared1: We paid $86 for the 4 of us for lunch. A lunch that was supposed to include Ariel. We had about 1 minute of time with her at the enterance. Then they tried to sell us a picture for $29? Of course he went on and on about the beautiful fold it was in, and that it came with a couple smaller copies of the picture. The whole thing insulted me and smelled of pure greed on their part. I know things are expensive in the parks. . But, come on , it was character meal without the main character at the meal! :confused3 Then you want me to pay for a picture that you arent willing to put on photopass, which is what photopass should be for?

I questioned the server about the set up. She said it had changed recently. I could tell by the carefull way she worded it that I was not the first person that was unhappy with it.

I will be mailing them a letter to complain.

So did the princesses not come around to the tables? That's how they've always done it before. You're seated, you order and eat, and the princesses come out one by one and make their way around the room to every table. Also, when we've gone before, they didn't have any kind of photog there, and you did not see Ariel or any of the other princesses until you were seated and they came out.

I'm really glad I cancelled my reservation!

That was insightful. We did the Princess Lunch summer 2005 and they had stopped having Ariel there - we saw 5 other rotating princesses as they stopped by our table. Are they still doing that? What time did you arrive that coincided with Ariel leaving? I will prepare myself with a no thank you for their picture offering - wow $29??? We're going Friday so would love to know more about the new set-up.

Ariel never did leave. She was still out their, greeting the incoming guests when we left. Yes, we did have other princesses (Belle, Snow White, Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother) come around to the table. But, we really went for Ariel. It was supposed to be a meal hosted by her. I really expect more then a quick meet at the door.

WOW, we've eatten there three times and Ariel always came around to our table. I'm really sorry your experience was so bad. That policy stinks!

that is awfull, I just made ressie's for June to eat dinner there, we too are going mainly to see Ariel, it is alot money to, I am mainly doing it so we don't have to wait hours in line at the PFF, maybe we will skip it and meet Ariel in her clamshell in TL she is still there I hope:confused3 Oh how I wish they were still hanging around the castle:sad2:

Linda, thanks for that report. Sorry it was a lowlight of your trip. :( I am so bummed that the princesses are so hard to meet now without MAJOR effort either at PFF or by shelling out big bucks at Ariel's.

Am I understanding you correctly that they didn't let you snap your own picture with Ariel? Because I would definitely have a bee in my bonnet if I paid about $90 for a character dinner, wasn't allowed to take a picture of my own with Ariel, and got the hard sell on a poor quality photo for $30 more.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience and am glad you are letting them know by sending in a complaint. I dislike the new setup of Ariel not walking around with the other princesses. Hopefully more people will let management know that it takes away from the experience and maybe it'll go back to the way it was. As with the pictures, besides greed I don't understand why it can't be photopassed. I understand with attraction pictures, but not with this. Our next trip is only for 3 days so we'll be skipping Ariel's anyway.

They did let us snap our own picture. But, they would not allow us the few extra seconds we needed to get a picture of just our dd with Ariel. My way of thinking is, we paid for 4 people, we should have been able to take 4 pictures!

We have done character meals before. We've never been limited to just meeting the "star" (Minnie, Pooh and Goofy) at the enterance to the meal they are hosting. We've always had tons of interaction. This was all done very quickly. No time for chit chat. In the future we'll stick with Minnies.

This meal sounds like they are modeling it more and more like the one at Epcot. At that one there is always one princess who doesn't circulate (usually either Belle or Ariel). Then they also try to hock you the picture and that gets on my nerves big time. I liked Ariels back when it was Ariel, in mermaid form, being wheeled around while the kids played the little instruments. She also greeted in the lobby and was a continuous presence at lunch and dinner. The last time we did this one, I had to laugh at the way these manager type cm's with their little earphones and walkie talkies would talk in hushed voices to each other to keep the princesses flowing at warp speed. They looked Secret Service agents or something. I am really debating whether I want to keep my reservation for this one or not, dd wants to see the princesses but I think we will just end up missing it the way it used to be. It just seems to get more uptight with each review I read. Too bad, it used to be our favorite.

That stinks! I'm glad you're going to let them know what you think. I agree, I was really expecting all of the park photographer photos to be part of Photopass. I also expected the ride photos to be as well, but thought maybe it would take some time. :confused3

I'm also glad we got to meet several princesses on our trip last fall. With two young boys, we likely will not meet them again because they won't be interested in the Princess Fantasy Faire or the princess meal at Ariels. It's really a shame they're so inaccessible now.

It sounds like they've changed the arrangements since last year when we were there. A change for the worst, I'm afraid! I'm glad we did it last year and weren't planning on it this summer.

We'll stick to seeing Ariel in King Triton's Garden!

That's not how they did it when we went in Jan. We were seated and then during the meal Ariel, Belle,Snow White, & Aurora came to all the tables. The only problem we had was that Ariel skipped our table because Snow White was there and then we had trouble getting her back.We had to get one of the footmen to get her & she did not want to come back around. When she did come back she was a bit snippy. The other princesses were great & we took our own pictures. There was no Photographer there.

Sounds like the set-up has changed since the couple of times we went. Thanks for posting your experience, we won't be eating there again.

I too was at Ariel's Grotto for lunch on Monday. I remember your family (all dressed the same, right?). I saw you come in the door rather rushed and ask the attendant when it would be your turn. Your husband sat down next to me on the bench. I know I'm new to posting but I've been reading the boards for months in anticipation of our trip and found postings to be rather helpful. I wanted to post my experience at lunch as well as yours, so that everyone is able to see a different perspective.

Our experience was quite different than yours. We checked in at our reservatoin time of 11:30 and were told that our name would be called shortly (they call each name a few minutes apart so that as you go down the stairs and meet Ariel you have a few minutes of her to yourself, w/o a line of people behind you). When our name was called we went down the stairs and had our 'turn' with Ariel. We had about 3 minutes time. I too asked if the photo could be put on our photo pass. They explained that it wasn't possible but we were free to take pictures ourselves. They did let us take about 3-4 photos ourselves. I felt that Ariel took her time with each guest. My only complaint of the whole experience was that it was slightly dark inside and my pictures turned out dark. Next time I'll request to sit outside.

As soon as we were seated we were served warm rolls with butter and our drink orders were taken. When our drinks arrived the waitress explained the special of the day (roasted chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes). My husband had the cheeseburger w/ mashed potatoes (he said it was good), and chicken noodle soup to start. He had the chocolate cake for dessert and ate it all. I had the onion soup to start and fish and chips for my meal with the apples and ice-cream for dessert. I liked everything except my dessert, I agree with the OP that the apples were undercooked. My DD had the spaghetti and the chocolate cake.

My daughter (age 4) had a great time, each princess signed her book, chatted with her and took a few pictures. I never felt rushed. The characters for the day were: Ariel (at the entrance only), Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, and the Fairy Godmother. I had hoped that Sleeping Beauty would be there, but understand that they need to rotate. I was most impressed with Cinderella and Belle. They were very generous with their time and took the time to pick up babies, and snuggle with them, and seemed to chat a little longer.

I too thought the picture package offer was very pricey and poor quality. They offered a 5x7 and 4 4x6 color photos with the largest being in a cardboard folded frame for a price of 29.99 plus tax.

My husband paid the bill, but If I remember correctly our total was around 68.00 dollars (two adults and one child). I thought the food was good and the interaction was great, with a short 5 minute wait to be seated. In our experience the normal lunch time line (around noon) at disneyland is about 15-20 minutes and the line to see the princesses at the PFF was near an hour. I felt that our DD was able to have time with 5 princesses, have a sit down full service meal, with a minimal wait was more than worth it. (not to mention that the day before we ate curb-side while waiting for the parade to start. We each had a hotdog (my husband had two) and drinks and we spent 33.00)

Anyway, sorry for the long post.

This is great information and I'm sure the experience will vary for everyone but both posts have enough in common that I will know what to expect when we go.

Since we're traveling with another family we decided to just make reservations for the girls. The guys can eat somewhere else and having a princess lunch didn't appeal to them.

My dd with my granddaughter and our friends will each want time for photos for their kids and won't want them mingled so we'll know to ask for time for each of us.

I've also learned to ask for a table outside, which shouldn't be a problem since we have the earliest reservation time.

I will let my granddaughter know that her time with Ariel is just when she comes in so she needs to enjoy it while she can. I'm making a special autograph book where each page has room to post a photo later and on the opposite page is a sticker or two of the character and they can sign by their sticker. We'll make sure to get Ariel to sign when we see her and can get the other princesses later.

I'm sure the food will be as good as theme park food can get. We're paying for princess time and not gourmet cuisine but the salad sounded good and I'll try the cake instead of apples.

We probably won't buy the photo package unless it is amazingly better than our own photos but we'll be prepared for the pitch when they bring it around.

Thanks for the great feedback and information. For those of us going soon it sure helps to know what will happen so we can manage the expectations of our kids and grandkids! :thumbsup2

My DD had the spaghetti and the chocolate cake.

I'm curious...how was your daughter able to order the chocolate cake? When we were there 3 weeks ago the only dessert options for kids were apples with caramel sauce or yogurt. :confused3

I do have to say I'm disappointed in the menu change. They at least used to offer ice cream for the kids dessert and there was a smores dessert for adults that used to be on there too. How can I eat chocolate cake for dessert while my kid only gets apples or yogurt??? What are they thinking?

Susan-
When the waitress asked my DD what she wanted for dessert, she said cake. I explained to her that cake was only offered for the adults, while I was explaining this, the waitress offered her cake since it was her birthday (we'd gotton a birthday button for her earlier in the day at DL). I thought it was very kind of the waitress.
