My MIL is getting the Tag reader and some books for my son for Christmas. Does she need to do anything to it so that it will work when he opens it? I have read that you have to download the books online or something? Does it do anything right out of the package? I just want to be prepared, so DS isn't disappointed when he opens it! Thanks!

I'm glad I saw your post and am subbing to this thread.. I got this for my niece and this is the first I've heard of these extra steps.. I hope that isn't true as that sounds like a pain in the behind!! lol!

We have the tag reader and it will not work right out of the package.

You need AAA 2 batteries.

You have to load a DVD to you computer.

Attach the pen to the computer with USB cable.

You have to go to the web site and set up an account.

Then you mark what books you have and load them onto the pen.

All total takes about 10 mins. Will leave a icon on your desk top to use if you go back to the web site.

The kids love this pen and it still amazes me on how it works.

The pen hold about 5 books then you have to delete one to add another.

Does it come with a USB cable that fits the pen?

My MIL also bought this for my kids, but it's already wrapped, so I can't look at the package. We live too far away from any stores to run out and get something after they open their presents, so I want to make sure I have everything.

Yes what you need is in the package.

Well that stinks that it only holds 5 books!! I have to say I'm disappointed in that!!!!! Ah well... I guess while my niece plays with other toys I'll upload etc:(

I agree I was disappointed when I tried to add a new book and was told I had to delete one first.

I was investigating Tag about a month ago, and stumbled on some great advice from an Amazon.com reviewer. There is another version of the Tag pen, available on the Leapfrog school site, http://www.leapfrogschoolhouse.com/, that has larger memory and can hold up to 25 books. It's $20 more, but comes with headphones, and the site lists 25% off right now.
Parents are allowed to purchase from the website. I purchased one (it's a cool orange color), and am excited to give it to my daughter for Christmas. I knew I'd be frustrated in having to remove books to add more when I reached the 5 books that the regular Tag's memory will hold. Hope this helps someone.

Honestly, we have had the TAG system since June and the quantity of what it holds hasn't been a problem (I truly thought it would be once I realized we couldn't put everything we wanted on it). My dd seems to cycle through the books - there are usually about 3 that she does every night at bedtime for a 2 or so weeks and then she changes to different ones - it only takes a few seconds to remove one book and upload a different one. I just connected hers and it holds 6 books - right now she has 5 books and her National Geographic cards on it.

I bought this for my son as well for Xmas. I just wrapped it last night, but I thought it said the Ozzy and Mack book (that comes with it) are preloaded, but any other books would need to be loaded onto it :confused3

my son just got this for his birthday last month and the ozzie and mack book was preloaded on the tag reader... my parents got him the "bundled" set from bj's that had the case and an extra book (cars!) that was not loaded on the tag reader... but it was easy to do...

hope that helps!

Perfect! As long as something is preloaded so he can play with it, I'll be all set! That's the same set DS is getting from his Grandma for Christmas! Yippee!!
