OT- Oil and Disney

I can think of one way WDW could be affected. This us hard to wrap my brain around, but most of the people DH works with plan trips to WDW that involve a couple of days there, plus Sea World, and the gulf coast beaches. I know! Crazy idea. But if they see WDW as only a part of their vacation, they might not take that trip to FL and then WDW would feel the pinch as well.

I live in Florida about 1/2 hour away from some of the most beautiful Gulf beaches. We have no oil issues here, zero, zip, nada. The Gulf of Mexico is pretty darn big, and so is the state of Florida. The only portion of Florida affected so far is the distal Panhandle. The beaches of Florida's Gulf coast along the peninsula are fine, beautiful, in fact. (Clearwater, St Pete, Anna Maria Island, Siesta, Lido etc...on south).

Check with your sister as to where she is getting her information. Now is a great time to visit the beaches of Manatee & Sarasota counties. They are pristine and gorgeous. :cool2: And only about 2-21/2 hours away from WDW. My hubby is away on business starting today and the boys and I will be hanging on the beach awaiting his return. :beach:

Sorry, but your sister is an idiot. unless she's seen oil all over the coastline, she's wrong.

As has been posted, the oil has only affected a small area in the panhandle. The rest of the state is fine.

disney, other than some folks scared at misinformation and jamming the parks instead of the beach, won't be affected as the parks are in the middle of the state.

As a tourist, you won't be owning a home so you aren't directly affected by a state's financial situation, like lower taxes and services for homeowners.

so come down, enjoy, and tell your sister never to get into marketing or PR work.

Wow. Thank you for your information :rolleyes1

We're from Ohio so we get our information from the news. Never trust the news, right? I should know that by now! I'm glad that it's all looking ok!! :thumbsup2

In Louisiana, yes. It is getting into the bays, wetlands, and even Lake Pontchartrain. :sad1:

I think in the other Gulf states, it's staying mainly on some beaches. Not all the beaches are affected, it depends on the currents and geography. WDW does not have oil; it is inland and it's also not even along the stretch of Florida that is affected at this time.

This page has the trajectory maps for the oil at the bottom of the page.

OMG YIKES. Thanks for sharing the link. That's sad that it's starting to get into the waterways (and really scary)

Hi all. My sister said that we should be aware that the Oil Spill is affecting all of Florida, including Disney. I asked her if she thought that we shold cancel our trip (:scared1:) and she said no, but to just know that things aren't going well down there.

Is the oil spill affecting Disney (or could it affect Disney in the fall)? She's got me paronoid... I hate that. :confused3

That's so vague and cryptic. Did you aske her what she meant by that?;)

I am from Mississippi and our coast too is being effected somewhat. That being said, it wouldn't deter me from going to the coast. The beaches are beautiful, the restaurants are open, shops are open....there's PLENTY to do at the beach if you don't want to go in the Gulf.

As for Disney, it's no where near either coast (or water) to be effected directly. I think that one thing that people should not do is panic.

We saw that during Katrina and it killed the economy in New Orleans and on our coast. Both have started to recover and come back and panic will only cause the fragile economies in these areas to nose dive again. The difference this time is that while some areas may be more effected than others, on the beach, there's electricity, water, power, food, etc.....something we were sorely lacking after Katrina. But you asked about Florida, so I won't continue to go on about LA and MS.

I wouldn't worry one iota about Disney. We're going in Sept and it never entered my mind NOT to go because of the oil spill or anything else. Personally, I'm glad we're going to contribute to the economy in FLA while munching Mickey bars. They need all the revenue they can. ;)

When panic ensues, misinformation can tend to run rampant. I don't think anyone wants that. :)

There is so much misinformation out there. But when the oil spill first happened, I knew of people who canceled their trip to New Orleans due to the spill. Of course I pointed out to them how far inland New Orleans was and they had no clue. But now we are hearing of oil getting into Lake Ponchatrain, but that still wouldn't make me cancel my trip.

My family and I (this includes, dad, stepmom, sisters and their families too) spend a week in Gulf Shores, Al staying at our time share condos every year. We just got back from there and we are so glad we went anyway.

No we could not swim in the Gulf, but we did walk the beach even though Alex was making the tide come in further than normal so oil was up higher on the beach.

There are other things to do there and we had a good time. We even got to see Freddy and the Fishsticks at Lulu's. For those of you who don't know, Freddy and the Fishsticks is the other name Jimmy Buffett uses. The owner of Lulu's is his sister and there was supposed to be a benefit concert the next night but was postponed until later due to Alex. So, Jimmy decided to show up to his sister's restaurant and perform. We just so happened to be there having dinner. It was such a nice surprise.

Anyway, we need to go to the Gulf area and support the businesses there, even the BP gas stations. So many of the independent owners that have the BP logo are hurting due to so many people boycotting their stations. Many want to change over to another company but that takes months. I know this because my brother in law works for Motiva (Shell and Texaco) and his job is to convert stations. Also if BP goes bankrupt, then we will be paying 100% of the clean up, not BP

Please don't stay away from Florida! I'm on Lido Key (Sarasota area) and NOTHING should keep you away from here except for the HEAT :cool1:

I think the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon had 3 inch tarballs yesterday.
The sharks in shark reef are okay though.

OK, I had to do a doubletake. :scratchin
I haven't been to the water parks so I wasn't sure what to make of it at first. I thought something was fishy there! DUH...:rotfl:

Oh my, I just laughed my a** off! Maybe that will keep people out of TL. We are there in August and would appreciate fewer lines on waterslides and less people in the wave pool!!!!!

You are aware that Disney isn't on the coast, right? I live in Clearwater and everything is just fine this way. People need to realize that there is ALOT of coastline in Florida!

Sorry, but your sister is an idiot.
Not the word I would use to describe her.

But I think people who deliberately spread false rumors are in the same category as someone who would yell fire in a theatre.

I agree, considering the terrible economic situation in coastal towns, it's really irresponsible for the OP's sister (or anyone) to spread negative infoarmation about the area when she really has no idea.
