OT-- should we do a double sink in new vanity or single?

Sorry-- this is only somewhat budget related...

We are FINALLY redoing the bathroom that our girls share. (we have three- one, four and six).. anyhow-- We have a six foot vanity that we are having torn out and replaced.

I went to Home Depot and priced a few options-- there isn't much of a difference $$ wise between and double v. a single sink in terms of countertop and cabinet prices.

What would you select?

My pros for a single would be: more counterspace, more storage underneath in the cabinets (they are configured differently), LESS cleaning (one less sink to clean and I don't have a cleaning lady!)

Of course-- people seem to love the double vanity.. does this add value to a house?

If we do do a single-- I want to get a pretty cool Kohler sink-- a large one! If we do the double-- the sinks would be cheaper, but I will need to buy two faucets. I LOVE the Kohler fairfax...

Another thing to consider-- I will be replacing the light with one triple light-- it is centered in the middle. I don't want to pay to rewire that light.

thanks for your opinions-- I am torn as to what to do-- DH doesn't care.

Absolutely the double, esp with three girls sharing the space. You will not regret it.

Coming from a family with 3 kids, trust me, get the double vanity! Imagine 3 kids brushing their teeth and trying to spit into the sink. We try to stagger bedtime prep but it never fails...oh, and I would rather clean two sinks than toothpaste spit out of DD's hair. Our middle DD even has her own bathroom but she cannot resist being with her siblings.

I also think the double is better for resale.

As for the faucets, two plumbers and our decorator told us not to buy them at Home Depot. We found a discount plumbing supply store that sells directly to plumbers. This store sold them for the same price as HD but according to everyone we spoke to, the quality is far superior. You think you are getting the same product but supposedly the internal parts at HD are junk. Be careful and really research what you purchase. We did buy the vanity (Thomasville) and top (granite with sink built in) from HD and love them!

My dh and I are trying to decide the same thing. I really wanted the double at first but I kept changing my mind.
Then every night when I hear the three kids in the bathroom fighting about who can brush their teeth first, I know the decision is made. Double vanity all the way!!!

Don't buy Kohler faucets. Plumbers hate them. I had one in my kitchen that was $180 and it fell apart in 8 months! Replaced it with an American Standard that's going strong after 4 years.

BUY THE DOUBLE SINK! You'll be glad you did.

We remodeled our DD's bathroom a few years ago (we also have 3) & it's one of the best things we ever did. Yes, we lost counter space, but we gained drawer space & now they each have their own drawer.

I think it's better for resale also.

Another vote for double. I so wish I had put a double in our kids bathroom. Thats about the only thing I regret about our new house.

I vote double as well. We have the space for a double sink in our kid's bathroom, and when we get around to remodeling (and getting rid of the laminate countertop, yuck) we will definately put in a double sink. Just remember there will also be an extra plumbing expense to run the piping to the 2nd bowl.

thanks for your advice!!! This is really making me rethink this. I have a few months to decide..but I find that I really really have to plan out my decorating decisions because the times I have decided off the cuff-- I really screw up!

My DF (Dad) owns a plumb/heating business-- so I am lucky to have someone that can help with the plumbing. (I am going to ask for sinks for Xmas- how jolly!)

I'm gonna have to agree with everyone here, and say the double sink.

We built on a bathroom 2 yrs ago, and have never regretted getting a double sink counter.

My older dd and I have claimed the right sink, and younger dd and dh has claimed the left one, lol.... and dd's love being able to brush their teeth together, etc.

Plus, the way that we did ours is we made a separate area between the 2 sinks for counter space, and that's where I have a chair that dd's sit at while I fix their hair.... I LOVE it.

I'll post a pic so you can see what I'm talking about.. not sure if you'd have the room to do this, but I know as dd's get older they'll like sitting there, doing their hair/makeup/whatever.

My vote is for the double too! Especially with all those girls! We just sold our house that had a double sink - and moved to a house that does not - and I'll say that is the thing that I miss the most!!

I must be the minority. DH and I had double sinks in our old house. I never used the 2nd sink. When we bought our new house, we had the option for the double and I still stuck with the single. My boys have a single too. They are on different schedules and rarely are brushing their teeth together. I enjoy having more countertop space. Although, I will say if I had enough room for a double AND counter space I would go for it.

We have 2 boys AND double sinks and there's still nightly squawbling. I just don't get it. Then again, I was an only child. I am SO hoping they outgrow it. But I'd still get the double sinks.

I agree with everyone else, get a double vanity!

Regarding the light, my double vanity area has just one hole for the wiring as well, but the light bar is 48 inches long. The original one from the builder had eight light bulbs (really disco, very ugly). I recently replaced it with a really nice bronze fixture with four lights. It's really nice and gives plenty of light. Anyway there are lot's of options out there for light fixtures too.

I am worried about the lack of counter space.. but I definitely am going to look into doubles... I may measure the sinks I want and make cut outs to see how much room would be left.

(I really don't want to mess this project up, can you tell?)

I am in the minority here, but we just redid ours last summer ( I have 3 girls 13, 10 &5 who share that bath) and we went with the 1 sink and the large counter area. They seem to do fine when they are all in there to brush, and we all love all the room on the counter, and underneath in the vanity. We bought the vanity, the countertop and all the tiles from Home Depot, but we were also told by the contractor not to buy the faucets there. They say all of the name brands make cheaper versions just for stores like HD and Lowes. Good Luck deciding. I'm not sorry we don't have that extra sink. I love the new BR just as it is.

We have a double sink and i HATE it.... I have no counter space.

What good is resale when it's clearly not functional?

I'm this close to ripping it out and going to a single with counter on the side...

One of the best baths i had was a long counter with single bowl on one side. There were huge drawers under the counter side.

Now if your vanity is 72 inches it seems you have more room than i do so may still have some counter after two bowls.
