I have a friend who just bought a timeshare. He swears that it allows him to use SSR:confused3

Is he right? I was under the assumpion that only DVC allow you to use one of the disney resorts

Just other DVC's can trade directly into other DVC's. Now your friend may have a timeshare that trades thru II and can request a trade into DVC.

You can try and trade in through II, but it isn't always the easiest thing. And there are blocks.

While other timeshares trade through the same exchange company as DVC, it is not an easy thing to do. DVC trades are few and far between, and 2 bedroom units will be difficult if not impossible to get. There will be little choice of WHEN you travel either.

We own a Starwood ski week out in the Vail, CO area. When we purchased they already had deposited 2008 week into II(week 15). That is a really weak trading week.

It's a 2 bedroom unit, and I was able to pull some DVC's with it. I have seen mostly studios and 1bedrooms usually in August or September or summer for all the DVC's(except AKV), but mostly you see SSR & OKW.

Saw a 10/3-10/10 BCV studio last week. I was surprised it hung around for about 2 days.

so it looks like it is POSSIBLE, but very difficult

I just found it odd he said only SSR- and I doubt he know how difficult it is going to be (although they are expecting their first child in June, so a studio will suit them fine for a while)

Actually it can be easier than people think if you can go off peak season and do with a 1 BR or smaller.

Note, this is not the first time we have heard of someone buying another timeshare and being told as part of the sales pitch that he can trade easily into DVC. He might have been told SSR because the salesman was shrewd enough to say that one because it is the largest DVC resort and the one he has the highest chance of being able to trade into through II.

I have personally traded in for the last 5 years, using 905 points including Easter week this year. It is very doable and gets easier the more resorts they build and the more owners who wish to trade out of WDW. As the ownership grows with more casual WDW fans who do not want to stay on-site each year, but want to travel to other areas the trading pool for Interval International is greatly increased.
