OT- Oil and Disney

popcorn:: Love reading this thread. Thanks for the entertainment. My satellite is out right now.

FYI. We are going to Florida and DW in August and nothing will stop us. Whether it's the weather (Been there during Tropical Storm Fay), the heat and humidity, crowds (especially with Harry Potter at Universal) or even tarballs along the northwest coast of Florida, we are going. We'll have fun!! :yay: It's Disney after all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What could be more fun than that?

I am mostly a lurker on these boards. Most of the time when reading through threads- I see someone post something and get attacked for it.

I understand that everyone has the RIGHT to their opinion and can say what they want, but come on. I think some people on here like being bullies behind a computer screen and that is sad.

I thought this was supposed to be friendly boards where people could come and discuss things and get information- not attacked!

There are people that say things all the time and I am amazed at what just came out of their mouth. BUT, I bite my tongue and say nothing. Why? Because I have been taught MANNERS and how to be RESPECTUFUL and KIND to others.

Hmm where in this post is the OP spreading a rumor or giving false information?? They are even admitting to being parnoid so they came here to the disney board for reassurance. I really can't believe some of the rude comments, really makes me hesitant to post any questions in the future.

I agree. Several are complaining about all the false information going around out there from news media and other sources, so can you be 100% sure that a Google search would come up with completely reliable information? Not like a message board with a bunch of people who live in the state in question who can give firsthand accounts. A lot of people would be thrilled to be thought of as an expert, not just po'd because someone's saying something that might be construed as bad about their homestate.

Really.... get over that Orlando is landlocked in the middle of the state and could not be affected by the oil. How about the crowds being potentially insane if the beaches wind up closed? If the worst-case scenario happens, how many locals might consider going to Disney when they would normally hang at the local beach? How many who would fly/drive/whatever down and spend a few days at Disney and other Orlando attractions, then several days at one of the beautiful beaches decide, instead, to spend all of their time at WDW?

People are freaking out over small things. Tarballs are not as horrible/unusual as people would have you believe. Panama City Beach, which I believe has had some tarballs wash up, has had a definite decline in tourism because people think the oil is horrible there...it's not. I live about 100 miles away, have been twice already this summer, and am going for a week at the end of the month. I have a friend at Destin right now, and the beach is still absolutely gorgeous. Only time will tell how this is going to affect the rest of the Gulf Coast.

OP - go and have fun. And take the "Mods please close this thread" out of the Title because it draws us rubberneckers in. A friend of mine would call this a trainwreck situation... you don't WANT to look, but you just can't HELP but to look.

Totally OT and likely inappropriate, but has anyone seen the BP Coffee Spill video on youtube?

Unfortunately, this happens on any large fast moving message board I have used- Disney, Scrapbooking, Couponing, etc. from my experience. Don't let that keep you from posting. If you don't like drama though the smaller sites are more user friendly. Refillable mug questions are even met with friendly answers on the TGM forum!

Well, isn't this perfect timing? There was JUST a commercial on TV touting Florida's 825 miles of beaches and either 1,261 or 1,061 - I listen faster than I type - miles of pristine coastline.

You know what bothers me? That the OP, instead of telling her sister, "Not likely that Walt Disney World is affected because it's not near any coast but I'll check [with the DIS or other sources]"... quoted her sister here and asked us if her sister could be right. It bothers me because the OP, as a repeat WDW visitor, can reasonably be expected to know that Orlando's not near a coast and so not affected by the oil.

Even where beaches ARE affected, there are people cleaning up as much as possible whenever tar balls appear.

Isn't that what I did?

Unless we missed a post, no.

Looking at the last 8 pages again, no where was it posted that you said that.

maybe it got deleted by mistake editing a post, or didn't post properly, who knows, but it wasn't there...

There is so many times the news is wrong, which is why I like to visit at least a half dozen major news sites and such daily. I don't watch the local TV news as they are all playing catchup to what i've already seen and read. Only if its a local issue, will I watch those.

Florida is a large state, and while at the start, there was doom and gloom by the media about Florida being covered in oil and the Gulf current was going to spread it out to areas along the East Coast (including NY and such) and then even out to England and northern europe in under 10 days... well that was weeks ago and it still hasn't happened.

Not saying it won't, but its not happened yet. over 90% of the state is fine and open for business (coast wise).

Ok everybody, I get the point.

I was wrong for not telling my sister to shut her face and stop spreading rumors (aka... telling me a vague news story she heard because she knew I had a Dis trip coming up...) about Florida and Disney being affected by the oil spill.

I was wrong for asking a stupid question on the Dis boards because any IDIOT should have known better than to do so.

There, are we all happy now?

MY GOD, people. I haven't been down there since the oil spill started, so EXCUSE ME for my stupidity.

:surfweb:Too much drama for me! :confused3

That's why I come to the Friendly World of Dis.... to escape the real world for a while. :wizard: I have enough to deal with in my own life...

That's why I asked for this thread to be closed last week! :sad2:

Respectfully, no - not the way you explained things in any of your posts, anyway. You skipped the parts about telling your sister the news reports were probably wrong and that you'd check, and instead pretty much stated what she told you as fact, i.e. presented as if you believed her, then questioned the news.

That's why I asked for this thread to be closed last week!
That's more effectively done by reporting a thread - even your own - by clicking on the red-bordered white triangle with the exclamation point in it.

Hi all. My sister said that we should be aware that the Oil Spill is affecting all of Florida, including Disney. I asked her if she thought that we shold cancel our trip (:scared1:) and she said no, but to just know that things aren't going well down there.

Is the oil spill affecting Disney (or could it affect Disney in the fall)? She's got me paronoid... I hate that. :confused3

Simple question asked in the first post....then pages of attacks when a simple "no" would have been good. I will try to remember not to ask a question on the DIS that someone else might deem stupid! Wow people!!!
