OT- Oil and Disney

i have heard that it has affected the its a small world ride. and in the potc battle scene, you get splashed with oil.

Now THAT is funny!!! :rotfl2:

I, too, looked at this thread out of curiosity and nosiness... I havent read ALL the posts, but i skimmed many of them... Maybe the OP means that people are avoiding the coast and beaches and are being "forced" inland to places such at Orlando - aka WDW, USO, Seaworld and such... ??

My sister actually lives IN Florida, too, In the FLorida Keys to be be exact. She is a Dive Master and DBIL works for NOAA out of Key West. She did say that things are not good there. From the struggling economy, to now the press making everyone in the beac communities horrified about the oil... But on the flip side it may be good for the inland atractions and destinations?? Unfortunatly, once it hits the gulf stream many, many more people will be affected. The Gulf Stream’s loop current will push the oil spill around the Florida Keys and along the US East Coast at 100 miles per day. The oil will be carried as far north as Cape Hatteras, North Carolina by mid summer, according to a computer simulation model released last week. :surfweb: Its verry verrrry sad.

I watch the national news channels each day and I have never heard any of them state that Florida is covered in oil. It's generally about Lousiana in fact and even it's not covered in oil (even if there is way too much in many places :( ). I don't think that the media is blowing this out of proportion at least not where Florida is concerned so I don't know where those ideas came from.

But you see, that's a future projection* - NOT Orlando already being affected in a bad way!

*apologies for the redundancy

Exactly. People just aren't doing actual RESEARCH of their own, just reacting to a bunch of hearsay.

It's pretty easy to go to a town's local newspaper website and see firsthand stories and pictures that apply to the local area.

But also, people plan their vacations months in advance. And as the computer models show, it MIGHT be bad down the road when they plan to go. It's a lot of money to shell out for a vacation if what you really want is the beach, and then you can't use the beach. It's not like you can just change your plane tickets anymore, you are pretty much stuck.

I was just plain nosey and decided to open this once I saw the note to ask the mods to close it.;)

I can see Floridians being upset that false stories are being spread. It will just make matters worse. People will believe anything without doing any research.

Most news stories seem to mention Louisiana. Not sure where all of this "Florida covered in oil" nonsense is coming from. Granted, this oil leak is a disaster and has impacted many lives. I feel for those who are being effected by it. But to over-state the damage to areas that haven't been effected will just make things worse for the economy in the area.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I would be reluctant to plan a vacation that is in the projected path.

Hi all. My sister said that we should be aware that the Oil Spill is affecting all of Florida, including Disney. I asked her if she thought that we shold cancel our trip (:scared1:) and she said no, but to just know that things aren't going well down there.

Is the oil spill affecting Disney (or could it affect Disney in the fall)? She's got me paronoid... I hate that. :confused3

Hmm where in this post is the OP spreading a rumor or giving false information?? They are even admitting to being parnoid so they came here to the disney board for reassurance. I really can't believe some of the rude comments, really makes me hesitant to post any questions in the future.

Not to call out your sister, but how other than maybe financially? WDW is not near the coast/beach.

Actually, attendance has been up since people that were planning on going to the coast are now coming here to Orlando.

And the oil in the gulf is not affecting us in any way, other than hearing about it every 2 minutes on the news.

Typhoon Lagoon as well Blizzard Beach are self contained water parks. How could someone think the Gulf of Mexico could even affect either one? :confused3

The only effects I can think of are:

1) Financially because the entire state is broke
2) Larger crowds (although this would help the financial problem) from all the people who would be at the beach.

Unless they mean the cruise line? Disney does normally have western caribbean cruises right? are those still running?

Where on earth have you heard this?

Understood - but being pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the state, about as far from the Gulf of Mexico as it is from the Atlantic Ocean, Orlando pretty much CAN'T be in any projected path.

I'm aware of that. I am commenting on the fact that, overall, tourism in Florida is down. I, for one, would not book a future vacation that was in the projected path of the oil spill for fear that it would reach there before or during the time that my vacation is scheduled and I would be out the money.

For what it's worth I think a lot of the name calling and comments about the OP's sister have been unnecessary. She was misinformed, not malicious or attempting to malign anything or anyone.

And I, without looking at a map of Florida, wouldn't hesitate TO book a vacation at Walt Disney World or in Central Florida - because I know, with or without looking at any computer or other projections, that Orlando CANNOT POSSIBLY be in the path of this oil spill.

Plain, simple common sense.

I don't recall calling the OP's sister names so I won't apologize for that; however, since the OP has been to Central Florida several times in the past, it's reasonable to expect that she, too, would be aware its distance from ANY shoreline would mean it can't possibly be affected in any negative way by BP's screw-up.

Well, it will affect our next trip. We were planning to drive to Orlando from Dallas and stop in the Pensacola area for a couple of nights on the way there. Now, with the projection maps already showing oil near Pensacola, I doubt that it will be in our plans. We'll just fly in as usual. Even if oil isn't washing up on the coast yet, I would be concerned about the dispersing chemicals.

So our vacay will be a flight with no beach time included. To each their own.

I think many of the comments have come out of frustration about the misinformation that is out there and the fact that it is pretty easy to see that Orlando could not be affected by the oil.

Now, if the op said her sister was concerned about the possibility of a larger number of guests at WDW because of the possibility of oil on the coast, that would have been easier to understand.
