OT - Question about ebay buyer

A buyer bid and won an auction from me 2 days ago - I only accept paypal because over the years other methods have caused me too much headache. Today the buyer emailed me that they don't have a paypal account and they will send me a check - also, they are a new member with 0 feedback. I don't want to do a check and my ad states very specifically that I only accept paypal - plus the 0 feedback......I can't afford to deal with a bounced check.

Any advice?

Tell them very nicely that they can set up a PayPal account at no cost. Once that is set up they can pay you. Either that you indicate you will accept the check but will wait ten business days after depositing it until you send the item. If you do not hear from them, or they are unwilling to use PayPal, file NPB with eBay; once you get your fees back you can then safely give them a neutral or negative. Be sure to do EVERYTHING through eBay's mail system so that eBay can see all the correspondence.

I would tell them to set up a paypal account or send you a money order/bank check. You should not have to worry about their personal check bouncing. Good Luck.

This happened to me last month and the person offered to pay my e-bay fees since they felt that they messed up my auction. I offered to accept a money order if they really wanted the item and they were very happy to send it. In fact they included some cash in the envelope for my being so understanding. They too only had about 11 transactions. I guess it depends on how much you want to complete the sale. I still state only Paypal because it is a pain to wait for received payment by mail, but the one time exception worked out ok.

You can set up your auctions to block anyone who does not have a Paypal Account and then they are unable to bid!!

Checks can bounce after 10 days (I had one sent to me that bounced after 3 weeks, grrrr), so I wouldn't do it, period. If you are willing to give a little, offer to accept a postal (ONLY a postal) money order since you can cash it before shipping out the item. Or push back on the paypal only - it's not at all an unreasonable term to put in an auction!

I had someone bid on a Thomas the Tank Engine video tape. They won the bid for only $2.00, yet didn't pay, didn't respond to emails, so I can feel your pain on this. This persons rating was a 2 I think with some negative feedback for the same reason. As buyers we don't have to buy from people we don't want to for whatever reason, but as sellers we have to accept the bids from people with negative feedback. I think something needs to change. People can go around and bid on things and then never pay all they want.
